It's plastic/composite of some kind; new grill style compared to the metal ones they used previously.

Slightly different hood shape and new LED headlights, but otherwise the same chassis/body as my Thomas diesels

So... Electric vehicle. Hopefully some enterprising kids don't decide they want a day off and unplug them. My kids had a day off when they were in k-8 because some kids got some older brothers to unplug the diesel buses one night during a cold snap. You've been warned.

Musta been some older buses or real real cold? The newer diesels do a phenomenal job with cold starts. I've started a Thomas (cummins B6.7) in -10 to -20F; it's not happy but they crank. Now the older buses with 7.3's... no bueno.

Cadillac is bringing back non-alphanumeric names for its vehicles, starting with the upcoming Lyriq and yet-to-be-unveiled Celestiq. By the time the brand is fully electric in 2030, names like CT6 and XT4 will have disappeared, replaced by the likes of "Vistiq" and "Lumistiq," as CarBuzz reports.

According to trademark filings, the company may use those names for upcoming vehicles, including the "IQL" moniker ahead of the Escalade's name when that truck goes electric. This is consistent with the company's plans to affix "iq" at the end of all of its new nameplates. It's worth noting that, when this actually takes place, it will be pronounced "ick," not "ique." Lyriq is reportedly pronounced "Lyric" and Celestiq "Celestic."

Sounds like 711 is making a big push to put DCFC charging stations at their stores. 250 stores by end of 2022. Seems like a no-brainer business move. They are going to sell a shit load of weenie roller dogs and nachos…

I’ve been waiting to see one of the major gas station chains to make the same move but it doesn’t seem like any of them are being as aggressive…

I did an electrical design for a gas station near Nelson a few years ago. During design i asked them repeatedly if they wanted provision for car charging but nope they said they were a fuel station. I ended up calculating a 400A 120/208 3 ph service for them. I heard recently they asked an electrical engineer what it would take to add car charging. Morons coulda done it for about 25% of what it'll cost now.

Just drove my Bolt EUV from Boise to SLC and back. First takeaway is that 50kw fast charging is not fast enough. Second takeaway is that fast charge stations should really have some amenities to hang out at. I’d pay money to have something to do, other than sit in my car next to a corn field outside Burley, ID.

As someone who lives in between the Bay and Tahoe I’m really intrigued by this idea. It’s like you need the business model of a truck stop but for desires and tastes of the 5%. Food, coffee (maybe in a co-op style) with a play area for kids of different ages.

I don’t know if it is a core business yet. More like an add on to an existing customer service oriented business. Maybe a way to monetize parking lots that are located by a concentration of businesses / small downtowns. And will it also be made extinct soon when cars get 500+ miles a charge.

I guess it also depends on just WHEN cars get a 500+ mile charge, and whether the better range, or possibly faster charging times, make the stops somewhat obsolete.

I honestly don't know just when that will happen. At this point it makes good sense to have shopping and quick food available. In the future that might not be the case so much.

The casino thing is interesting.

On the way to Mammoth I always used to stop at Fort Independence. It is in the second of the four towns (Lone Pine, Independence, Big Pine and Bishop) that you hit during the last stretch of the drive to Mammoth. I don't hit that spot anymore, as it does not have a charger, but I would imagine getting people into the casino for 20-40 minutes of slots might make sense. You are not going to get people for hours and hours, but you might make an extra 20-100 bucks off people who stop to charge.

That casino always looked horrible to me. I could smell the cigarette smoke whenever I would go into the convenience store to use the restroom or buy something to drink. Now that I almost never smell cigarette smoke I really can't stand it.

There is a dispensary right there. If they had a few Tesla chargers I would definitely check it out. You could grab something at the convenience store and maybe some edibles as well. There are chargers about 20 minutes south, in Lone Pine, and about about 40 minutes north, in Bishop. I've never had issues getting a charger at either of those places, so Independence might not be all that necessary as far as alleviating an overused set of chargers. It would probably make more sense to put one in Coso Junction or somewhere like that, right between the ones in Mojave and the Lone Pine chargers.

There is a cafe at Fort Independence, but I've never tried it. If they had decent bagels it would actually be a good spot to stop and grab one while charging. I usually hit the Independence area around 8 or 830 am, so it would be an ideal place to grab something and charge.

I think this is it. Improvements in design and tech are coming fast and furious, (like the new cooling design for the charging cord).
I’d like the 500+ mile range, (in any weather), batteries to be here now, but it won’t be long.

That makes Porsche’s and Mercedes’ NA headquarters in town and now Rivian’s biggest facility.

Add that to BMW and Volvo just across the border in SC, Hyundai and Kia in Southern GA, and I’d say this region is the new “motor city”.
