I jumped into my truck, my old phone fell out of my pocket and i ran over it, still works but thescreen was hard to read which kind of sucks but these things don't last forever ]so it was probably time for a new phone .

The sales person tells me there are no finger print readers but I wank around with it and find out it has facial recognition which she never told me so sometimes it works and sometimes not so what is the story with facial recognition ??

I have been on Xfinity Mobile for years now as it was the best deal going by far if you were a light data user and an Xfinity internet customer. In the interim a few things have happened: Xfinity internet and mobile prices have gone up, Google Fiber came to my neighborhood, the kid grew up enough to get his own phone, and the wife and kids iPhones seem to gobble data for no reason whatsoever so the full potential cost savings of the Xfinity Mobile pricing scheme do not get realized. So, considering dropping Xfinity for GFiber to get waaay faster home internet for $25/mo less, but need to figure out a new carrier and whether I will actually save money. Paying about $170/mo on average right now for combined home internet and 3 mobile lines. Telling Xfinity/Comcast to fuck off to the sun also holds some appeal.

I'm at 7 months on the Pixel 9 from Mint and am very happy with it. $580 for the phone and a year of service was a fantastic deal.

Mint is basically T-Mobile, and I've found service to be nearly equal to Verizon on 2 trips to CO & UT, as well as a bunch of wandering around CA. & NV. IDK if I'll be able to renew at $15/mo next year, but I'll shop around if not.

The most recent Android phone I am carrying now has facial recognition on it. I set it up, and it demanded I not have my glasses on. I wear my glasses all the time and it is such a pain to take them off to get the phone open. So I disabled the facial and sticking to fingerprint and the pin code as the only methods...

I grew tired of Verizon towers also and spots that had no service. It was a prepaid and they started offering Hot Spot and I had issues getting that working (needed a new Sim)... But they also did not allow or support Wifi calling (someone said because of the Wifi calling and the 911/GPS issues that could be encountered- but not sureif that is the reason.) In sprin I was shopping and spotted there was a Mint 3 month unlimited talk, text, and 5 Gb of data sim starter sim card package on clearance. It normally was $45 ($15 per month basically) and they had them marked down to $13.xx each (plus sales tax). The only catch was that you had to activate the sim and deal within 30 days of purchase. (So you could not purchase a stack of them and keep applying them after the 3 months is up..) I ported my number out and over to Mint. So far there are many spots that it works and Verizon did not do very well (Verizon coverage took a hit with their shutdown of CDMA and the 3G towers. Also many places that they would not have any 5G (let alone there is no 5G Ultra that is not anywhere close to areas I go. I do notice that if I am inside some buildings, I may not have any signal or it will show a signal, but the data is pretty slow. If I step out of the building it works better. I few times the voice quality is not as good also... But for $4 and some change per month for cellular service, it is a good experiment so far. Not sure after 3 months if I'll move up to a higher amount of data on Mint still or will stay on the 5 Gb of monthly data.

I had Google Fi a few years ago, which is primarily T Mobile. Coverage was horrible outside of big cities. If crossing Nevada, it would sort of work along I 80, but not reliably.

Verizon is still the only carrier with any service at my house, and even it isn't great here. At home, I run calls through wifi, which works great.

Thr funny part about Fi is that it used to use United Cellular too. Which was great in Downeast Maine. Apparently they dropped tgat carrier, which i found out just now.

Huh. I drove from Carson to Elko & back last weekend with my GF. She's on a Pixel with Verizon. My service was at least as good as hers everywhere we looked, and better in spots.

A few days ago I picked up a signal on top of Incredible Hulk in the Sierra.

T-Mobile now includes starlink and the latest phone for free and 250g hotspot a month. Can upgrade every year to latest phone for free.

Pretty much no brainer for 75-100 a month ( my bill is somehow 75$ a month despite being on the 100$ plan)

Plus starlink. I've been starlink since beta a couple months ago. Anytime I go out of service it pops up. Just text for now. Still a huge bonus at no cost. Eventually data they say.

I haven't looked around they just kept adding shit to my plan now it's pretty mega.

That'd be pretty handy when you're living in a van, down by the river.

That's a pretty impressive package from T Mobile. Still useless to me, as T Mobile doesn't provide the coverage I need.

God damn. If the coverage works, can I upgrade to ad free for cheap?
Was thinking of just going Spectrum since I use them for internet and it's free for 2 years and what I have with the family now kinda sucks. Xfinity uses Verizon towers, but I don't even get notified of voicemails, let alone visual voicemail. My Dad doesn't get notified of texts. There doesn't seem to be any wifi calling available and hot spotting is slow AF. But I have an unlocked, paid full phone, so yeah.
We had T Mobile for a second. It was ok. The service where they live sucked though. They're moving again anyway. Verizon is still better in Montana. Especially out in the boonies.
    Anyone use Spectrum?
    No longer stuck.

Any of you use a folding smart phone and happy with it? (no issues with the screen cracking?)

Considering this Motorola Razr, 2024 version - free, but must buy two months of premium service from Total Wireless (=$110) and port in number from other carrier.

Moto downside is limited system upgrades, so the phone will age out quicker than its hardware.

Ya, no. I got sick of the limited Moto system upgrades and jumped to a Samsung S24 with a killer Black Friday deal. Yes, it's now n-1. I still get about 5.5 more years of upgrades, roughly. The screaming Moto Black Friday deals come with about 11 mos remaining, if you're lucky. It would take a lot of extras for me to drop big coin on a gee-whiz Moto.

I've been using various iterations of the Samsung fold for years. They are not particularly durable and I have had some issues with the interior screens starting to develop a crease at the fold. If I were buying phones with the goal of keeping them for a long time until they were no longer supported then I would look elsewhere for sure.

almost done paying off my Pixel 7a. Considering whether I let this one ride for a while or whether I upgrade since I never thought this phone was all that great.

Don't want a monster (I do need to put it in my pocket) so the XL phones are out. What's the word on the 8s and 9s (regular, pro, a versions)?

I cant answer directly. However, back in December I looked at the Puxel 9 and Samsung S24. I chose the Samsung. Even without the screaming deal from Google Fi, I liked the Sammy specs and reviews better. S25 is out now. One annoying feature of the S24 is the fingerprint reader location. Its in the front glass and even choosing an explicitly compatible glass screen protector, it's hard to get it to scan reliably. I have no idea where they put it on the newer Pixels or the S25.

I don't use the fingerprint reader and I am fairly committed to sticking with a Pixel.
