Thats a bummer. I'm hopeful she's ok and will race tomorrow. That one ski not coming off is of concern.

It appears she’s fine, she got stabbed by something. Here’s her statement.

Looks like some idiot left his or her skis in the B-net and she ran over them

Ugh. I mean if that’s the case, that sucks but at least I think she’ll be fine.

I saw a pic where you can see her back/side sliding over a pail of Volkls. Could have been much, much worse.

Reports were that she was moving and taken via sled and off to the hospital. She then later while being treated posted a video on FB and IG with an update.

She did get a bit of luck as in nothing major - no broken bones, even with her ski not releasing. I really hope it does not get her mentally down and doubting herself.

Will not be racing the Slalom today as per her video- shouted out about Paula and Nina being just off the podium as the link to her on FB and IG and wished them well for today.

I don't know shit about ski racing really aside from watching, but what in fuck is shit doing laying around inside the fence line? I know people buff turns or whatever sometimes and assume photogs in there, but jfc the netting is there to save the racers not store your shit. Everyone inside the fence should have their shit on their back and skis on their feet so they can gtfo of a crashing racer. Common sense imo. Good thing these idiot race organizers don't ski the backcountry. /Rant

Not sure if it was a course worker, or what definitely needs to be corrected for today though.

Just heard PART of Mikaela's interview on Peacock about the injury and they replayed the footage. She has a "stab wound" - she is not sure where or when during the tumble, but suspects it was a base of the gate maybe (or I am wondering if tip of a ski pole?? ) with muscle damage and a knife like damage to her stomach at the side- more than just a contusion like a brush burn or bruise from gate or some equipment impact... She is not saying of course what the recovery time estimates are

If it's of any interest NBC (over the air) is broadcasting Killington now 12:30-2pm ET.
The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.

More details on the injuries and recovery time, direct from the source.

Yes, that was on Peacock at the beginning of their coverage. Impressive and Very Much appreciated her efforts to explain what she remembers and just being honest about where she is health wise. 100 will come at some point, just get better Mikaela!!

Best practice is for stuff not to be unattended on the venue, and I guarantee that will be further emphasized after an incident at the World Cup level, where venue access is tightly controlled.

With that said, leaving skis on is often impractical because the direction you want your body turned to video, shoot photos, etc, is at odds with the biomechanics of having skis on. They should be behind the B-net, but it's still a bit of a guessing game--ideal for crashes would be 4+ meters outside the net so they're not in the way even if the net moves as designed, but then you can't grab them to move if you need to (eg to address an issue lower on the course or to respond when one of your athletes crashes).

Same deal with bags--they need to be reasonably accessible for practical reasons (eg swapping batteries on your video camera), but you still want to minimize the chance it injures an athlete. In practical terms, at lower level races, if drills, rakes, shovels, and skis are outside the net, things are going pretty well. I'd expect better at a World Cup but I've never worked one and Saturday was the first one I saw in person.

It used to be common practice to just drill into the snow and leave a drill in place for easy access as long as it wasn't particularly close to the race line, but thankfully, that's now recognized as a bad, old habit that needs to be addressed when seen.

This is what created the puncture. Base of the gate, the yellow cuff at the base

Seems like an opening with an overlap could work. Maybe not.

If that is true I would think it time to reengineer.

You guys are totally armchair quarterbacking here. She races. I race too. We all know the risks going into this. Crazy shit can happen. I have shattered gates, taken gates to the head, ripped out gates. We race to win. Mikaela is a winner. Just wish her good luck in her recovery. She will bounce back when she is ready.

It seems like that picture (and the video) makes it clear the gate was the issue. IMO the video also makes it clear the skis on the side are also a huge threat and shouldn’t be going forward.
There could be holes in the net to pass through items beyond the first net or require padded ski bags to keep them nearby, as I can understand the need.
Requiring them to wear the skis would be placing a target on their heads. They could not evade at all and it could easily end up with multiple deaths given the 4 double sided swords flying around at impact. That’s a seriously bad idea.
But there are definitely ways to mitigate the issues this accident brought further into the limelight

But the IG clip shows the wound on her left side. Ergo, not caused by the gate as it hits her right side.

Good point. Watching the crash at .25 speed it was also her right side exposed to the photographers skis too. The only time you see her left side hit something was when she first hit the fence

Here's another clip with her own words about the crash plus another camera angle.
