I think I would rather have a reliable truck that cost a little more than one that is constantly in the shop getting work done. One that you just know will run well when you start her up vs one that you are always stressing about and throwing god knows how much money at.

I also remind myself that modern diesels make 2x the horsepower and almost 3x the torque of a 5.9 or 7.3… part of the territory I guess.

Because we are playing the game...what is your use case for the diesel?

I think diesel in a truck if you need to haul otherwise there are some costly breakdowns and the Diesel fuel is now often > RUG

I duno if its changed but 15 yrs ago in yurp 9 out of 10 cars that passed me on my bike were diesel

I ran a diesel VW that got > 60MPG for 8 yrs and missed having any costly repairs but i wouldn't now

Thats ^^ valid hauling but most of the PU trucks I see at safeway/ liqourstore are shortbed Rams with a tunnel cover and they don't haul anything heavier than a case of light beer

I on the other hand have better taste so I ordered a Tundra to transport my case of NZ pinot grigio

the diesel PU owned by good ol boys who don't really need them is thriving here up narth and the local repair shop is making good bank

my new neighbor who self admits to having a pink neck told me " I'm over that whole diesel PU thing and I think my next truck will be a nice tundra "

I tow, and have a lot weight in tools on board. I won’t drive a gas motor super duty. Mileage is terrible, power is lacking, and the bumper to bumper for 150k is a game changer.

How's the payment? But yeah, new with warranty for reputable older model and do your own work when possible. A gas 3/4 will pull a 10k trailer no problem. Its all choices and compromises.

Its your money, do what you wish. But the, "gotta have a nice truck" crowd spends theirs differently than I do. I know too many bros with the $80k plus truck that are asking when the check is coming becasuse "its a little tight this month".

It’s a work truck and pays for its self the way I see it but it’s also my truck I can throw my cap on and take off to ski anywhere. If I didn’t use it for work there is zero chance I could justify the truck, motor, or payment.

Base was 80k on mine, before tax title and warranty…. Then the suspension, wheels, tires, decked, toolbox, rack, cap hurt even more.

Bummer Woody, but yeah, it sounds like maybe one thing led to another, and hopefully that's that.

Used diesels are scary, because you just don't know. And new diesels are scary if you like having money.

Re: grocery getter HD trucks, I wonder what people think when they see me out getting groceries in my F450 without an excavator, boat, or camper in tow. Thinking I might need a bumper sticker that lets them know what's up if the camper tie downs and heavy duty stinger aren't overt enough.

Have you driven a loaded super duty? Comfort and ride are pretty hard to beat unless it’s a high end euro car. Even in that case the other half’s Macan sits and we usually take the truck anyway.

Yeah, they are super nice down the road loaded. Cowboy Cadillac. But they suck is cities, parking lots, empty and so on. But mostly I'm just flingin' shit. We can move on to tucking your jeans in your workboots and flat brimmed hats if you'd like. I'm an expert on lots of things.

[emoji23][emoji23] I don’t understand the tucking pants into boots shit in and never will… but flat brims will forever be the only brim.

I don't trust your opinion. You have stickers on your topper and...most likely...mud on your jeans.

Paid off, bought the truck for $23k, have owned enough 1/2 & 3/4 ton gas pickups to know if you’re towing or hauling something heavy especially over mountain passes a diesel is the way to go. My main debate is used diesel truck and $$$ in parts/labor or should you just buy a new truck with a warranty and pay the $1k in truck payments instead. It feels like a wash.

How many miles @23k and how many when the turbo went boom?

Its always N=1 but my 2013 6.2 gas has 140k probably 20k towing heavy including many trips to Denver over Berthoud with no problems. But yeah, I'll drive 35mph with the hazards on pulling a big hill with a skid steer.

My friends have had them all and used every strategy. Frequently all at the same time. Its shitty all the way around. Specially considering we have no dealers within an hour.

I have no idea. Hino 5.9L diesel motors are dead reliable in boats and the 2008 - 2021 Tundra already has a rear axle out of Hino trucks. All they needed to do is put a beefier front axle in the tundra with a heavier frame and bigger brakes.

    165k, 180k.

    CP4 went at 170k.

I almost sold the truck after I replaced the CP4.

But I decided I like it.

At this point, I’m keeping it. I bought a 2015 Tundra to run around town and keep the miles off the diesel and only use it for diesel truck stuff.

I like diesels a lot. I have two. They are old, almost never tow anything, but are mechanically interesting. I don't think I would choose a newer diesel to make money.

The Chevy 2500 has been trouble-free so far. Hit 5k miles, done some light and heavy towing which it does really well. Overall, so far so good. Oddly, I think the ride is slightly better than the Ford but not IFS FOR LIFE different. They're all heavy ass machines.

Good to know a domestic diesel is good for 5k miles.

    Re: Hinos, Cats, Cummins, Kubotas

My issue with expensive trucks isn't the motor. That fuels pump is, I think, a Bosch. It the $75K+ is crap that surrounds it. $1k headlight assemblies, auto drop down running boards that freeze up and don't work, TPS sensors that require too high of a running pressure and so on.

By my accounting, work trucks have become less reliable, more expensive to keep on the road and do the job I need them to do no better than 25+ years ago.

An 350 Platinum is awesome in the same way that many other expensive vehicles are awesome. And if it goes good with your bedazzled jeans, send it.

But new F250XLTs can be had right now for <$50K. That's a lot of cheddar for the ball tickling seats and the did you look at my wheels.

Its consumerism, choice, self justifications, freedom and the rest of it. Needs and wants. It extends to money of what we spend our money on.
