Meanwhile in Kyiv, the Russkies are shelling Taras Shevchenko National University and Kyiv International University and Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic and National University of Life and Environmental Sciences and the National Aviation University...

Right or wrong has little to do with the reality of things. If we cut off Russian oil without a replacement the entire world could very well lapse into a depression worse than 1929.

But the broader reason is that Western nations, and particularly the Biden administration, are attempting to find a careful balance between punishing Putin and avoiding serious economic and political blowback back home.

A cutoff of Russia’s energy industry would impose severe consequences for U.S. allies in Europe, at least in the near term, and for Americans as well.

The disruption of global energy markets and the subsequent surge in oil and gas prices would likely add to inflation that’s already at a 40-year high. And government efforts to fight the new burst of inflation would risk triggering a recession on the eve of the U.S. midterm elections.

Although the U.S. is largely energy independent — it’s the world’s largest producer of oil and liquefied natural gas — crude oil prices are set in a global market.

^^^ Free-dumb covoy was by here yesterday and there were lifted monster trucks and several hundred "supporters" waving flags and holding up signs. As I drove past I rolled down my window and gave them a great big "FUCK YOU!".

They interviewed some of the supporters who said this was all about my body, my choice. I was hoping the reporter would ask about a woman's right to those things. She didn't. Such a softball.

Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Right on cue, Facebook is starting to flood with people complaining about gas prices rising.
Trying to explain why to people who just want to yell about Biden, is frustrating.

Just saw a video of Ukraine's President begging for Nato/whoever to close air traffic/no fly zone.
Why can't the world do this? Putin going to start launching nukes? Fuck that cunt. His bluff needs to be called.

Believe me I wish that was a viable option. A no-fly zone would only lead to further escalation. The last thing the world needs right now is NATO shooting down a Russian fighter jet.

Exactly. Brodozers and big ass SUVs still being sold in record numbers. So long as that keeps happening, we apparently have plenty of wiggle room in the market to allow us to squeeze Russia to the maximum extent.

I agree. Ukraine's a sovereign country last I checked and if they wanna call it a no fly zone, then they have every right to blow every Russian intruder out of the sky, and can certainly ask for support from whomever they want. Russia fired the first shots. Geneva Convention rules say it's game on then.

With the EU's and US's superior air power, Russia wouldn't stand a chance in Ukrainian air space.

If Putin wants to nuke someone for defending themselves stemming from HIS violations, then WE have the right to nuke Moscow back. He knows that. Thus he won't. Mutually assured destruction has its benefits.

The scary thing of this isn’t “Putin has nukes”, it’s “what shape are putins nukes in?”

Right now the Russians have surrounded a property with 4 nuke plants and do not have control of it.

What could go wrong with nuclear power?

And NOT having a no-fly zone has prevented said "further escalation?" Literally every soft measure that's been approached so far has lead to ...wait for it... further escalation.

Don't forget who we're dealing with here, folks. It was Vladimir Lenin that famously said "You probe with bayonets. If you find mush, you push. If you find steel, you withdraw."

Putin will ONLY respond to steel. He's looking for mush, hoping he can meet his goals here. What's it gonna be? I think no-fly zone and shoot all intruders down. Not that hard a concept really. Would WE stand for anything less if a foreign country was invading the US?

I have a real problem with this. So the EU/NATO are just going to allow this to happen because Ukraine wasn't in their club yet? Unbelievable.

Remember when Saddam set Kuwait on fire and they made that iMax movie about it and Boots & Coots made $4 billion dollars putting it out?

Bruce Willis and Sam Elliot should start a hot shot nuclear remediation team made of loveable goofballs who always get'er dun!

Right now the Russians aren't really in the air. If they aren't going to leverage their 4000+ jet advantage, I think it's worth waiting it out for a bit even if it's awful to watch. A military expert or former ambassador was on the Terry Gross show today - link not available yet - he said that Ukrainian pilots had trained on the A10 and that our planes are mothballed right now on the way to being decommissioned. That could just be beating the drum for war, who knows, but I'd rather they were out there blowing up all the roads to Kyiv rather than setting around doing nothing. Ryssa flew against us in vietnam, if any ex-pilots want to fly in Ukrainian colors that's fine too.

The gulf states are also coming down harder on Putler now btw - abstentions have flipped to condemnations.

If he will only accept a military victory before leaving he should reconsider what a boot up the ass might feel like.

What do you mean, "allow" it? It looks to me like RUS is flexing it's muscles and the EU/NATO are responding with a level of response they think they can get away with. The alternative is a land war in Europe? How many people get killed in that, even if it stays non-nuclear? Thousands? Hundreds of thousands?

I can't believe people can't connect a NATO/EU No Fly Zone to likely resulting in the No Fly Forces being targeted by and destroying RUS air defenses (some of which are sitting in RUS) leading very quickly to a escalation. Not an escalation in the Ukraine - RUS war, but a escalation in military engagement between RUS and NATO. Which leads to the US and RUS directly engaged in military conflict, which basically every expert agrees is a very bad thing.
