the guage is great if you got one but other wise I get down behind the bike and back 3 feet which lets me really see if shit is aligned

I check spokes by hitting them with a wrench and listening for the tone it makes

high tone is tight/ low or dull tone is loose

you can check a wheel really fast by spinning it while hitting the spokes

Was a lot easier when a 2.1 was a fat tire. Now with 2.4+ the treads seem to make it hard to check alignment with the wheel on.

I reckon a hanger has to be well out of alignment to see it visually. It's the ones that kind of look straight but are still messing up shifting that lead you down the rabbit hole of messing with b screws, clutches, cable tension and other crap when a good alignment tool would sort out the issue quickly.

I have the park one - it just works - don't know about the off brand ones but this isn't rocket science so I'm sure they're fine as long as there's not a lot of play in them.

28 tooth front and a 50 tooth rear.. it's like doing a track stand going up. If I needed the low range I'd do 30 oval before I went all the way down to a 28.... But, I always wonder if I don't take the incremental step.

I look at how the cage/chain aligns with the cogs and form the hanger with a crescent wrench, often if you do it right its not even necessary to adj the cable tension in which case you know you got it right ... seems to work for me

I was taught that when we charge 250$ an hr 2hr minimum we never bend things ... we do a forming adjustment

I think all the other responses missed the mark here. There are two answers:

    1. The fancier than Park tools -> Abbey tool already covered, get that one for this case

    2. Cheaper (I think you were looking at this end of the spectrum) a QR rear wheel will thread right into the hanger*, and gives you 2 comparison points right off the bat, plus a convenient 360 degree interface to make needed adjustments. Use a true wheel if possible. Also, a great trail fix/good reason to keep talking at least one riding buddy out of upgrading to a thru-axle frame.

    * Not valid if SRAM recently moved to a proprietary hangar bolt, which wouldn't surprise me!

Yeah, but you're the guy I'm counting on to keep an old, non-thru-axle, frame on the trails!

Seems to be the issue in vast majority of my shifting issues.
I was having trouble getting rear axle to seat on 2017 Ibis HD3, and it turned out to be that the hanger had loosened up. So then I went around the whole bike and tightened everything to spec. Amazing!

I still have a couple of the old QR equipped bikes in the quiver, never heard of that trick or thot of it, but then I just eyeball them anyway

on the above^^ post I went from a 30T to a 28T absolute black on a 5.5 yeti and I didnt really notice the oval thing but i appreciated the lower gearing

That's another good one -> when my rear brake starts acting/sounding funny on my Spearfish, I know the replaceable derailleur hanger needs to be tightened!

Wolftooth has less ovality than OneUp and orients the oval a little differently. Absoluteblack varies the amount and orientation of the oval based on chainring size and smaller rings have more ovality with a more aggressive orientation. I run an AB and like it but I haven't used a WT or OneUp to compare. Personally, I like the aesthetics of the AB rings the best--they're like functional art. Functionally I don't think you can go wrong whatever you choose and they're all cool companies.

north shore billet makes better hangers

    https://northshorebillet.com/

They used to make a " hanger banger " which gave extra support to a der but I don't see it on their site anymore

Not super different from old HD3. I like the boost- makes it a bit more solid, and really like the eagle. 50t X 28 is good for big hole epics and semi-senior citizens like me. But not as slack as the HD4. Big difference is that the knee and quad are finally getting stronger. You gotta come over and ride Tie Canyon!

Haha, I did that ‘ride’ once 18 years ago with Will, to say it ‘didn’t go through’ would be an understatement. I don’t know that corner of the county well at all...

is it normal for tubeless tires to lose air overnight, but not while riding? seems like my back tire slowly leaks. I figured it was from mashing rocks in a beaterly fashion, but it seems fine when I get back from riding (after inflating before riding), but loses air sitting in the garage.

just ignore it and keep pumping?

Normal-ish, depending on how much pressure loss we're talking. Taking the valve core out and squirting a little more sealant in would probably slow it down a bit.
