speaking of pimp minivans, I just spent 2 weeks driving a MB Vito around southern Italy… maneuverable, swallowed cargo like a tramp, could do 150kph on the autostrada… gotta say it was pretty fuckin’ sweet!

but not as sweet as seeing sleds like these all over the place [emoji16]

Our 2013 Outback is slowly shitting the bed, over the last few years it's gone from burning one quart of oil per 3,000 mi to 2 quarts. Local excellent subie mechanic says it's not worth putting a new engine in because the CVT probably won't outlast the engine by much.

So, fuck. Fancy Euro wagons are out of our price range, so we're looking at another Outback, a CX 50 or maybe a stodgy ass RAV4 like every suburban mom in America. Wish we had grabbed a Regal Tour X when they were blowing them out a few years ago.

Drive it. It might burn a quart every 1500 for tens of thousands more miles. My old one did. Eventually it will kill that cat and give you a P042 check engine light, but just ignore it.

That is what sucks about Subaru's right now. Buy them new and you get 175k and thrn you are probably screwed. Fine for people that trade up but I never sell. Buy a Toyota and you still have 100k left at least. Hopefully they have shit fixed, but prove it to me, fuck them for their dedication to that shit rubberband CVT.

The CX 50 Hybrid is cool with the exact drivetrain as the 25 Toyota Rav4 . I hate that the B pillar is so far back it makes getting out of the backseat difficult, and that stupid scroll wheel in the center console for the screen and no lane keep assist on any of them. Dealers have them discounted which makes them cheaper than a Rav4 and they are very available on lots in every city.

If we had to buy now, it would be that or the CRV Hybrid. Better choice is the 26 Rav.

Also, Signia. Perfect wife wagon but a bit pricey and less luggage capacity.

It's at 125k miles, this one has burned some oil almost from day one. Our in-laws have one from the same year and have no problems with it. Subaru actually did a recall of engines from this year for excessive oil consumption, but we didn't burn quite enough to qualify and I was too dumb to siphon out a little bit of oil so they would give us a new engine.

Thanks for your thoughts uglymoney, the Mazda is probably a leading contender because it seems to be a little more fun to drive than the RAV4 and I'm a little reluctant to reward Subaru for iffy reliability by buying another one.

The mechanic also said to keep driving it, he said the increase in oil consumption may stop, but my wife is worried about getting stuck on the side of the road and/or needing to buy a new one in two or three years and getting fucked by tariff pricing.

I've been describing all the crossovers as looking like prop anal beads from a spoof porn film called Star Whores. They all have that bland futuristic rounded egg look. If we could just hit Mega Jillions, I would buy a tastefully restomodded AMC Eagle and call it a day

Try the Mobil 1 High Mileage formula for the Subaru. I know I sound like a crazy internet oil expert by suggesting this, and I hate me for being that guy, but this worked for our Prius. We were using a quart about every 3.5k, now I add less than one quart between 10k oil changes at 275k.

The oil seals won't leave your wife stranded unless she runs it out of oil. The CVT might though.

Seems like about eighty percent of cars these days have that basic anal bead shape

FWIW, I had a BMW motorcycle that consumed oil until I switched to Liqui Moly, then it stopped needing any top offs between scheduled changes. I'm not suggesting your Subaru needs expensive German oil, but a different oil that still meets the right specs might help.

Yeah, that totally makes sense. Our mechanic said that Subaru actually specs a higher viscosity oil for this engine in Japan and suggested we could try that next... But we're probably off to test drive a Hyundai Tucson hybrid sometime this week. Their warranty really puts Subaru to shame

Idk, Hyundai 4 bangers don't have the best track record but a new warranty is a new warranty. I would add some 40 weight and drive it like I stole it until it doesn't run anymore but I know people people pay stupid money for used Subarus in the NW so getting something back isn't a terrible plan.
Realistic changing oil weight wont compensate for a poorly manufactured engine and/or shitty rings from jump. Maybe consume a bit less at best.

dan - I just purchased a 2023 Outback in your neck of the woods. It replaces a 2017 with 120,000 that we bought used and put 60k miles on it. Nothing wrong with it. The 2017 replaced a 2008 that just had a catalytic converter fail that finally put it out to pasture at 330,000 miles (1 head gasket, 2 timing belts and other misc repairs along the way).
I just go look at consumer reports and end up buying Subarus because they are the best value for money for what I use them for.
