If the patrollers miss 80 hours, they lose as much pay as they were calling the base wage be increased ;

The contract runs more than one year…

This could be settled on Thursday, but at this point I expect this to last at least two weeks ( - or VR hires replacements and runs their "Support Team" for the season ).

Anyway, doing some math on the wages issue, say 300 patrollers working a 6 month season, 40 hrs/wk. Would they settle for a $2/hr average bump? That's $600k, but the real number would be lower since not everyone is working 40hrs/wk for a full season. Call it $500k for shits and giggles.

Is that alot of money to Vail Resorts? Their net income last year was $230 million, EBITDA was $825 million, revenue just from lift operations was $1.4 BILLION. $500k is less than a rounding error to Vail Resorts.

So how many executive's bonuses would it take to cover everything the Patrollers are asking for? Well, CEO Kristen Lynch took home a bonus of $1.2 million in cash, plus another $2.2 million in stock options.

This is a silly argument. The CEO is responsible for a lot more than just the PC patrol. Take her annual compensation and split all of it across all the global employees of Vail and you’re looking at something around 16c/hour raise for each of them - going off a shorter estimate of seasonal employment length that you did.

Can Vail afford to pay patrollers and others more? Yes. Is that money hiding in executive pay? Not really.

Vail will probably pay for around 41-45 million employee hours this winter. C suite pay pool doesn’t go that far across 45,000,000 hours. By firing the entire c-suite you just got everyone an extra 23-26 cents an hour!

Again, money is out there, and it’s not hard to find but yall are looking in the wrong places.

Remember there are wayyyy more patrollers that work for Vail than just the park city guys and girls.

the restaurant employees union would probably be happy to step in if asked. I think Colorado has some state law that benefits ski areas screwing workers. Collective bargaining would enable ski area employees to negotiate that. I was a union worker and always believed every worker was intitled to the best deal they could negotiate. Collective bargaining is one of the better tools.

Most definitely.... This won't affect just PC patrollers but the whole industry. The last time Vail negotiated patroller salaries, my friends at alta got a raise as a result.

This is Exhibit A, why everyone owes some benefit or aspect of their job to current or historical labor unions. The lost wages are borne by the strikers, but a lot of times it improves conditions across an industry.

Since the compensation for employees at other resorts isn't found in their contract, I doubt it's a thing they are actually bargain for, making a statement.

The sources of cheap labor are drying up and paying folks $21 / hr for a skilled labor position that requires medical qualifications and a myriad of other snow safety skills isn't going to cut it anymore. This isn't just a Vail problem.

I have zero sympathy for Vail getting squeezed here. They just pissed off thousands of customers which probably cost them $millions in customer cred to save what amounts to almost nothing in actual annual cost. This is just dumb.

This. It isn’t just patrol. I’m an electrician at Alta and Saturday is my last day working there after 20+ years. The constant taking away of benefits with lower pay than my electricians license can fetch on the open market became too much. Final straw was they restricted my ski time even when all my work is done. I quit and got a $30k raise coming with a swing shift so now I can ski golf bike every day and have way more money. And it’s way harder to get a licensed electrician than a patroller. The entire ski industry wants their cake and to eat it to. Problem is they’ve got away with it for so long. Meanwhile a ticket at Alta was less than $40 bucks when I started. Today after taxes people were paying over $200.
