I was regretting not taking and sharing photos of the view from Twilight Bowl on Sunday. Big controlled slides, but about half of the bombed locations didn’t break free, so I (foolishly) assumed they’d be waiting at least a week before opening the gates.

Snow seemed pretty okay at Bachelor this morning. The lift lines on the other hand...well they sucked. Pine shut down around 10:30 or so. I opted to hit Red instead. Glad I did for one last glorious lap before call of duty called...

Hopefully this pic is right side up. py iPhone 6 photo. But the snow was on the heavier creamy side of things. Still good for the 4 runs I was able to get in. I should have done one more run on Outback but that was a fun one down Boomerang first thing. The 4" overnight skied like 6", so I had that going for me.

props to TBS for the 6am tip. Was able to score a coveted reservations with what felt like a thousand other like minded people.

I’m a snowflake vegetarian libtard ... I won’t blame one storm flipping at the last second from forecasted right side up to exiting upside down on a warming climate - we do live on the west coast - but irregardless of cause or patterns ...
My 118 skis didn’t fare so well after 930 today between the wind formed heavy cement and all the Bachelor pow shredder overflow crowd mobbing the Doo today. By the way my car says it’s 38F in the lot right now and anything falling on me or my car is instamelting ...

Switching to my 106 skis and going back brave more lift line junkshow now ...

It was pretty nice on the far east side of MtB today - seven good laps with 3-4” of creamy wind pack blown in from everywhere else on the mountain.
Once you descended maybe 200’ the sun was shining.
And the wind was running down the hill providing refills.
And no lines

Until 1030

Then there was a 20 minute wait for a 30 min ride up CCX - including a 10 min halt just uphill of the getback - with 50 mph winds in your face. And we were told to go play somewhere else because the lift was joining Sky, PMX and NWX on wind hold.

So I said fuck it, I’m not skiing any more until next year

They opened Heather again today.
We get to the bottom of Absolute Magnitude and a lady had fallen into a creek. It looked like she went wide over the snow bridge and it collapsed. She was still clicked in to her skis which were uphill of her. No cell service & no lift running yet. It looked like her family was there with her. One guy asked us to go get patrol, so I jetted down the runout to the HRM lot and found a patroller there to radio up and get someone to her. It turned out my buddy stuck around to see if he could help in any way and managed to get her righted & she climbed out. Her entire lower half was soaked. Hopefully, patrol got there to assist. There was someone at the Ab Mag gate when we entered so hopefully they came down.

Lift lines was pretty atrocious to start, but thinned out towards noon

I'm actually appalled that they opened Heather terrain today after the avalanche and burial yesterday. They didn't even mention the avalanche on their blog today. A few years ago, I fell head first into a creek at the bottom of elk/yoda when I skied over a depression traversing to the take out and it just collapsed. My skis didn't come off and the hole was small enough so that my skis kept me from hitting the water. Took what seemed like a loooong time before other people heard my yelling and found me and helped me out. IMO, PR was too bony to have been opened that day.

Happy New Years Northernly folk!

I'm getting ready to jump into Bachelor for the first time soon. Have 5 days booked in the RV lot. This was an impulse trip, I know nothing about Bachelor and have never been north of Shasta. I've got some good friends in Eugene to give me a BC tour, but have some questions about the resort. They are pretty much strictly touring nowadays. If there's a JONG guide somewhere online that would suffice.

Anywhere to avoid? (e.g if you go down this run you'll end up on a cat track to a lift that always has long lines). I assume weekday crowds won't be horrible, is that correct? Any must hit terrain? (no need to give up stashes, just send me where you send the tourists) Any tips for the RV lot? I'll be in a truck, not an RV. Should I expect my tires to get slashed with CA plates ? Normally I'd ask about food/drink but the plan is to bring everything I need.

For reference I've been a Squaw/Alpine skier the past 2 years but before that lived out east and skied Whiteface, NY.

the current runout isn’t really fully formed yet either; i had to backtrack after following tracks to a creeked out dead end; not far but not marked either

Patrol does the work, evaluates, makes the call. Calling out management is a little absurd, you know the risks. Just because the rope drops doesn't mean clear sailing.

A truck or a truck camper? I thought the former was a no-go.

Favor looker's right or backside (probably find a buddy for that?) on good snow days. Avoid going too far looker's left to avoid a relatively low angle cat track. The looker's right cat track is much zippier.

I don't know shit about shit when it comes to doing control work, but I was stunned they opened HC as early as they did and even more stunned they opened it again without saying a word of warning regarding the incident. That's an uncommonly big dumb place for a big dangerous slide. Should have been grounds for a courtesy heads up, if not an outright evaluation of wtf went wrong with control work (I realize it could have been an honest mistake or a freak coincidence, but still, it's far enough out of the ordinary to say something). It could have been as simple as "heads up: there was a big slide on half moon yesterday. Be sure to ski with a buddy, and bring your shovels/beacons/probes if you have them."

No, sadly. We spent all day scrambling to get ready for our first trip of the year... Night skiing on NYE and rainy groomers in the morning, but by the time we were ready to leave, traffic was shitty and we were gassed. But at least now we're ready to roll next time.

You don't think there's any pressure from management to open Heather ASAP? Just curious, really, not being aggressive.

I have never, ever seen or heard of heather opening, (since the chair went in) before the chair could run.

Maybe opening without the chair hopefully weeds out those that shouldn't be there...

But the biggest issue I have is, info/education about conditions. If it wasn't for this site, I'd have no idea there was a slide, and since I ski solo most of the time, knowing of a slide would be hudge in deciding on skiing Heather or not

Too many armchair qb’s here… just do whatever you feel is right for you according to your own risk tolerance level and quit calling out what others shouda coulda be doing. At the end, it’s your decision and yours alone.

Total JONG question ... when the lift is closed to that area and the terrain is “opened,” is it technically a backcountry access gate or is it inbounds patrolled terrain?

Regardless of either, the resort is under no obligation to inform guests of the previous day’s instability observations.

Heather chair is a relatively new lift in the grand scheme of things. Historically opening of Heather Canyon has been determined by the snow for the run out.
