Very strange, the new designs look tailored for someone to lose all their avy gear expeditiously.

Why can't manufacturers keep it simple? Noone needs this.

Founder of Raide here. We definitely thought through this in the design. We used the same zippers last year and didn’t have a single one fail. The zippers also don’t have much tension across them so we’re confident you won’t lose your gear.

We got a lot of feedback asking for improvements on avalanche tool access and I’m extremely excited about the ability to access the probe easier stow study. It’s cool to do a quick pit and not even have to put your pack down!

To warrant what? In my opinion it’s not some sort of large trade off only one zipper was added and one was moved. Do you think it’s too much complexity? Your avy tools are part of the essential gear needed for a ski tour. We made everything else super accessible in v1 with back panel access and the stash pocket except your avy tools were buried behind the helmet carry, so I think it’s a natural evolution to make them as accessible as other gear. There’s are also 2 additional pros that having all the tools separate makes them take up less unused space of the pack (same reason why HMG did it on the crux 40) and it brings the tools closer to your center of mass for skiing.

Psyched you are excited about it. Backpanel sizing (bottom of pack to top of back panel opening) is exactly the same as last year, but the area above the shoulder straps got slightly smaller. Last year it was 3" on the 40L, this year it is 2.5" on the 40L and 2" on the 30L. The tall is 2" taller than the M/L was last year.

No plans to integrate pockets directly into the shoulder strap. There is a 15mm webbing strap across the shoulder strap that makes it easy to put a water bottle on. I'm not a huge fan of bulk on shoulder straps. I am going to work on a Raide specific water bottle attachment, but it isn't in the works yet.

I was so, so skeptical on the top zipper. After using the pack I couldn't go back to another prototype that didn't have it. I went on a hut trip and didn't have a 40L with the top zipper so I crammed all my stuff into a 30L because it had the top zip and got my sledding friends to bring the beers up for me.

Do you have any plans to make a traditional airbag? I think a true lightweight airbag would do pretty well on the market given most of the current options go for heavier materials and “full featured” builds instead of light weight

I'm really excited about doing an airbag pack eventually. Being based in CO, I've wanted to use an airbag pack for awhile, but haven't liked a single one enough to buy one. The issue is, I don't want to ever release product unless I truly believe its the best on the market. Right now the best avalanche airbag tech is Litric and we cannot license it (I've tried), so that leaves us to use another subpar system, which I don't want to do or develop our own, which we currently do not have the resources to do. Hopefully one of those things changes in the next few years!

Yea, it essentially has 3 positions you can girth hitch the bottom loop to. The first 2 are just the bottom front corners of the pack so you can think about it as the same as the pack last year you just get to choose the diagonal ski carry direction. The reason you might want to do this is if you are traversing a steep slope and your tails are facing the slope they can drag and knock you off balance. The top strap also can switch between sides to match the side you choose and there is a stash pocket on each side. Each pocket also has a velcro closure this year because some people did have issues with the strap occasionally slipping out.

The third position is for skimo carry where the bottom attachment loop is on the wearers left side of the pack. This makes it so it is way easier to pass your tails through without taking your pack off. Once your tails are through you can reach back and pull the top strap around the top of the skis and then clip it to the shoulder strap. I am proud of how minimalist the whole system is while being super effective. If you open the "ski carry" dropdown or watch the walkthrough video you can see it.

All the attachment points are double wrapped and bar tacked into the seam so they are super durable.

Thanks for the support! Noted on the white pack with black straps/hip belt. I have contorted the back panel insert many times over and have not gotten any cracks to develop. I am sure hypothetically you could sit on a crazy sharp rock and crack it but my findings have been its quite durable otherwise I wouldn't have used it. I think you'll be hyped on the avi tools access, it is super different than everything out there, but it works really well, and if you don't care about the access it's at least super space efficient and skis better.

Would be very interested in seeing such a bag from Raide with some of the really dialed designs they've been putting out.

One thing I was trying to convey on the site was just how space efficient the Safeback system is. I would guess the 40L Arc airbag pack is more similar in usable space to our 30L and the the wight difference is larger and I think the SB 40L is nice because there aren't a lot of airbag packs (if any?) that can flex to overnights.

Yes, the 40L has it as well. It actually saves a lot more time on the 40L since the 40L has the cinch + roll at the top. Now you can use that space in between the cinch + roll while still having access to the top of the bag.

Which fabric(s) were changed to be more durable? The only one that seems particularly vulnerable on my gen 1 is the stretch fabric for the helmet carry, but I haven't had any issues.

The side panels and bottom are more durable. They have the same outer fabric, but the interior waterproof film is now sandwiched between the outer material and a very thin layer of polyester ripstop. I did this for 2 reasons 1) we did have some people wear through the side panels, it was only a 3-4ish people, but I would like there to be no material failures in the first year of using the pack 2) I didn't want the avy tools to wear through the film over a 10 year product lifecycle.
