Sometimes you have to poke things with a stick to see if they’re dead or just sleeping.
I still call it The Jake.

I found this on the second page and it still makes sense to me. I’d go so far as to say you can use 287 from the NJ border all the way to 95 and CT. That recognizes the very large differences between southern Westchester (Yonkers, Mount Vernon, Scarsdale) and northern Westchester (Peekskill, Yorktown, Bedford). It actually works in Rockland County too. South of 287 is Pearl River which is full of displaced Bronx residents and Irish immigrants and north of 287 is Stony Point, which feels somewhat upstate, and Harriman/Bear Mountain SP where you find defunct ski areas and rattlesnakes.

Nope. Thousands and thousands commute to the city daily many stops above White Plains. I would argue that White Plains, since it's an express stop to Grand Central, is the top of NYC. I lived in Bronxville, a few stops below WP, and I got into the city faster than many Queens and Brooklyn residents.

I still think it's where the suicide rates ramp up steeply.

    Life wisdom right there.

Saved me from calling the cops to report a death, when it was just a sleepy drunk
    Kill all the telemarkers
But they’ll put us in jail if we kill all the telemarkers
    Telemarketers! Kill the telemarketers!
Oh we can do that. We don’t even need a reason

I reject your standard because you can get on a Metro North in Orange or Dutchess Counties. People commute to the city from Port Jervis, Poughkeepsie and Beacon. They seem decisively upstate to me.

That’s so upstate. In the city it’s considered rude to disturb people sleeping on the sidewalk.

Fair point. But in my defense, the drunk was in northern Illinois.
Fell asleep, back arched over a pile of 2x4s. I swore he had to be dead. But apparently just dead drunk.

You don’t poke city drunks with a stick. Ever.

I'm like 287 as a dividing line. Anytime I head north through there I feel closer to being home in Vermont. I know the worst of the drive is behind me.

I reject commuting range as the criteria. There are people that commute from the Albany area. It's a special kind of crazy that does that and it's definitely an upstate kind of crazy.

See post #4. I stand by it. Upstate is beyond reasonable commuting distance to Manhattan. So, you prove my point.

Politicians driving up and down the thruway are not "commuting". They don't do it every day.

This is true, but I would advise against poking pretty much anything upstate with a stick. Especially people.

You know how they say everything in the outback can hurt you no matter how beautiful it looks? That’s pretty much the entire human population upstate. Well, except for the everything is beautiful part.

I commuted from Peekskill to the Bronx every day for 4 years. I wouldn't say I was upstate, but everyone else I went to school with did.

    The answer, always, is pizza.

Just did a ton of driving yesterday up in the Catskills going to Hunter, getting shut out (see ski/snowboard), and then just checking out a few places I haven't been to for years because, hey, I'm up there anyway. Man, does NY spend a shit ton on paving. I knew that living in Saratoga and biking over by Cooperstown, but, they really got to work up around Hunter and Windham recently. Thank you, downstate tax dollars.

Heh yeah, it certainly isn't due to local revenue.

I'm confident that the Upstate shares the same 4 seasons as most of the Great Lakes Region:

    Pothole, Roadwork, Fall, Road-salt.

Years ago they changed the state flower of Ohio to the Orange Barrel

Damn the Wikipedia entry on upstate reads like one of us could have written it. They hit most of the controversies but somehow the article doesn’t mention the Simpsons song.

And I learned something about linguistics too. Apparently the pop v soda controversy has been recognized by science
