no they won't let you go up with equipment unless there's some slope open or you can convince them you are going touring and what you are planning on is not lifethreatening.

if the park/or the mini glacier slope is open they don't care where you are acctually going , except if you ski the closed slopes.(insurance stuff)
if nothing is open to ski. they aren't allowed to let anybody up with skis if there is no "real skiing" = on piste available.

i presume that they probably aren't doing avy control either?

hmmm, the only other option i find is zermatt - one lift open on the glacier. but they really arent getting the same snow as eberg.
    hardly worth it.

The Kl Matterhorn lift should be running again from Saturday, but again, not really for skiing. But you should be able to get away with the, "I'm going touring" excuse.

Went for a skin yesterday. Windy, cold, no viz. All-in-all, miserable.

that is not an excuse. they never do any avy control for steinberg. only for the slopes.

most likely they'll be open at least for the weekend.

As of last summer, there is no issue skiing whatever you want from Kliene Matterhorn. Over and over, me and my friends ducked under the ropes right next to the glaciar palance thing, in full sight of all the resort staff.

Don't let the "one lift" fool you - there's plenty of great stuff to occupy a few days at Kliene Matterhorn. I don't remember exactly but I think it was at least 800m vertical drop from Kliene Matterhorn to Trockner Steg. You have great ski touring and ski mountaineering possibilities on the 4000m peaks of Breithorn (5 summits), Castor, and Pollux with even an overnight bivuac hut (the Rossi e Volanti). And you have the Gravity Park on top of that.

But the skiing is as serious as it gets in terms of glaciar hazards. Don't think about it unless you have somebody with local knowledge with you and/or a full glaciar kit both for rescue and escape from danger areas (ability to rope up and belayed downclimb, skins and crampons/ax for bailing out upwards, etc.).

so how sure are we that there will be skiing available at the weekend? it's mighty temping to pop out but i don't want to drop a load of cash on flights (and miss out on drinks with London maggots) only to find it's tourists only on the Titlis

i tried emailing the tourist office but no word yet...

    from the eberg tourist info:

For the weekend the slopes Ice Flyer, Terrainpark and Skiweg are open. The rest is free and not prepared. There is enough snow until 1900m. The slops are only open if weather and snow conditions permit. Please contact our homepage for actuel informations.
so who's gonna get some june pow? i'm serriously considering it.

yeah, it took them over 24 hours to answer my mail too, got it this morning.

snow to 1900m sounds like an open invitation to ski down to that level, right? does that get you all the way to Trubsee? I can't tell the elevation from their maps.

Hey Euros I'm back in Chamonix and it seems all my friends are either away for the "dead" season or off sport climbing in Gap.

Anybody up for something? I heard the ski out of Cosmiques/Rond is still OK although I suspect the snow is bad by now. Personally I'd like to tick off Mont Maudit or Mont Blanc.

There's a fold-out sofabed in downtown Chamonix free for visitors should the day get long.

Which route are you planning to take down Mont Blanc - trois montés?

did a skier passing you with stormrider dps hand you a pole and give you a little unasked push on an uphill section of traverse out from steinberg?

    that would've been me.

I'm easy. Either that or the Grands Mulets. Actually I'm more interested in the Mont Maudit since I've already done Mont Blanc and the Tacul, so in that case, down the North Face of Mont Maudit, skin back up to the col on the Tacul, and down the Tacul back to the Midi.
