HA ! there just wasn't much snow in cham the last 3-4 years. Just as in La grave. (and you know i love la grave) and don't tell me it did snow this year because when it snowed in late feb i couldn't use it anymore.

oh nice to see you made it back alive from budapest.(or whereever you've been)
so what about going surfing with us next week ? (or climbing this week ? just come to Erlangen. Im there from this evening until tuesday morning)

istanbul. and I'm going back on 11th of sept. I'll think about the climbing offer. but I've been seriously sick the last days and still have to watch out a bit. I guess I couldn't adapt to the 20 degree temperature drop from there to here. the mountains at the other end of lake zurich where white when I came back. I couldn't believe it. when I left it was still about 35° around noon. what happened? do you know a wheathermap archive? I'ld like to have a look at that..

If you happen to live on the western edge and north of Köln, Landgraaf in NL ain't that far off. And they defo have small jumps and rails there.

    More info here
Thanks for the link. I'm living in Hamburg, so not exactly the western edge, but it isn't exactly close to anything here (except the hookers and blow on the reeperbahn).

    Zugspitze: 50cm fresh at 2600m. (25 tonight)
30 in Engelberg at 2000m. at the glacier i guess it must be close to a meter now because it snowed there all the time during the last days.

what to do, what to do

so im going to be in Switzerland for the spring studying abroad. Specifically in Geneva. What should I do as far as passes, eurorail, ect. I want to ski as much as possible, which means every wknd. Should I look at getting a cheap pass somewhere. Any recs on this one. How bout eurorail. Should I look at getting something for travel. Cham, Engelberg, will be skied, but realistically I cant afford to travel there every wknd. any help would be most appreciated, Cant wait to ski w/ some of you guys. thanks again

day passes for the skiing. too late to get any use out of a season pass.
the closest and easiest skiing for you from geneva will be either the alpe vaudiose (leysin, villars, les diablerets), portes du soleil (champery, les crosets, morgins), or verbier from the swiss side. if you go around the french side of lake geneva, it will be chamonix, flaine or again portes du soliel (les gets, morzine, avoriaz). engelberg will be about 4-5 hours by train.

you can probably get a student discount for the swiss trains. check out:

LostintheTrees lives in Geneva, you can probably mooch rides off of him.

Also, getting valais-skicard.ch might be a good bet... You can charge money on it, and then just tick days off at different resorts (the resortlist is at the webpage)... I had that in Jan and it worked out well, works in Leysin, Villars and 4-Vallees (Verb), but sadly not in G3000.

If you get a good price with a eurorail-ticket, that migth be pretty useful, provided you want to see yurp and not just the slopes (Paris, Vienna etc.).

The Swiss sell an after 7pm pass, which let's you ride for free around the country.
It costs you 100 CHF, with proof of legal residence in country.
That should get you back to Geneva.
They also sell a 1/2 price pass for 150 CHF/year, and there is a monthly deal too.
That's your transport scene worked out, more or less.
As for ski passes, not sure what to tell you.

For trains and resorts, plan to ski Alpes Vaudoises or Vallais (that's a ton of options).
Why? The train line runs from Geneva to Brig/Visp.
Find a map and see it follow the Rhone River upstream.
Then look at all the mountains on either side of that line. Drool. And pick one.
    www.cff.ch choose the english option
have fun typing in Geneva to ??? and see if the train arrives at 08h30 or not.

France is another option from Geneva, but I know nothing about it.

you need to give us your ~ dates of Spring term.

    4-in-stance,
...if u arrive March 1st, OK. you will have plenty to choose from! Rpiz & hemas reco's make sense.

...if you don't arrive until after April 10, then forget about PDS, Flaine, Verb...anything under 2500m.
At that point, ur best choices from Geneve would be:
    Zermatt (3+ hrs train),
    Cham/GrandsMontets (~1:15 bus),
Glacier3000 (? hrs via train & bus ...teleal would know that bit of info),
Paris (5 hrs TGV...and u really should go 4 at least 1 long wkend!)

I reco that u should ski Engelberg at least once. Nice hostel in nice town w/ some nice descents.

ps. bring skins if you bumming rides from me.
yeah, my bad on that one. the term is from late Jan-May. Thinking of going a wk early.

kids, feel free to bum rides off me. lausanne is about 1/3 of the way there for you. i could pick you up at lausanne or pully station and take you from there. not sure if it would be any better for you than LITTs 6:45am doorstep deadline in Geneva tho. it would still be an early haul for you.

given your term dates, you may want to think about a season pass. i'll have the alpes vaudoise pass, which at full price the breakeven days is about 19. so gauge your possible/probable days and see if it's worth your while. there's probably a student discount available which will lower the price and lower your breakeven days. the downside, obviously, is that it will limit you do a small number of resorts. it does include 4 half price vouchers for resorts in the valais tho.

still too early for anything other than glacier skiing. zermatt and saas fee are your main two options. there are a few others that may be open in austria and france.

No Problem since I'm starting in Poland and will want to go to Amsterdam and London before I go to the Slopes. My French and German language skills are limited so ....... I will have to speak Ricky's International language.
