It wouldn't be a trail run without at least one minor toe-clip.

I should disclose that I only grabbed that crown by one second, which given the vagaries of GPS timing isn't very definitive. But, the guy in second is a serious local badass so I'm pretty happy to even get close to him. 3rd is over a minute back.

No need to downplay it, a win’s a win, and descending 2000 vert in under 12 minutes is cooking, KOM or not . Did ya bring your skis?!

    Definitely inspiring, nice work!

My boy had an age group win in his first cross country race of the season. Small race, but he beat the 2nd place 8-9 year old by over a minute and finished in a group of older kids who were all high-fiving him at the finish for sticking with them. He's the little guy in the orange shirt:

He's pretty psyched and so am I. I'm not sure he'll be able to stick with all children-of-professional-runners (there are many around here, including a couple on his team who have Olympic dads) when the larger cross country races start in a few weeks, but he'll be a lot closer than he was last year. He's outperforming his genetic code already.

Nice day out today. Valley to alpine and back, 16 miles, 6,700 vert. A little slow at 6 hrs, but did do 3,500 vert yesterday too.

Looks like another sick weekend Dan! How was descending Apollo in the summer? I've found that just downclimbing the western edge is my preferred way off the west slabs (when there's not snow in apollo that is)

Fun cruise up the backyard peak yesterday. Fun to see snow on the peaks.

Great stuff! You never know where it leads.
The picture made me think of my son. He hated XC at that age. His mom signed him up after he quit soccer so he had something to do in the fall. Lost his shoe halfway in his first XC race and finished on one shoe. Fast forward to sophomore year HS he started running again to get in shape for his winter and spring sports and he started finishing up the ranks. Decided junior year he was going to quit baseball and run track full time and we got a chance to go all over the country (CA, OR, etc) to see him run. It was a great experience. He's now running track at a D1 school. He didn't get his speed from me either.

Don't be a slave to stats, good to see some younger racehorses are figuring out a more zen approach to training.

“The runs just felt so much longer,” said Jacobs, 23, a three-time N.C.A.A. champion who recently turned pro. “That was one of my main problems with it. I wasn’t enjoying myself or looking around. Instead, I was kind of looking at the watch every quarter-mile to see how much longer I had left.”

“I like to focus more on the feel of everything and not worry too much about the time,” Jacobs said.

"Enjoy your time in the mountains, rather than enjoying how little time it took you to be in the mountains," Muted from the TGR boards said.

Carpenters record was the stuff of legend, especially as ultras/trail running became very cool and trendy in the Aughts and people realized this beast of a mountain runner had set a massively high high-water-mark on that course in a quiet period for running/trail running - and continued to own the Pike's scene for a while.

Really cool to see Laukli continue to dominate and open the door to becoming another American force for the women's trail scene.

First run tonight since the doc restarted my heart Thursday to get it into a normal rhythm. Hopefully it sticks, running with a heart that runs like it's going haywire is a total mind fuck - never mind it's simply not efficient, ha.

Stumbled upon a new trail today that will be my local go-to run this winter. Grandeur Peak foothills south to Pipeline, hell ya!!!!

    Wait, what? Yikes!

There's pretty much always been social trails that connected Grandeur-Pipeline, but I guess it's nice that it's formalized now.

Damn, chemical or electrical cardioversion? Each with its own set of fun (only witnessed, never participated).

There has been but they suck. Crestwood is the most obvious one and it's just another garbage social foothill trail of SLC. During winter it's north facing and too steep and eroded to be worthy. There is also Poop Chute, a trail I named on Strava about 10? years ago, where I'd hike-a-bike from the end of Pipeline up the ridge, then go down a skidder gully to Crestwood. I used to trim it but it's overgrown and deadly without spikes in winter. With spikes it's still annoying.

This new section of Bonneville is perfect for winter running - sustainable, will get lots of traffic so I won't be breaking trail, and parts will be in the sun which I like in winter. Fat bikers are gonna love getting to Pipeline this way too. We need some real trails in the foothills like this, not these steep unsustainable, multi-braided eyesores that are everywhere. And for bikers - it opens up a few things. You can access Pipeline without going up pavement in Millcreek. It extends the Crest descent by 800-ish vert (I can coast down to my house from the end via Parleys paved trail - fuck yeah). Early spring I can see people biking up it, going down Rattlesnake, going back up the new Rattlesnake (called BST rattlesnake I think?), then going back down to Grandeur. That's a good jog, too, i don't want to blow out my ACL on steep ice of crestwood. Also, don't get too excited as it's not mind-blowing but they have a few mini mini side jumps on this new part of BST and bermed switchbacks - clearly bikers are building it.

And I'm sure people will connect the new Parleys BST trail (that goes to Jacks trail and starts/ends at i80) to this via the pedestrain bridges over i-80 for more springtime early riding. Less than 10 minutes from my house. I'm a fan.

I’m a late convert to trail running in my early 40s, and ran my first marathon last year. Since training for that, I’d been dreaming about a one-day run from Harts Pass to Rainy Pass, a 30-mile stretch of the PCT in the North Cascades. Things drifted a bit over the spring, but training really came together this summer to finally make it happen on Saturday.

Two other friends joined for the whole run, with another helping run shuttle. We had a full mixed bag of fall weather, with temps in the 30s-40s, starting in thick fog and giving way to sun, light rain, hail, and lots of dramatic swirling clouds. The early fog hid the Harts Pass views, but the fall colors were spectacular with red heather and larches turning yellow. The whole landscape was stunning, with a lot of high ridge running and multiple passes. It was super cool to be up high and look back across 5-7 miles stretches of route behind us and whole basins ahead.

Total route was 30.5 miles with 4700’ of climbing, and 7.5 hrs run time. It was my longest run yet, though done in a pretty leisurely way with some hiking and lots of fuel breaks when weather cooperated. Overall, I felt great, learned lots of good lessons on how to go far with minimal gear, and a bit about the margins of pulling it all off.

Super pumped to have done it, and motivated to do some more stuff like this.

Lots of PCTers down in Mazama that were just wrapping up, but only a few on the trail. I think we only saw 5 or 6 people between miles 5-25, which added to the feeling of really being out there.

Awesome run and you have to love when a plan comes together. That looks like one I want to try. I have a buddy that did a single day Snoqualmie to Stevens and that's insane.

The one I'm working towards for hopefully next year is a 3 day Wonderland Trail. It's about 30mi a day for 3 days. Putting together the gear and crew for it.

I had one of those "this is what it's all about" runs near Mammoth last weekend. It's so amazing back there! This is the perfect loop: 13.5 mi, 3200' of climbing, 100% wilderness singletrack.

Now if I could just get my knee to stop bitching at around 11mi in...Name: 20230923_130829.jpeg
