With the Covid shutdown of my gym and more importantly the pool, I have been more rowing this past year. I try to row 5 days a week, but 5k is about my max and I prefer 2 sets of 2k with some weights in between them. Crazy how quick I can get a work out in and feel better rest of the day

I hadn't been on the rower for at least a year but a coworker of mine had been bragging about his 1k time of 3:38. I had no idea what I used to do a 1k in, but of course I told him I could beat that. I go down to the gym to make sure, warm up, and then set out for my 1k row. I made it in 3:35 and then damn near passed out trying to loosen the foot straps. Room spinning, wheezing, burned lungs, blood taste in mouth all out effort. Holy shit that thing is a torture device.

I have not used my rower in about 2 years, as my shoulders healed. Now that my shoulders feel 100% again I am honestly afraid to work out and fuck them up again. Any suggestions other than to start slow and easy?
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Stick to a shoulder health program. No/light weights and banded stuff. Stick to it like a religion.

So only do it if someone gets married or dies? Got it.

Why? I thought < 1:30 for a 500m was sort of a standard good time...but not really a good time for the reasons zzz pointed out. So 3:30 for a 1k seems commensurate on the brutal scale.

Yeah, ötzi's high. A good time for 2k is like seven minutes.

Here's a workout I just wrote down maybe I'll try for my next row since lately I've really only done steady state stuff.

    500 m warmup
    500 m build, last 100 m should be fast
    500 m easy
    1000 m strong
    1 minute easy
    750 strong
    1 minute easy
    500 strong
    1 minute easy
    250 blast, AFAP
    1 min easy
    500 build
    500 easy

This can be done in under 30 minutes. Idea is to establish a good pace on the 1000 and then try to lower that pace as the distance decreases, with the final 250 blast being max effort.

FWIW, I think rowing a 7 minute 2k is way harder than say, running a 6 minute mile for average height/weights.

Could not agree more... I am a regular runner and workout with a couple of diff trainers and consider myself in shape... Joined a gym that had rowers and became addicted quickly... After months of using them my personal best for 2k was 6:13... When I pulled that pace and finished the row I could not get up fast enough to catch my breath... No doubt I am winded when running a 6 minute mile but no where as winded when I finished that row... Still addicted to it and am trying to get to 6 min...

Well, 6:13 is a whole lot faster than 7:00.

Was your 2k on concept 2? As I understand it other rowers don't compare 1:1. A 6:13 2k is crazy fast on a concept 2. That would put you on page 2 out of 195 for all the verified male times last year. A 6:48.8 is the cutoff for 90th percentile. https://log.concept2.com/rankings

Congrats and godspeed on your journey to a sub 7min 2k.

Huh the shoulder one looks like a TRX but with elastic, that's interesting. I might buy the hip/core one in a minute here, it's cheap enough and I need something more than what I'm doing.

Checked my emails and the code "21OFF" still works for 21% off and free shipping over $75.

I wondered this too. Also, on what resistance setting?

I know I'm feeble, but dang you guys are talking about good times. I usually mentally stick to like 2:15/500's and go for 8-10k with a podcast on. I can't plug into anything aggressive, just not that inspired on the rower.
I want to be, I'm just not.

My goal is to get back to sub 7min on 2K. Best ever was a 6:40, but that was awhile ago. I hit 7:05 last year, so just need to step it up a bit this year. Lungs haven't been the same since I had the Rona.
