A lot of people would consider passing on an escalator to be rude, especially in an airport where people have luggage. This does not apply to the moving walkway, where the sign tells you to stand right walk left. This also does not apply to the NYC subway, where rudeness is a feature, not a bug.

Stressing over the extra 30 seconds you gain by walking up an escalator is hazardous to your health. Yeah, on staircases you have to pass people going the other way but I can't remember the last time I encountered another person on a public staircase.

On public transport-- JP has some of the best. But I've recently discovered that I prefer driving to/around Tokyo when I visit instead of using the trains. My wife thought I was crazy until I explained how incredibly smart Google Maps has become. Then I discovered how fun it is to drive around that madness. "If I'm on a train, the view is my phone's screen. If I'm driving, the view if fucking Tokyo." The only problem is parking, which can get stupidly expensive if you're not strategic.

That’s an amazing shift from the days of getting crap over the phone directions which started with leaving from a specific exit or you were fucked already.

I used to walk about 5-10 minutes from the train station to one of the companies I worked at until 1 day the boss took me out to lunch and we walked around the corner to the same station in about 30 seconds. I had know idea. Tokyo streets are pretty insane and a perfect use for Google or other map apps.

For me, it was always less about the time saved and more about moving my legs a little bit in a day that likely involved a fair amount of sitting on my ass.

If you have a regular-size piece of luggage (not carry on) you pretty much take up 3/4 of the width of the average airport escalator. Old goat is right, trying to squeeze by is rude. Chill out and enjoy the ride.

I was in SFO yesterday on the escalator and as it happened I had a bag to check. I actually considered what would happen if some dipshit tried to pass. There was like 12 inches of space. Not nearly enough room for you worthless fat asses.

Airports and luggage are different. I’m talking commuting escalators. Yes, part of it is just moving your legs a bit before you sit in a cube farm all day. But like others have said, NYC Transit also has several long escalators or the need to take several escalators before reaching street level.

What triggered my rant was my experience the other day where there was an escalator full of people standing on the right with nobody on the left… except for one oblivious idiot that couldn’t tell she was the outlier.
