When I was young (and obviously naive) I can remember taking this wide plastic ruler to school every day with all of the presidents on it. It had facts about their birthplace, party, birth / death dates, and a portrait. It was at the end of Reagan's presidency, and there were two rows of 20. I remember looking at the pictures, memorizing facts about them, wondering where tf monticello was, how some people were elected twice, whatever. At that point as a kid I obviously saw America as an unequivocal good in the world, and that these presidents were to be admired - regardless of political affiliation they were playing for Team America. Obviously you live and learn that there is a bit more nuance, and some are better than others, but it held true through HW and Clinton, warts (genital? lol) and all - Team America.
W through a wrench in my beliefs because he was dumb, full stop. Partisanship ruled the day since him, and things only got worse when we ended up with a narcissistic criminal in 2016.
Now Biden is here, and yeah, he is old, but despite the gaffes he's had (which are career long), I was hoping for a return to some of the normalcy in the team thing I saw as a kid. Instead, I come here and see complaints about his old looks, the way he walks, and low info talking points, instead of anything substantive about policy. When Putin and Xi talk about America as a failing power, this is it. It's like half the country stores their brains in a tanning booth every night. Maybe instead of elections we should just replace the process with a season of The Bachelor?
Here's a story that begins with him talking about his stutter from 2008, it did not take long to find:
