Also consider that the exclusion zone is an uninhabited area, it makes a wonderful guerrilla-free staging zone with which to set up for a drive into Kiev.

I am confused about why Pres Zelensky didn’t act sooner to call up reserves and take defensive measures before the invasion. He had a perfect chance for a “fight them on the beaches” moment and ask Ukrainians to dig tank ditches and have the armed forces wire explosives to bridges and prepare to mine border crossings in the days leading up to the invasion.

If he was wrong about the invasion he could have claimed their efforts deterred Russia from invading. If Russia invaded anyway they would have at least put up a bit more resistance than they’re doing now.
He was an actor before running for office.

He’s not happy with Biden. Guy was running his mouth last week that they trusted their own intelligence first.

I am baffled as to what their defense are doing but hopefully that means they have one.

UK and US intelligence nailed it, and Biden stuck his neck out to raise the alarm. If Putin did not invade Biden would have been blamed for all kinds of nonsense. And Zelensky complained about Biden fear mongerinf and creating a panic.

Know they’d do anything right now to suck us in. As would anyone in their position being hung out to dry. Sad.

Fuck Putin. Fuck Lenin, Fuck Stalin.
Had the exact same thoughts. It's a pretty significant part of the two countries history.

    Ukraine

Sobering to watch TV with my Mom today. She said today reminds her of her first week as a HS freshman, her history teacher came out from behind his desk, and spoke to the class directly about the events of the past week. He spoke about how the day before Germany had attacked Poland. He spoke about how these are just two countries far away from us, he feared that it would start a chain of events that would ensnare the young teenagers in this classroom. My mom was sitting in the front row, and she could see the teachers hand shaking. Also in the classroom that day was a skinny boy whose parents had just moved to town a few weeks earlier. That skinny kid would end up fighting in heavy combat against the Nazi’s, and then he became my father.

Mom was very emotional today. She says today feels just like that day.

It’s a secure chat client. Western banks do business in Russia and still need to communicate. It doesn’t mean a specific institution can transact.

It's much more than that, as far as I understand (and I'm not an expert). It's like mega PayPal, basically, but even more official/secure/trusted and there's not a Venmo in that space.

Piece by Krugman in NYT today. Laundered Russian money in the West amounts to 80% of Russia's GDP. Seizing those assets are the strongest weapon the West has. The trouble is, too many other powerful people are hiding assets in the same places and are likely collateral damage. The question is whether govts are willing to deal with the fallout from that.

The success of sanctions will largely depend on whether Western consumers are willing to tolerate higher energy prices and other significant impacts, or when push comes to shove is our prosperity more important than our belief in democracy and a lawful international order. And it will depend on how the Russian people deal with the impacts on them.
I wonder how the average Russian--not just the ones Western media select--feels about Russian international power and prestige vs maintaining a comfortable life.

In that case, democracy is fucked. People driving $50-80k vehicles are OUTRAGED that they have to spend $100 to fill their tank.

As a guy in the energy business, don't even get me started on that topic. People in the domestic E&P trade are PISSED right now. It's going down EXACTLY as they've been saying it would, but nobody wanted to listen as per usual.

They likely can afford $5 gasoline. It's the people driving a $20k car working 2 blue collar jobs that can't, dummy.

Looks like they're starting to blow bridges. You would think the road blocks and infrastructure destruction would have started yesterday. Especially the airports, as it's safe to assume no Ukrainian aircraft escapes the net.

Sadly, the pro-oligarchy wing of Republican voters is providing, by all reports, a convenient excuse for various EU players to resist broad sanction commitments. ‘Why take the economic hit when there’s a decent chance you guys will elect a Trump in a couple of years who will reverse everything?’

I suspect our federal gas tax will be suspended at some point soon to mitigate costs at the pump and keep public support of sanctions.
