It's not bad - I was surprised to see it maintained and not overgrown. At least to the large cairn pile it was all clipped back.

I like it, but I'm a glutton for steep raw trails, it's close to my house, dog-legal, and never crowded. The knob with the big cairn is called K9.

It doesn't look like it will all dissolve, but trust me, it will. I'm usually targeting 80-100 g of carbs per hour, so I try to have that bottle cashed in 2-2.5 hours. Pre-measured baggies containing 200 g of mix go in the pack for refills.
That's for hard efforts, or anything over 3-4 hours?

Ha, I meant it like "It's not bad!!" As in good. I was pleasantly surprised it was maintained - that was great. And it's probably an epic sunset trail. A bit too loose and unsustainable in parts, but overall good. You drop so quickly on it - the visuals of looking up after 5 minutes of cruising down and seeing everything much closer - I was like - whoa this goes by fast!!

But for steeeep trails I can take my dog on - I have West side of Grandeur 10 minutes closer to me, and you can absolutely cruise up that thing. Or I can do shady and cool Thaynes to Desolation or Alexanders Basin for about the same drive to your trail - both are about 1000-1500 vert per mile. Or for a short quickie there's Jack's also nearby. If I lived near you I'd do your trail a lot too but I have good options near me. I didn't see one person either on your trail - I always see people on 'my' trails.

I'm definitely eating on anything over 2 hours, but if I'm keeping it it pretty relaxed I won't be as aggressive with fueling. Maybe 50-60 g/hr instead of 80-100. Anything over 3 hours and the bottle of syrup usually comes out.

My buddy is putting on a trail 5k in a month. And I figured it’d be fun to train for it a little. I’ve done a (slow) marathon but am not a big runner. I figure this is a good opportunity to work on my speed and a good intro to trail racing. I don’t have easy access to trails but my plan is to do lots of hills, add strides to my workouts, and obviously increase my pace. Any other suggestions? Anyone have a training plan they like?

Be really mindful of your foot placement. Running on tarmac can be a great way to tune out a bit but running on trails requires you to be alert cuz you'll eat shit as soon as your mind starts to drift

What's everyone wearing for socks these days? All my old smartwool and icebreaker socks are getting threadbare in the high wear areas.

Been using Stance running socks going on maybe 3-4 years now. Love em. I don’t think I’ve put a hole in any even after hundreds of miles on every pair most likely. Got 5-6 pairs I just rotate. Going strong.

I have a near identical experience with Darn Tough socks. I rotated between two pairs for a year while putting in pretty consistent big miles training fora marathon and they showed almost no sign of wear. I like their ski socks and dress socks too. They're guaranteed for life, whatever that means. As a plus, they're made in America if that matters to you.

I also like the Injinji toe socks.

I like stance, darn tough, and smart wool. Darn tough and smart wool take the wool approach if you’re into that, stance doesn’t. All good socks. Rei is having a Labor Day sale with a bunch of good socks including darn tough and stance

Wool FTW. Smartwool for comfort and fit, Darn Tough for durability. I'm lucky to get two years out of a pair of Smartwool socks (lightweight, low cut), but still favor them because they fit so well and are so comfortable.

Any 5k plan that isn't a "Couch to 5k" kind of thing geared to rank beginners should be fine. Don't overdo it on the high intensity stuff. Even in a 5k your aerobic base is going to determine your overall pace. Tailor the training to the course, i.e. don't do a bunch of hills if it's going to be on flat fast trails.

How many participants in this thing? A trail 5k sounds like it could be quite a shitshow (in the best sense of the term)!

Speaking of 5k's, I watched the 5000 m final at the T&F Worlds on Sunday. Winning time was 13:11, insane.

Hah, yeah, if you don't have much experience on trails trying to run a trail 5k at race pace is definitely a recipe for faceplanting. The two #1 rules for staying upright trail running: pick up your feet and let it dangle.

We have a five-race trail series here that's done well. Really fun racing, not a shit show at all. Plus side, if you've spent any time on the trail, you immediately have an advantage over a good portion of the pack. Downside, a couple elite ultra runners always show up and make everyone look slow without really trying.

Yeah, took me a while to find one, 5ks training plans definitely seemed geared towards beginners. I found this one, and it looks like it’ll be good to go off of.

    https://www.snackinginsneakers.com/a...training-plan/

He said 900 feet of elevation gain, so some elevation, but nothing crazy. Haha yeah, I have no idea on how many participants, he’s putting it on for his company and make a wish. Then doing ice baths and vendors. So more of a event thing than specifically a race. There will be a number of walkers

That’s crazy. Every time I look at professional long distance times, my mind is blown. Like the 100 mile record is at a 6:30 pace

The race was Telluride Mountain Run - https://www.runtelluride.com/40-mile-2021.

There was a 13, 24 and 40 mile option. I opted for the 40 and it was my first ultra. In hindsight I jumped in the deep end but it was amazing. Telluride is beautiful and this course gets you back into some basins and ridge lines that deliver on scenery.

There’s a section they named “mile and a half of sky” which was incredible and scary combined. Knife edge sections, 4 points of contact moves, etc with penalty for failure a 2000 ft drop. Race had spotters throughout this section and warned it could take up to 2 hours to navigate that 1.5 miles. It was special and terrifying. Aid station worker indicated many turned back and DNFed last year before entry. I’m on the fence that Id do it again but made it through. This is part of it but as often, the picture doesn’t do justice. We navigated that entire ridge line over Telluride Peak which I believe is 13,5000ish

This was around 12 miles in, weather was spectacular at the time….more on this later

    Running, Anyone...?

Bassackwards TR but started at 5am and running into 11-12k feet while the sun was rising was memorable

People were awesome, lots of joy and good vibes

Weather got a little sporty in the afternoon, they ultimately called the race around 3:30pm. 20 finished, 57 remained on course including me. Made it to 32 mi and 10,600 ft of gain. Really wanted to get the finish but stoked on the day overall. Amazing and challenging race - highly recommend…
