$5k for a V8 Eurosled seems very reasonable, but I'm not an expert on MB quirks for a car of that vintage.

Not bad price for a local runner if the maintenance logs look good. I had a 1984 TD wagon that was the cat's ass. I bought it in '92 with 40,000 miles on it and loved every mile I ever drove in it. Mercedes is a nice car but the older ones had something special. And they were easy to work on.

Solid proof that you chose well, my friend. That's a great feeling to have! Unlike the regret people probably feel when rolling off the lot with a brand new Dodge Journey, which is probably like a guy just leaving a Las Vegas wedding chapel with some past-her-prime floozie he just met and the beer goggles just wore off. "Oh, dear God. What have I done?"

Glad you're still enjoying the car! A 2017+ is definitely next for me! I'm still loving my 2015 (which was within my budget at the time), but the next gen's even better for sure!

Good! Bout damn time! Probably means I way overpaid for my E350 now that things are calming down, but at least it was 1/2 the price of a Sienna. Haha. Hopefully it means the S213 platform will become more doable for me in the nearish future tho!

If you get a car you like a few $k doesn’t matter. Used cars, especially older used cars, are about to get cheap again I think. I drive by a large Mercedes dealer every day and the huge used inventory lot is growing daily. It’s a multi dealership franchise and it’s all makes. Chart of used car prices has it back to pre 2020. My guess is a lot lower with insurance and interest rates slowing new car market.

True dat. Especially stings less when you don't have a loan on it. I'm pretty car loan averse (thus my more limited budget), so we pay cash for our vehicles. And since we tend to drive the crap out of our wagons, I guess car value doesn't matter much anyway. Will be pretty worthless by the time we're done with it, just like our Volvo was. We've already added 20K miles on our wagon since getting it about a year ago. On the plus side, since we're not freaking out about resale value, I absolutely get my money's worth out of it! It's made an admirable lumber (and occasional appliance) hauler. The 3rd row's been getting plenty of use too with the kid's cousins or friends. So yeah. It gets beat up. And we love it for that.

I sure hope so!!! We'll know things have really shifted when used Porsches finally come back down to earth like they used to be. In the before time. In the long long ago.

Oh yeah. That's what I meant. Like as in 911's. Used Cayenne's are a great value for sure. Sucks because there was a time when the 996 was pretty unloved so you could pick 'em up pretty cheap, even post-IMS bearing work being done. We can all even remember a time when our beloved air-cooled iterations could be bought for a song. But then about the point in my life where I could've FINALLY started to afford one, they starting increasing in value. And the 993 by a LOT! Still kicking myself for not figuring out a way to buy a '96 turbo I had a shot at for dirt cheap (back in '00). Sunnuva! Sucks being broke, eh? Haha.

Volvo v70 XC's are starting to pop up all over for sub $5k with mileage over 150k. All the ads claim they're super solid and that everything works. We just bought a van, and I don't want to daily it up and down the road to the mountain. Bad idea for a mountain commuter rig?

I don’t know anything about Volvo but I doubt there’s much risk of being stranded. Check any known high mileage mechanical issues and go for it.

Somewhere in this thread I've posted at length about our old '14 XC70 T6. Fabulous car that was a tank on the road and in the snow. 300hp/300ftlb gave that big car plenty of grunt to all 4 wheels. bright, airy interior with the biggest cargo area of any wagon.

That said, the pre-14 models were the ones with the awd angle gear failure issue rendering those cars fwd when it failed (didn't kill them mind you). Volvo supposedly fixed it starting with MY14 and we certainly didn't have any issues with ours. Traded it in when I got my old A4 allroad with around 120k on the clock IIRC and it was sad to see it go.

We’ve put $4k into fixing stuff and I think another $1k+ still to come
But it runs smooth and seems to fit the bill for mountain capable

Can you list what you've done for $4k? If there's a $5k rig that has most of your list done, might be a better buy than $2k followed by a week at the mechanic's.

Riiiight around that mileage and on up to 200K is when I put the most money into our XC70. Then after 200K, it was pretty much trouble-free. Honestly a pretty bomber vehicle BUT plan putting into it about what ::: ::: did as he mentioned above. For a cheap car and a bit of money thrown at it, absolutely a solid tank to beat the crap out of for a few years. And even AFTER the $$$ you might have to put into it, still way cheaper than what everybody wants for used 4R's and stuff. Haha.

Is a Q5 a wagon? Anyone got one? I've been seeing the 3.0s (more reliable that the 2.0 right?) and reasonable prices. 100k 2015s for 13-15k. That's basically Hyundai money and way less than a Toyota or a Honda.

I've only ever owned American trucks. On one hand, I'm scared of the maintenance expense but I've got nothing rational to back that up.

Stuff fixed:
Replace drive belt sys & water pump
Replace LF wheel bearing, spindle & strut
Replace RF cv axle assembly
Fix e-brake
Fix A/C (heat works)
Driver & front passenger window hollows cleaned out [windows would go halfway then autoopen instead of closing on one-touch, just cleaning the dust/debris fixed the safety retractions]
Both front light assemblies replaced after not being able to polish the lenses.
Plastic shit replaced: Cracked threshold trim at the doors. Missing spare tire lid handle. Missing trim cover behind center console where an ash tray might have gone. Cracked LR reflector housing trim.

Not fixed:
The button that swaps between radio, CD & line input sources. The spring is shot. But the CD/radio unit also runs the A/C controls so it’s $2k w/ Volvo parts. No aftermarket radio swap available per the shop guy. E will mostly just use the line input to connect his phone to the speakers anyway.

Generally, fit/finish is good. Was a mom car. Then a college kid car twice. One family. They took it to a local shop that knew it pretty well. Now it’s E’s to be a college kid car again.

It’s not quite a wagon, but close-ish. Around Carbondale-Aspen Q5’s are prolific; I’ve got 4-5 coworkers with one… They seem to hold up decently and handle everything fine. Just the standard cost bump for Audi parts+maintenance in some cases

Anecdotally and from idle chat with people who act like they know, I think those 2.0 after 2012/2013 were pretty solid. My son is still driving his a4 allroad with almost 180k on the clock, which is the same motor.

3.0 might be more fun, though.

My wife has a 2015 Q5 TDI. It's a nice car and with studded Hakas, unstoppable.
Only downside, they go thru a lot of windshields.
