One bike on a Kuat tray rack behind my small car (Lexus IS) would drop MPG from around 25 hwy, down to around 23. Two bikes back there dropped it to around 20... was like a parachute.

It was -3 for 1 bike and -5 for 2 on my BRZ. My Durango didn't care and neither does the RR, they both run around 16 no matter what. Big suv's aren't as affected.

That is rad. I’m curious to hear what your real world range is in winter - especially if you add a roof box and winter tires.

Was there an F150 Lightning thread? Or was the discussion wrapped up in another thread? Seemed to be the consensus that using it as a backup power source for your home was a super cool feature.

Saw this today on that subject. This guy is always has some interesting takes on things.

So far I don't have a great read on range as we haven't driven enough to know yet. I drove 100 hilly miles at 70 mph in 5F temps and blowing snow, and range was down a bit more than 20%. I thought that was actually pretty good for the conditions. Hypermiling around town I can get range up way beyond the EPA's 274 estimate, but the real concern is long distance over passes in cold weather for ski trips. Haven't tried that yet.

I think as spring seems to mostly be here we'll wait until next year for the winter tires. We've decided against a roof box to maximize our range and are looking at a hitch mounted rack that we can take off when we don't need it. The Yakima EXO system looks good but $$. Ideally we could leave the base on the car and add ski or bike carriers as needed. Anybody have any experience with this system?

British Columbia dropped PST (7% tax) on electric vehicles. The Ionic 5 I ordered last month just got about $3500 cheaper.

Awesome! The Ioniq 5 looks great, too! Let us know how you like it when you get it.

As in, a hitch mounted ski rack or cargo box?

I’m interested in any feedback you have on that car, because my father in law is looking to get an EV. He drives in southern Maine with cold weather, ice/snow, and lots of flat and rolling terrain. It seems like the EV6 with heat pump would maintain decent winter range. I recommended he check out this one and the Ford Mustang Mach-E thing. Despite the weird naming it seems like it could be a good all season EV.

Belongs in the Shit That Makes You Say Fuck Yeah (or whatever it’s called) thread.

Good vid thx. It turns out Ford just announced a $1300 bidirectional home / car charger. Makes that $4k wallbox look overpriced. I could buy an AWD bev with modest battery size and power our house for 5 days easily. And if I avoided depleting it, could drive to a town nearby with power and recharge and drive it back home. Pretty cool.

For the neckers out there, this technology looks rad. I'll also be happy when all the SxS crew are rocking these.

Well, got an official email from Ford this week that all model year 2022 orders have been placed, so order invites are now on pause for all other reservations. It sounds like 2023 order invitations may start going out to reservation holders later this summer. Not surprised given the low first year production numbers, and maybe now I’ll get to see some more real world numbers and reviews before having to decide on whether to fully commit on our reservation.

Anecdotal but I recently met with an old client who bought one for a work truck. He was disappointed with real world range as he was only averaging about 200 miles. Where he needed to go, there is not much charging infrastructure and he found himself having to travel out of his way, spend forever charging up all the way, go to location, get back to that charger, charge back up before heading back home. He put up with it for a bit before trading it in for an F-150 Hybrid. That doesn't have very impressive mpg either in all honesty. He sees low 20s. But at least he can get out to the field and back no problem without adding hours to the trip logistically. He can squeeze over 600-700 miles out of that one. Must have a big ass gas tank tho.

That said, I believe the Lightning has options for bigger batteries which would help the range issue. Still won't be enough for some but def more useable. For many local, around town work trucks, 200 miles will still be fine. All depends on your use case I suppose.

Personally I'd buy low profile aero roof box for skis or put them inside and use a normal 2 tray bike hitch. You will get better mileage with your skis near your rear wheels, sure, but it seems weird. They will get a ton of road junk on them too, or is there a cover for them?

If you use the EXO to it's full capacity (use both upper and lower 'racks') anything on the upper part of the rack will get you horrible mileage. And putting your bikes on the upper tier seems like a no-go for long trips, it will be a big drag for you (pun intended).

How does he already have Lightning Pro? I didn't think any had exited production to customers yet. As best as I'd seen, a number of early Pro orders aren't even scheduled for production until May, unless I missed something. Even so, that version only has the standard range at 230 mile - for our family needs, I'd likely be bumping up to the extended range of 300.

That ICE Hybrid version can be had with the 36 gallon fuel tank, which must be how he's getting that distance. Of course, around here that'd cost $160-180 to fill up.

Yeah. Was probably not the "Pro" version since dude likes his trucks decked out. Got his F-150 hybrid in King Ranch flavor. And yowch! That capacity gas tank would be painful to fill too! Too bad it doesn't do closer to 30mpg like even the Ram "eco"diesel does. New ones rated at an optimistic 32 supposedly.?

That first sentence/paragraph should be the point for most...

My Lightning reservation was too low on the list to get a truck this year... kinda bummed, but it'll also be the most expensive vehicle purchase I've made, so I can save a bit more until then.

This... I haven't seen any production trucks delivered yet.... Hell, Rivian has a 6 month jump and there are only a handful out there.... (I've seen them in the wild here.. I kinda dig them).
