I was replying to a post which stated how the episode was so different and the episodes are about climbing and skiing the 50, correct?

If you don't think that line is an awesome meadow skipping pow run, you clearly suck at skiing and should head back to AZ. And not the state, because RA is out there and he rips, so you won't be able to keep up.

Cody's video racked up 56k views in two days, and so far Wirth's has about 1k. So he's got a long way to go and needs every advantage he can get.

I even enjoy just hearing the noises of his boots and bindings while he's climbing along the drainage.
Keep in mind he has 31 episodes to run this year and Cody has probably less than 14.

I was also curious about any precautions taken given the considerable rating and the 35-40 degree slope. Of course, all we know is the overall rating and not the different problems for the day, but you obviously weren't too worried given the photographer waiting in the middle of the big face.

    The FIFTY

I’m excited to watch the 7 Steps episode, as I bailed on that line last winter due to wind scoured conditions (skied the neighboring Jupiter Traverse instead, which is equally badass imho).

Regarding the young gun, I was interested to watch Wirth’s video on the Comstock and found it entertaining, albeit not of the same caliber as the 50 Project.

He definitely made the descent look spicy, and did have some useful comments on snow stability / decision making… although I’m not convinced he’s actually taking his own safety advice.

I can honestly say that day tripping up to the Asulkan Hut, dropping the backside, touring to the next drainage, climbing that couloir, and coming back would be a monumental effort.

The question that should be asked about this effort is what if there was an accident, broken piece of gear, or lack of gps mapping in that area?

Answer: the train rolls off the tracks.

If people are going to get grumpy about ski content on YouTube, get annoyed at the other pros (https://youtu.be/idvv1uZFm08), (https://youtu.be/4CYf2k4ehK0) and wannabes (https://youtu.be/FlKwuDHUoTA) posting drone footage from wilderness not some video piggybacking. I appreciate Cody’s don't fly drones in wilderness messaging.

To Wirth’s credit, that continuous GoPro shot of skiing bluebird pow got me more fired up for the ski season than any other ski content I’ve consumed so far this year.

Cody used drones in Wilderness in the Giant Steps episode, see here (around the 7:55 mark) https://youtu.be/NrDCgtMoPaY?t=474

True, although I my mind doing it once and then making an effort to educate the masses is different from continuing to post drone in wilderness and not giving a fuck about it.

Also the TGR Ring of Fire series had a few wilderness peaks with drone shots. Don’t get me wrong, the footage is sweet, I just don’t want my favorite ski spots filled with drones from every ski YouTuber who figures out enforcement is very minimal.

I can't tell if your comments are criticizing me for saying this episode was different?

The skiing was fantastic, I didn't call it meadow skipping. This episode was so different because the focus was on Cody as a parent and husband, and that experience. Yes, they climbed and skied one of the Fifty, but the focus of this episode was completely different. At least to me.

I liked this episode. Been a while since I saw something I would consider "Paulster-doable."

Looked like a fantastic day in the mountains, which no doubt is made all-the-better by getting a break from a 6 month old. Been there (twice), and you really do appreciate those break times.

Really love this series. Could someone write a book with 100 summits and send to Cody because it would be a shame if a series like this was to end.

Yup. Fucked up on that one heavily. Read the maps wrong, thought it was fine and a NFS agent about two months later informed it was not fine. Didn’t end up getting fined because she said we were displaying overall good wilderness and backcountry ethics and if we could educate others about drones it would help her a ton. So started including that messaging in our series. We were following rules strictly before Giant Steps, just again, somehow read a map wrong and thought we were good. We were not.

Wirth is releasing weekly vs. Cody's bi-weekly so they will run on the same schedule.

Hell no. I was totally agreeing with you. His son, wifey (not her skiing, she obviously rips better than anyone in here!) and the whole vibe of parenthood. Maybe I added my take of the mellow pow line, but assumed you meant that also. Don't get me wrong either. I'd ski (well I'd probably snowboard) that line over and over and over again. It would be a blast!

So basically you either don’t understand what meadow skipping means or you just misspoke and are now doubling down on it. Cool, cool.

It’s possibly y’all are parsing jackstraw’s post a little too much. I took it as a slightly hyperbolic distinction between the lines like Comstock vs something in the skill set of my middle-aged, middle school teacher ass.

Yes it was steep in sections, but it was a mortal-level ski tour. It would be a line to remember for me, but I could probably make that memory.

Huh. I thought the meadow skipping comment was OK. I thought by TRG standards that WAS meadow skipping. Not like that’s a bad thing…whatever.

Internet expression is not easy. You’d all get along irl. Nobody is trying to be too cool, in fact the opposite. Snow will fall soon and you’ll all be happier
In the meantime enjoy the ski videos. we certainly have [emoji1]

After watching the other dudes comstock vid, I’m curious how it ended up on the 50 classic list. Seems pretty random to me and was only included as an ego stroke for hill imho since it doesn’t get skied. Seven steps on the other hand looks fun as shit and qualifies due to the fact it is prolly one of the most skied lines in a classic zone. Cody and crew scored and made me want to ski it some day…….party shredding bluebird blower bliss for the win

Very good point. Its hard to call a line a classic when the only people who seem to care about skiing it are the ones trying to cover the whole list, and no one skis it for the inherent value of doing it for its own sake.

According to that criteria Mt St Elias should be off the list. Fact is the list is totally arbitrary and was made as a coffee table book. I’d guess that book sales have greatly increased since Cody started this adventure.

50 classic ski descents follows the convention of 50 classic climbs which is a mix of the trade routes and the unrepeated. Comstock follows the trend of the Hummingbird Ridge and some other stuff in the OG climbing book. Much angst has been spent on that topic since the publication of both.

    See the Patriarch Line.

Fact is, this is an inspiring series meant to fuel the stoke.

Come up with your own classic lines. Make your own list. Generate your own criteria.

If it ain’t fun, you’re doing it wrong!
