Sister of one of my wife's childhood friends survived the Aurora theater shooting with her daughter. Serious PTSD. I think about that every time another asshole shoots a place up
A family member of the Maine shooter commented that he was a person experiencing an acute episode of metal health but that he grew up normal, wasn't crazy. Something flipped. Lost his job, lost his gf. Shoot up a bunch of people in places they use to frequent as a couple as revenge & to make it that much easier to want to kill himself. What a coward.
https://www.news-herald.com/2023/10/...edium=referralPolice across Maine were alerted just last month to “veiled threats” by the U.S. Army reservist who would go on to carry out the worst mass shooting in the state’s history, one of a string of missed red flags that preceded the massacre.
Two local law enforcement chiefs told The Associated Press that a statewide awareness alert was sent in mid-September to be on the lookout for Robert Card after the firearms instructor made threats against his base and fellow soldiers. But after stepped-up patrols of the base and a visit to Card’s home – neither of which turned up any sign of him – they moved on.
“We added extra patrols, we did that for about two weeks. … The guy never showed up,” said Jack Clements, the police chief in Saco, home to the U.S. Army Reserve base where Card trained.
Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry, whose jurisdiction includes Card’s home in Bowdoin, said the Army Reserve tipped his department in September to the reservist’s threats, and the sheriff sent the awareness alert to every law enforcement agency in the state after his deputy came back empty-handed from a welfare check to Card’s home.
“We couldn’t locate him,” Merry said, adding that he couldn’t recall if there was any follow-up because “I don’t have any reports in front of me.”
Yep, the same people who were ranting about how psychologically harmful it was to make kids wear masks during the pandemic were saying we have to turn elementary schools in to maximum security prisons with bulletproof glass, no recess, no sports, no concerts or theater activities, etc.. They are OK giving all that up to keep the guns but weren't willing to wear masks..
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!
Who are these people that you speak of? Mask at school were fucking stupid. They never made sense. Most parents I know say no to masks, no to assault rifles and letting kids be kids. There is a lot of people in the middle not far left like most of this board. There is nothing worse then people that can’t think for themselves and have to spout the cnn or Fox News talking points.
Ahhhh yes. A ski forum dominated by old rich white guys the main demographic of the far left.
If kids didn’t give a shit, why did the second masks became optional all the kids ditched them. Unless their parents watched a lot of cnn, then they had to keep wearing them.

Not all kids ditched them? We saw a tail off of the the masks as the mandates dropped, with plenty of kids who were on the more concerned side keep wearing them. I think more important is not declaring what kids want or prefer, but rather ensuring there's appropriate safety precautions based on proper medical guidance, not a bunch of opinionated jackholes suddenly declaring themselves child development experts when they don't even show up to teacher conferences.
Also it was mostly parents who stopped wearing masks first, and kids generally take the lead from their parents. Not to mention, my kids forget socks on a reasonably normal basis, so it's not like there's a shitload of thought in there from every kid.
I’ll never understand continually giving thoughtful measured responses to reactionaries. Good on you schuss but I’d given up on them in 2015.
No one wanted to wear masks all the time. I live in a pretty conservative area and talking with friends that are teachers in public schools, they had no problem with kids wearing masks. The kids just want to do the right thing and get along. Masks weren’t a problem but remote learning was.
Parents on the other hand, probably shrill people like yourself, were the biggest problem when it came to mandates. Don’t worry, you’re kids will likely be assholes like you because as they get older they become more like their parents.

I knew the Covid warriors would come out with pitchforks. So predictable. The rest of the crew that cheers unvaxxed people dying will chime in next. Carry on.
I find two things drive this (though I'm plenty guilty of the occasional reactionary bullshit)
1. How does it look like to an observer?
because shrill vs. shrill = both sides the same. Shrill vs. Thoughtful = "wait a second, is there actual thought behind some of these or is one just parroting their loyalty to some group?" - This is especially important in this debate, as I don't know a single person that hunts deer with an AR.
2. Personal standards
You can't call for others to think things through, use factual arguments and sense if you aren't doing it. Show up like a G, not a fuckboi.
I was busy trying to save the unvaccinated(mostly) from dying a horrible death. I’ve never cheered anyone’s death. Carry on

Fair enough. I guess I threw my hands up thinking “why am I taking all this time and effort to actually read and comprehend what’s going on around me when these dickheads can’t be bothered to” .
Thanks for a different perspective in dealing with these mushy brained dipshits.
Maybe not you sparkle pony, but if I go through the rat flu thread there’s a lot of you wishing death on people.
Why is hard for people to think of both sides. Ban assault rifles, the pandemic was handled poorly, Biden and trump both suck. What Hamas did was horrible, Israel doing some shitty shit too...... I don’t get having to be on one side or the other for everything.
fuck yer “both sides” bullshit.
fact.
Fuck your all or nothing bullshit
Fact
I work at a boarding school. The only thing less fun than wearing masks all the time was trying to get the teenagers to keep theirs on (ranking right up with trying to get them to actually go to bed on time).
In the spring of 2021, we dropped our mask mandate and almost immediately saw a significant increase in COVID cases. The mandate came back a couple of weeks later, in large part to keep enough students healthy that we could have a graduation ceremony with most students present. We saw a matching decrease in case rates with the return of masking.
So anecdotally, they clearly work, but getting teenagers to wear them is tough.
My toddlers, on the other hand, seem perfectly content to mask up; I assume they've seen plenty of adults masking and are trying to be like them..
Back on topic, Rep. Golden released a letter describing his thought process in changing his position on legal limits to access military-style rifles. I thought it was well thought through.
Kids from all different backgrounds were all in on the masks around here. Granted, I live near several major universities. it was the rednecks out in the rural areas that weren't keen on having to wear masks.. the same folks who think it's a great idea to carry a gun everywhere. YVMV.. obviously.
Tell the kids they have to wear masks until we can confirm vaccines are heling.. bad.. harms them emotinally.
Tell the kids we have to bulletproof everything and everybody inside and around the schools so we can keep our guns, no recess, metal detectors, no backpacks, pat downs good.. got it!
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!
