I'll be heading back north through Tohoku from Hakuba those three days, maybe even earlier around Wednesday or thursday the 29/30th.
We are staying in Morioka at the Dormy on the 30th-1st, and flying home the 2nd. The 29th we are staying west of Morioka at Tsunagi Onsen. Where we ski depends on conditions, there are a few areas within an hour of our hotel/ryokan. The 29th-30th would be ideal to meet up, and a half day on the 1st.

Quick question-upcoming trip. Extending my my stay and have a van rental in northern Hokkaido that I need to return and can not extend my reservation as it’s booked.

I need to reserve another rental however at this time there is only compact cars/ sedans available. Am I going to be mobile in a smaller car/sedan with 4x4/ snow tires or should I keep searching for something with more clearance.

    Thx fir the help!

A sedan with 4x4 and snow tires should work for most roads in northern Hokkaido, but if you plan to explore deeper snow or rural areas, keep searching for something with more clearance. Thanks for asking, and safe travels!

I had the same problem last year. Went from an X-trail to some tiny car that could barely fit the ski bag in. It turned out to drive beautifully in the snow and was fine.

Making the most of some bad luck on weather this trip.

Tuesday : Summited Asahidake. Fun in the sun.
Wednesday: Toured around Mount Furano and skied some couloirs with solid wind buff / settled powder. Zone was starting to get pretty tracked out by EoD.
Thursday: Summited Kurodake and did some laps on the upper mountain. Really nice settled powder up there still, not very tracked out. Definitely recommend this zone if anyone’s looking for places to go before the next snowfall.

Pretty beat after so much touring. Maybe some groomer laps today and maybe make our way to the southwest and pray for snow.

Cheers. It's a dry week until Tues/Wednesday-ish so enjoy your safe weather for now and get some touring in around Hakkoda. It's very rarely visible this time of year. I'm beginning my roadtrip tomorrow down to Nagano and will circle back up north next week and try to catch you guys at GetoKogen, et al., around Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. Maybe. I have to stop in Tokyo before then for some meetings and those do have a habit of growing into other meetings. I'll stay in touch via WhatsApp.

While your arrival days may not be the blizzard you were hoping for, be stoked it's a safe snowpack for exploring. Get your sea legs under you and finish the trip in the blizzard.

Would love to meet you, mate, but I'll be in Nagano for the next 5ish days.

Had an amazing first ski trip to Hokkaido January 12-18. We didn't get any major storms although a few surprise 20-25cm refreshes which were greatly appreciated. Due to lack of new snow, no resort skiing but we did tour off Kokusai, Kiroro and Furano ski areas as wel as in the Daisetsuzan National Park and the Asahidake Ropeway. Despite lack of big storms we found untracked dry pow pretty much every run and had great vis/weather. Will definitely be back in the future, maybe Hakuba next time. Some pics:

Looks like forum still messed up for pics so not going to bother

Kokusai. 2 days post snow. Still lots via touring

Teine. 4 days post snow. Mostly sidecountry so gets hit harder and mostly groomers

Kiroro. 5 days post snow. Lots of pow still

Furanodake. 6 days post snow. Tour further west ridgelines. Lots of snow. Windslab starts at approx 1600m.

Temps holding at -4 or so approx

Thx for the update gents! I’m fresh in Sapporo. Ready to take on the next storms coming thru in the new week and hopefully add to the stoke for awhile. Looks like we are ready to get hit, cross fingers it materializes.

Good to get away from home as I can’t even say we have even experienced winter back in Banff area. I had a few good days in November but nothing much since….any snow will b good at this point. We just ski gravel and shrubbery these days…

Worst winter on record for cdn Rockies and in that direction I can remember in 40+ years of existence…

Forum does seem to be broken re: posting pics, quoting etc. That is brutal about the rockies teamdirt. Whistler was strong Nov/Dec but only about 30cm in January so far, bulletproof ice everywhere. Mountain biking time instead.

Sorry no pics, but Tohoku is firing safe, shallow, fast pow.

Driving to Hakuba tomorrow for a few days then back north to Geto Kogen at the end of the week.

Stay safe, everyone. It’s a rad season.
