Anybody got a line on an S24 case that has port covers AND works with magnetic car mounts? My search on Amazon is giving me one or the other, not both. I like magnetic car mounts and absolutely need to keep pocket dust out of the charging port. I haven't gotten into wireless charging but I suppose I can now. Does the Sammy offer slow charging in the battery app if I put it on a fast charger? My Moto has learned my habits and slow charges when I plug it in. It's smart enough to know when I usually wake up and gets it ready for that time.
I like magnetic mounts, and my nice case did not have it, so I used to tape to attach a square steel plate about 1"x1" to the inside of the case. Worked like a charm for free.
sigless.
I know a few people who just slapped a plate underneath the case to make it magnetic if you don't care about wireless charging.
That said, I'm running a faux magsafe (Spigen magfit) on my s24u and it is pretty fantastic. No misaligned (magnetic) qi charging and strong enough to use magsafe mounts if desired. I know they sell just the ring to add to your own case but I'm not certain how hard it is to align properly.
Samsung does have the ability to control slow/fast charging both wired and unwired, along with battery protection options to keep it at 80% charged or "adaptive" protection that will only max it to 100% just before you wake up.
That's one of the dumbest nanny features I've experienced on the Pixel I got last year. There's nothing like getting up oh-damn-it's-way-too-early to go for a big MTB ride only to discover your phone is only half charged because it doesn't think you'll be getting up for another few hours. I had never heard of this feature and had to wait an hour with the phone plugged in after I figured out it wasn't a defective cable after all, and then how to disable that function.
The pixel 9 screen scratches way too easily. My P3 looks better than my month old P9P.

So bumping this thread- needing another cell phone as the one I've been carrying took a dive out of the holster and screen is all cracked. Still working probably thanks to the screen protector on it held the glass in and touch is mostly OK. So no Apple, Android options are what I am looking for. Also do not want to spend $1000 to $1400 for a highest end new flagship phone from the top 2 manufacturers- Samsung and Google probably. I've had Samsung, nice products for the most part, but even refurbished or used they are expensive any more. I've had a number of Motorola's and they mostly are doing the job for what I need and not a big hit on the budget.

So there are one or 2 options I've come across- a Google Pixel 8 that is on sale for $300 off their retail price. Others are some refurbished Samsung Galaxy S series- FE- S22 FE maybe. Or the Motorola deals out there starting at just over $109 for the entry level, $199 for the G series and a few in between. A few of the Edge phones are up there close in price to the Google Pixel 8 or more. My list of features really can't be met anymore. Many have no external Micro SD card slot any more to store photos (one thing that a few of the Moto's do have in new phones), All are getting away from a wired headphone jack (nice for FM radio as they have that cable for an antenna basically) and most that still have that are really old Android OS versions and getting left behind. Wireless charging would be nice also.
So used or refurbished is only saving maybe $100 over new deal on the Google Pixel.

Starlink coming to T-Mobile. Included in top plans. Free upgrades whenever. No phone cost. 50gig hotspot per month
I just went through it all last month, and found about the same differential. I didn't want to roll the dice on a "refurbished" phone for so little savings. That led me to just get a new Pixel 9 through Mint. $580 for the phone and a whole year of service was by far the best deal I found.'
I've been on Verizon for like 15 years and was pretty worried about the T-Mobile service. To test it out I drove across NV & UT to CO for an ice climbing trip in Jan. I had 5G service in way more places than I expected and 4G filled in otherwise. It was probably not quite as good as Verizon in the remotest parts of Hwy 50, but overall I was pretty pleased. If Mint stays $15/mo for unlimited service, I'll be a long-term customer.
The Pixel 9 is pretty nice. It's a bit bigger than the S22 it replaced, which I'm not happy about, but the battery life is incredible (I charge it every other day) and some of the Pixel features are pretty cool. I played with Gemini a bit, but it's not very useful for me. The composite group photo thing is neat and works well.
ride bikes, climb, ski, travel, cook, work to fund former, repeat.
Google Fi customers can get some pretty good deals. Base Samsung S25 for $299, requires keeping it active on Fi for 120 days. I wanted a new phone in December so I got same deal for an S24. I couldn't wait for the S25. The S24 is smaller than the Moto it replaced and that's a good thing IMO.
I looked at Mint, I may reactivate my Visible account and try to do the move of it over to test (can't get the deal unless you port your number over as part of the order)...I just went through it all last month, and found about the same differential. I'll probably have to go to a store to check out the size of the Google Pixel series. Probably do not want the Pro due to the increased screen size. My existing phone is 6.5 in, in height. I did not realize the Mint was a Google Pixel 9 and not the 8 series (they have the Pixel 7's listed also, but no option that I am seeing on any Pixel 8)
I did not check Google Fi out, but not sure I'd want the S25- maybe the S25+ (Plus) I'll have to compare the screen size and measurements- 6.5 in height on existing phone is about as big I want to go (+.1 or .2in additional I guess would not be a big deal breaker... But too small of a screen and I have had issues with the keyboard and don't want to go too small, or too big with many of the Ultra or Pro series. I did not like the S23 Ultra square boxy screen and no rounded corners for some reason.Google Fi customers can get some pretty good deals. Just looked at all the Google Pixel series- Pixel 8, 8a, and 8 Pro and then the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro. I am seeing most of the non-Pro models are 6 inch screens. I definitely have to rethink the screen size. Most of the Pro's are much closer to the screen size of my existing phone.. And the Pro's are all up there in pricing of $550 to $600 even with the deals of a port to a new service.
I'm not a fan of the ever expanding phone size. IIRC, over 6 inches or so used to be considered a "phablet". I'm liking the relative step down in size of the S24. As far as the phone itself, I'm glad i got it heavily discounted. I don't use any of the gee wiz features. And Samsung sure wants me to use some annoying things. I went with the S24 because I had grown tired of the larger Moto G series with poor durability
In the hands of a gorilla and I wanted a phone that will receive OS upgrades for longer than 18 months. I miss the headphone jack and SD card. I don't like the Samsung onscreen fingerprint reader, it is really picky, even with a high quality brand name screen protector that claims to have fingerprint compatibility.
I agree that they have mostly grown too big, like 'Muhricans.
FWIW Pixel 9 and 9 Pro are the same size, just a little bigger than the S22/23/24/25 base models. The 9 Pro has better specs than the regular 9. The 9 Pro XL is big. AFAIK there are no other current smallish phones on the market.
S22 on left, P9 on right. I prefer the smaller one but can accept this size bump in exchange for the battery life and performance.
ETA: I guess pics still don't work. Anyway, P9 is like 3/16" taller and a bit thicker.

I picked up a pixel 9 pro the other day. The size is a welcome reduction compared to the pixel 6 pro. The pixel 6 pro was great otherwise. So, I took good care of it for the 3 years or so I had it, and att was kind enough to offer me a trade in value. I got the 9 pro for $32/mo I think, and att credits me $32/mo. Free phone. Good deal I think.
sigless.
Free phone is a great deal. I had to pay cash for my Pixel 8 last year. But I wanted an unlocked phone (it was also cheaper at Bestbuy). I was pleasantly surprised when the 8 was about 1/2" smaller than my Pixel 3.
