When I first heard about it, I was sorta pissed at the CBC. But, damn there's just too much proof. To bad, I quite liked her.

she did a really good adaptation of Eden Robinson's book " Son of a trickster " a series of books about life on the res for ghosts, not that I'm indigenous or a ghost but it was really well done so when it was canceled it really pissed me off

It was shot on the res with indigenous actors I imagine the film company was throing money around in an end of the road res so it was very life like had to be good for Kitimaat and I can't see where it benefited anyone to cancel the series

Kitimaat is 2.5 hrs west of here

So Kenny Satch, it appeared Buffy's brother tried to call her out years ago and was threatened with legal action. He knew she had deeper pockets than he did and dropped it.

What is tough for me is that she was such a vocal advocate for aboriginal rights and did plenty of good...all the while being a whitey from new England. She also looked Cree. Very very Cree.

If you read the whole CBC article it’s pretty thorough and unequivocal, and First Nations people are increasingly calling out these pretendians in this and a number of other high profile cases in Canada.

While this is probably the topic of many a thesis- here goes:

It may be because Canada had two main colonizers.

While the British won the 7 years war, they kinda got the feeling that kicking all the French out wasn't going to work - though they gave it a good go with the Acadians. The French were too many, it would cost too much to move them or keep them all in line and the would likely fart in their general direction and explain how all the British mother's were hamsters and their fathers smelt of elderberries

So, we started from a place of dual cultures (completely ignoring the 1000 existing cultures - because colonialism), so if we were to recognize that having cultural conformity was impossible, forcing it on other immigrants was probably not going to work either.

Then we were really hard up for folks to build a railway and then as settlers so for a while there and decided to "buy in bulk". So different ethnicities were marketed to and brought in as groups Dutch, Ukrainians, Russian, were asked to farm the prairies. English, Scots, Italians to mine Kootenays. Scandinavians to farm and log. These groups came over together and created communities together. (Again completely ignoring the Chinese because racist colonialism)

Around WWI times, we got a bit of a bug about being a nation. Our army had just saved Europe and all. Being lead by the Brits had shown us what a bunch of wankers their leadership was. Lord FukFace had asked many of our guys to charge stupidly at machine guns and that didn't sit that well. It wasn't until the end of the war when we realise we did a lot better when we lead our own. So we went searching for our identity (be clear - the Quebecois were not that keen on this war in the first place due to a societal colonial bullshit meter much more in tune then the rest of Canada). So this was a largely English speaking endeavor.

This lead to a bunch of navel gazing, where we decided that our national identity would be "Not American". So if the US was a melting pot then fuck that - we are something different.

In the late 1960s early 1970s, when Quebec was getting really serious want to "be their own thing" and we were celebrating our 100 years as a nation- Justin's dad went looking for a "national identity" again. He searched high and low and came up with "Not Fucking Americans" - or something like that I wasn't quite born yet. I have it on good authority that Pierre was the most Anglo Quebecois to ever go to Ottawa - so he was all in on the "hey we are all one", one what we still really haven't figured out, but I think most have given up giving a shit.

Justin's dad came up with a multicultural act, did a bunch of tv adds and cultural events promoting the mosaic. The concept found its way into our charter of rights and freedoms. (Being part of the Act to amend the British North America Act and Schedule B to the Canada Act 1982, 1982, c. 11 (U.K.), which came into force on April 17, 1982.).

.. and we have kinda all gone along with the myth. To be clear it is a myth. There is assimilation and mosaic, and mostly apathy.

Oh and it all belongs to the indigenous folks anyway so there is that.

Or I could be completely wrong - I wasn't even alive for most of that!

This would make a great Heritage Minute, or whatever those are called on CBC during the kid's programming. It's been a bunch of years, but we had CBC on the TV being so close to the Poutine Curtain and all. It helped thing #1 know a few things when he went to Uni in Canada.
