Hell yes Gnar. I gotta get my ass up there and ski it one of these days.

Where Bunion for the deets re: Summit direct line?

I know it exists but have never been able to find a photo or some explanation of what the actual ski line even is.

The elusive Cornfed has been known to poach the tram face, along with a few other hearty souls.

    I wouldn’t do it without a parachute.

It was not until the mid-1990s that snowboarder Jason Shutz made the first complete glisse descent of Lone’s direct northeast face—in perfect style. Shutz followed the tramline then veered skier’s right over a cliff band and ridgelet onto the second hanging snowfield. A second jump led him to an exposed ramp that leads into the Big Couloir, which he schussed to the bottom in under one minute from the summit! The route is now referred to as Shutz’s.

RE: Dobies. I have skied it 5-8 times, several by hiking up, 2x by crossing over and from the Big and once in the late spring of 1999 where we experimented with traversing from high in 1st gully across and above Crons to the top of Dobies.

    That was intense.

One of the times I accessed it from the Big and was with Andy Tuller (Outaware). We had just reached the very top and were making a platform to get into our skis when a report of a skier VS lift tower strike on G1 occurred. We both started laughing as we were probably the closest and yet the furthest away.

Little know fact. Dobie was at one time the Patrol Director for BSSP. He was pissed about something, hiked up and skied that line (1st descent) and skied down to the locker room and quit. Hence, Dobies Exit.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

    Hey all,

A visiting Mammoth skier here that just finished up a five day trip to see my kid who's in school at Bozeman. He took me to Bridger on Friday, a first for me. We scored a fun pow day and skied bell to bell. My kid tried to kill me with two ass kicking hikes up to a ridge line. I was spent after the second one. It seemed that from the amount of people he knew in the lift lines that half of MSU must have cut class and gone skiing. Bridger is a really fun mtn with a cool vibe.

The highlight of the trip was Sunday at Big Sky and skiing the Big Couloir with my 19 yr old son.

Hanging out in the "penalty box." That's my kid in the back, and like a typical teenager, he's got his phone clutched in his hand texting his buddies that we were next into the Big Couloir.

Looking back up from the bottom. Snow was a mix of avi debris, some thick pow up high and some blower pow down low. A classic line checked off the bucket list.

My kid, still smiling from his tram run, late in the day under the blue dome of the Ram Charger. We don't have anything like that back home. Good times.

Just about to get on the road back to Mammoth after a very memorable trip. I'm already looking forward to my next time back. Cheers!

This is a timely post. I'm headed to Bozeman at the end of the month to check out MSU with my daughter (HS senior). Looks like a fun place to go to school!

Goddam, man - warmup on The Big?? That's aggressive.

Reminds me of a trip we took to Taos a few weeks ago - my eldest (22) convinced me we should do St. Bernard chute as our warmup run.

If she climbs, mtn bikes, kayaks and skis she could be an 8 year student of Uni @ BB.

Good old Bridger bowl university. Managed my first 100 day season freshman year and put on academic probation..lol. did finish in 5yrs though.

@bunion- traversing into dobies from 1st gully above crons sounds like a hell no. Most times I saw people ski it was hiking with the occasional patrol cutting in from the big. Ha, outaware, that brings back some memories. The dobies talk makes me remember lines I missed out on. Had one chance to ski little and pussed out.

    Great stoke y'all!

^^^ There was what looked like adequate coverage to traverse while keeping skis on. When we, Me and a patroller named Cary) got about 1/2 way across that coverage got thin and faceted and you were walking on tilted smooth andesite.

We pronounced it, "yeah, fuck that" but it wasn't the great place to try a kick turn so we toughed it out.

I bet Bridger could make some extra money selling parents a special "Student" pass for their kid that only works Friday/Saturday/Sunday while school is in session.

I don't know how the scheduling works now, but back in the day my bros and I were famous for only taking Tues and Thur classes. We skied/fished 5 days a week. B-town is a great place for school assuming you know what you want to study. I saw a few "I'm experimenting with school." kids drop out fairly quickly for the mountain lifestyle full-time. If I were to do it again, I'd spend a year working for residency and getting used to the town before paying tuition. It seems that first year was kind of a cover for discovering MT.

My best season in bozeman was one without a pass. Just a tent and a touring buddy who could also dedicate Fri-Mon in the mountains. Rest and recovery on campus mid-week made studying easy.

A bowl of clam chowder from the cafeteria and its endless supply of free saltines kept me well fed for a broke skier/student. I remember it fondly.

There is so much good shit the last few pages of this thread - I can't comment on it all but it makes me happy.

Great story about Dobbs! All your stories are great. Shutz did that line in one minute??? Damn. Kornfed would argue Shutz did not have a 'direct' line because he zig-zagged a bit. Kornfed claims to do the first true direct line from the top into Big though, most likely after he waited for your team to close the mountain as he hid and waited under the tram. You won't find a mention of that line in the Greater Yellowstone book unfortunately. Thomas did an outstanding job with it don't get me wrong, but there are lots of errors in it.

    Agreed.

Today should also be fun. Looks like snow favored the Big. I'll be in line early if anyone wants to meet up for a glamour shot.

Great photos and text about times past at Big Sky. Were control charges manually dropped in the high aspect parts of before the original tram? I know that artillery was used at one point.

    .
I lived at Alta for my first year after high school then moved to Bozo and attended MSU part time. For me, that just reinforced the desire to screw around even more in the mountains and it wasn’t the best academic plan. I wonder if I just went full time school if it would have been more productive. I think those concepts are unique to the individual and the neuroticism within them.
