Did someone say beer???
The Hourglass says it is almost time there. Heard some whispers in truckee. Thinking about it today. 9k+ and windloaded is the given. Yesterday on the eastern aspects of judah I observed the reported windcrust layer under the new snow that began falling Friday. Dug a pit on a 30 degree slope sat and had slab failures at CT7 and CT9. Repeat Sunday and the advisory was correct about the move over towards considerable. Failures at CT4 and CT5. Did a couple of RB tests also. RB3 on a 30 degree slope (eastern aspect). Now 3 feet down the same crust failed on both RBs. RB4 on test test slope of <25 degrees pushed the second result to RB3 too. shallow base getting windloaded on a crust with cool temps. I'm gonna wait till tommorow to consider tam. Anyways, from here in the valley it looks like some shit is going down up there right now. Hopefully its not just some crappy snoweating clouds.
My distant view from Washoe Valley appeared to show great coverage in Tamarack and top of Hourglass. Looks better than anything I've seen around South Shore, including the Heave's East Bowl coverage with it's macking man made base (although it' s still not ready to open due to management bullshit). This could be the weekend for a North Shore trip if Rosey really dealing some worthy base. If not, I'm probably going to poke around Round Top on Saturday, and pretend it's Washington.![]()
Well said. Headed out today with intent, but turned into absolute fiasco. Had to run to KW for pants and helmet, and coming around Carson Pass about 1:30ish snow showers starting with zero vis. After riding KW yesterday I didn't feel the need to trek out there in said conditions, also given avy danger. Thanks for all that info up above. Turns out I would not want to be in the backcountry with the tool who was my passenger. I hope I can vent.
He doesn't drive, so my roommate got him from town to my house in Xmas Valley. I had my skis in the roof rack with it open for his skis. I was helping him move gear from one rig to my wagon when he asked if he could put his skis in the car as his skins were already on. At this point I'm already in the driver's seat and he puts his skis in the ski condom. We're turning onto 89 from Santa Claus when I look through the sun roof to make sure all is well. It appears kosher, but wait...
We're tooling pretty fast, and at the first passing lane coming up to Carson Pass I make a pass on the right lane. Now the rest of the way to KW the dude I passed was on my ass. I was a bit baked, but he tailgated me all the way to the Meadows. He told me the skis in their neon pink and black bag flew off the car right when I passed them. According to him they were right on the side of the road. No apology from new "friend". We hustle back to the spot, but the bag was a flag for some lucky-ass motorist. King Salmons with Freerides, freshly tuned professionally by me. Still no apology, at this point he jumps in my roommates car so they can go explore Waterhouse (way too early I had heard and now confirmed) while I search for my babies. I'm putting the word out. I know I was baked and could have double-checked or seen/heard the skis come off, but wanker took no responsibility whatsoever. Is this who I want watching my back in life or death situations. I think not! He was supposed to join me and friends at Pear Lake Hut middle of next month. No chance.
I'm calling him later today in order to find out if he feels any fiscal responsibility. I'm thinking half, and others have said full. What a self-absorbed jackass!
If you hear of my skis, let me know. Peace out. Oh yeah, you could easily skin from the lot.
Wow, what a horror story DD. Your "partner" sounds like so many of the local Tahoe bros around here. If the dude does not even have a car, I doubt you'll ever get the money out of him without taking him to civil court. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for your skis. You'd hope most folks with a conscious would try to return them to the owner. I would check the announcements in the Tribune as well as the Lost and Found section of this local b.c. ski board: http://www.thebackcountry.net/bb/index.php
In case another "bro" finds them and is looking for some evil cash, I'd also check in at Sierra Cycle Works and the backcountry shop in Meyers by Roadrunner (Cal's shop, I can't remember the name...), They both do some consignment stuff there. Ebay of course, too.
I did a little poking around Waterhouse with the new puppy. It's at least one monster storm away from being ready. But it's not as bad as I was afraid it might be.
Yo DD. You called me last night about this fiasco. I talked to the "friend" today and he said he is used to the ski rack opening on the driver's side. I asked if he was on the passenger's side and if he forgot to shut the rack after he got his skis off and back in the car. He really didnt have a response so Im feeling hes probably goin to deny responsibility. Ill leave that up to yall. Sorry that shit happened man.
Amtrak is your friend
Its not that I suck at spelling, its that I just don't care
nice opening of the season gong show story. sorry it was an expensive one for ya and i'll bet those skiis will turn up. i'll keep an eye out for em.
Thanks for your consideration maggots. I really dig this here website. I still haven't managed to call duder on his shit, but I have a feeling the skis will come back to me. I haven't had time to do much investigating since Monday, but I surely appreciate all of your tips. Even if they don't turn up, Santa is coming soon.... I do have a pair of Commis on order, but I wasn't planning on making them my backcountry boards. Come on cold front. My jones is insatiable.
Little Ak was sweet on Monday, light waist deep pow, not sure now though with the rain.
Hey, thanks for that idea. I really have to figure out what I'm going to say to him before I phone so that he isn't instantly on the defensive. I do have to accept some of the responsibility. I've been a bit manic and not getting enough sleep, combined with endless safety meetings. I probably would have double and triple checked it were I in my right mind. On the other hand, there is no way in hell that I would leave anyone's gear in the rack without shutting it if I were the last one tinkering with said rack.
I must pull my string out and not be concerned about rocking the boat. I just want everyone to be happy, which is an impossibility in many situations.
The driver, even when stoned, is in charge of the car and all stuff strapped to it. Leaving it to some dude to button things up showed stupidity. Now you are gonna leave it up to him to recover it? I guess we know why you were sitting on your ass while your dude was messing with the rack. You're effin lazy!

I am in fact quite lazy. I think later in the spread I went on to say that I wasn't in my right mind due to lack of sleep and endless safety meetings. Were I myself a bit more stable I would have double checked the rack more than just looking at it through the sun roof. I never claimed he was fully responsible, but there's no doubt in my mind that he is somewhat responsible. I treat people the way I want to be treated, and I wouldn't forget that my buddies boards were unsecure in his rack for a 30 minute drive if I were the last one tinkering with the rack. I guess maybe I should swith the rack opening to my side of the car. Most of my friends. however are pretty f'n solid. Unlike this cat that I will never go in the backcountry with.
