Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Continuing to watch/observe. We’re slowly planning a home remodel/addition that will include a 200A box and charger infrastructure as part of preparing for owning all electric vehicles. The 16 yo is starting to pressure for help buying an e bike for getting to school and navigating close excursions on steep dirt roads. I look forward to replacing my land cruiser with a comparable e-thing.

Getting to frorider’s comment upthread, can somebody please summarize the possibility/charging scenario of driving from South Lake Tahoe to somewhere with long dirt roads, like saline valley campground (Death Valley NP) and back in a rivian or other higher clearance awd e-car/truck? Is it even possible? Desert adventures, IME, often involve long distances driving on dirt/gravel/sandy roads.

I've been after a plug in hybrid SUV to solve the backcountry range issue for a while now. I also do not like the idea of building in extra time on longer trips- I drive fast for a reason. I guess it was me and a zillion other people- you can't touch the RAV4 Prime without paying ridiculous markups if you can even find one. Huyndai and Kia have some decent looking options but still issues with supply. May buy an older Mitsubishi plug in to hold me over.

Ha That's exactly what I did. They were asking $10K over MSRP for the RAV4 Prime last June ... ended up getting a 2018 Outlander plug-in at CarMax instead. Working out good for my purposes.

I’ve started looking at the XC90 plug-in with extended range but I don’t really want to pay $65k for a car…

We have a leaf and I just had to replace our Audi tdi after I managed to total it. I looked at going electric but awd plus some towing and long range put me into silly expensive territory and cars with long wait lists. I would be happy to trade the Honda Pilot we bought for a few rivian r1s but not for 90k and a 2 year wait. I’m interested to see the bigger Kia and Hyundai when they come out.

I bought a ‘21 Corolla for $20k last Dec as a commuter; it gets around 41mpg. I drive about 350 miles per week to get to work. At ~ $5/gal, that’s $43/week in gas. $172/month. Ish. Plus oil changes, etc.

We just installed EV chargers at work, and I’m considering trading the Corolla for a cheap EV, and getting it charged for free, plus low maintenance. Does this pencil?

Only if getting a cheap EV is actually an option.

My wife traded her '20 Rav4 TRD-OR gasser in for a '21 Rav4 hybrid. So much better of a car. It is faster, (she got pulled over and got off with a warning no more than 10 mins after leaving the dealer, haha).
~16 more HP in the hybrid and very little lag compared to the regular Rav4.
I doubt the gas savings really pencil out any time soon but she's much happier with the hybrid because of the increased speed and she does commute quite a bit for work.

It'll be a while before EV really makes sense for us. Commuting over mountain passes in the winter in really cold temps just increases the necessity for being able to rely on the vehicle to keep you warm if you get stuck etc.

The prices right now are still pretty high. A dealership about an hour away has a couple F-150 Lightnings, but MSRP is $93k because they are taking the Tesla approach and starting high. Too bad the Gladiator 4xe might be a couple years out, that is starting to look like a great option for our requirements.

Huh, I didn't know that was an option. I need to start searching by fuel type more often.

22 mile range then 34mpg it looks like. I wish that either range or mpg were a bit better.

I think it would pencil at saving $150+/mo if you sell the Corolla and get a used 2016-newer Leaf with the longer range battery for under $20k. Charging for free: you're golden! https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-...ngId=648917942

You could probably find a cheap 1st gen Nissan Leaf. The range on those is really quite limited, but your use case probably would work out.

You are actually making a good point. If we got rid of the Maserati it could fund the webzine I have always wanted to start comparing strip joints across the country. She would love to contribute to that!

I have a Silverado 1500 diesel. Pushes 30 mpg on the highway. Just rolled on vacation to Maine with four in it, 5 surfboards, 2 paddleboards, 2 boogie boards, 2 bikes, beach chairs, all other crap for ten days. Probably got 25 mpg with the two paddleboards on the roof rack. EV isn’t going to work for me I don’t think. Paid $48k new for LTZ 4wd for a ‘22.

We EV owners all go on road trips like that and we bring the bigger gas car/van/truck and leave the electric car at home. Electric cars are great for other things. Two car households can have the best of both worlds.

The only thing I have had to do on the Tesla I got two years ago is fill the wiper fluid and rotate the tires.

The Maserati cost roughly 20k more than the Tesla.

The Tesla is much faster and more fun to drive. I don't even really like driving the Maserati all that much anymore. Granted, it is a Ghibli, which is very low end for Maserati, but the Tesla is an AWD long-range model 3, which is about the lowest performance Tesla out there.

The Tesla is a model 3, and I don't love the hatchback look. The Maserati definitely looks nicer, so it does have that going for it, although without the hatchback it would be close.

My BIL got the chance to test drive a Ford Lighting this past weekend. It was the first one that came into a dealership in Delaware. He said it was an amazing experience. I'm not sure what model he drove, but I'm guessing it was the high end version.

This. ICE vehicles still have their place, but EVs are massively better at the daily driving that most people do the other 355 days of the year that they're not doing road tripping vacations loaded down with stuff.

Bigger question is did he use it to go casapulla or capriottis?
