If anyone wants to stay cheap in Teton Village from Mar 29th on, hit me up

The public comment period just opened for Grand Targhee's proposed expansion. Curious to hear what people think as I know there are strong opinions on both sides. I work for Targhee so I have some bias but wanted to hear what the collective had to say. More info found here: https://grandtargheeresorteis.org/
The published EIS can be found here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=58258
I have skied Targee dozens of times over the past 15 years, but only moved to the region this season, so I don't have the context to understand how expanding the SUP to include Mono Trees and South Bowl would impact the skier community. What was the general community attitude in the previous comment period?
That's a lot of buildings. In my mind, that is going to change the character of the resort much more significantly than lift expansion. Restaurant at the summit of Freds and the top of Sac seems excessive. Top of Sac would be more beneficial for skiers, considering the bulk of the skiing would shift south with the Mono and SB expansion.Construction of full-service on-mountain guest services facilities at the summit of Fred’s Mountain and at the top terminal of the Sacajawea Lift, a facility at the top of the Shoshone Lift, two onmountain guest facilities in Rick’s Basin and at the top of Lightning Ridge, and two storage and vault toilet facilities at the base of the North Boundary and Blackfoot Lifts;
Where do they plan to add ~450 lodging units with parking that they reference in the EIS? There is no mention of any additional parking.
Is it still the plan to replace DC with a chondola? That seems like an odd choice, unless the cabins are just to get footies up to the Fred's summit restaurant?
We'll be staying in town th-sat nights, attending a wedding friday at the center for the arts. skiing the village fri and sat. Looks like conditions will be iffy, but stoked none the less! Any meetups or anything going on these days like pre covid?
My cliff notes:
Not a fan of the proposed SB expansion. The amount of time the skiing off Peaked is fucked will be further amplified in a south facing bowl that gets wind scoured and sun baked. Yea, maybe that’s not a legitimate reason to shut things down but it’s true.
The scenic (visual and audible) impacts to Teton Canyon and greater JSW are real. Everyone just talks about seeing a lift or two up there but rarely have I heard anyone discuss the impacts bombing will have on the overall multi use experience and wildlife in the canyon. Figure 4 shows them putting two howitzers up there… yea fuck that. ETA, this is mentioned in the report.
In regards to the building, it seems like they’re just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. I haven’t made it through the entire report, but will say building 3 on mtn restaurants is more than excessive.
I’m all for more bike trails within the existing SUP. Feel like that can be accomplished with pretty minimal impacts. In general, the resorts out west are blowing it pretty bad when it comes to generating revenue from mtn bikers. Currently there is no US Whistler. Who’s going to be first and rake that cheddar?
TLDR Seems like Targhee is trying to go full Mickey. Never go full Mickey.

Those in the know are already skiing in mono trees and south bowl. Mono trees is low elevation, old growth, short vertical and mostly south facing. It is great for a a quick OB lap mid winter but it is going to be ruined if Targhee cuts runs in and builds a lift there.

Ditto to what East or Bust said about south bowl. It's a good place to ski in certain conditions but it also doesn't need a lift and control work there will have impacts all over the canyon.

I'm mostly indifferent to the idea of on mountain dining within the current boundaries. A race course surface lift would probably get a lot of use. The other proposed lifts inside the current boundaries are a complete waste. There is no reason to put those other lifts in. All the terrain that they would serve is already well served by existing lifts. Maybe spend some money to build a chair barn at the base of colter so that the lift maintenance crew doesn't have to spend 3 hours hammering rhime off the cable every time it snows.

Oh we can do that. We don’t even need a reason
@kevo did we share a chair last Tuesday and discuss the lack of garage on colter? I cannot believe ownership would opt for infinite man hours over a barn.
3 on mountain restaurants? Sounds like they are making unreasonable requests and hoping to get 1. I’m not even sure where a lift would go for the Mono trees, I ski over there all the time just to get away and it’s short.

::: peeks into thread from up north::: RE east or busts comment about MTB: Mountain Bikers are still the fringe when it comes to actually generating revenue for resorts. Look at Big Sky as a perfect example. We have some great trails.....amazing really.....and lift served MTB only uses like 20% of the mountain if that. We (or Targhee for that matter) truly could be the "Whistler of the USA" but corporate seems to basically loath the MTB crowd. After many years of well attended enduro racing at Big Sky it seems they put a full stop on that. The only actual event now is the Biggie XC race. I guess XC crowd actually eats and sleeps in the base area/spends money at the resort. The enduro trash/downhill types spend big $$ on their bikes and that's it. We sleep in the parking lot or just leave and go camp somewhere else. Locals/bozeman people might roll up solo for an afternoon of bike park or spend the day saturday and purchase a snack at the Moose. Enduro/downhill crowd just doesn't spend any money really on lodging/etc to make MTB expansion really worthwhile to a Boyne, etc. Don't get me started on live music on mountain/spring/etc.....Targhee DOES have that figured out. Anyway, skiers/ski families actually generate revenue for a ski corp in the winter. Must lodge because it's winter, ski rentals, lift tickets for a family of 5, full meals, lessons, etc..... A few mountain bikers pounding beers at their trucks and spinning laps for 4 or 5 hours on a Tuesday in July? Shit even a busy Saturday.....does it really pay at all? OK I'll stop c-----g up your lovely thread here.

@kevo, yes that was me.
Heading to Targhee Tuesday for a couple of days. Looks like maybe decent storm cycle.
That six inch storm last night really freshened things up. Fun stuff for sure
Made it out late afternoon. Didn’t do enough on the east slope, at least below 10 5. Up high was hairball ankle breaker with super dense grabby snow in the troughs. Wally’s and T3 were brutal. 1.5 base bevel hurt more than helped.
Down low on Casper/Teton/AV some quality glop skiing was had.

Lower faces were open today, at least until 2 PM when I left. Was decent semi corn 12 to 2 on the Colter ridges. Was crunchy higher than that.
Snotel shows 9 overnight and 3 this afternoon at Targhee.
