Oh, and the privacy thing is a real concern. I love to hate on the Apple cult, but their corp practices WRT privacy are a lot less sketchy than Google's. Rooting one's phone can give some control, but that's impossible on the latest ones, and a solid amount of work on any of them. Keep location turned off when you can, and police the individual apps' settings.

Having the Moto phone has certainly raised my awareness of the Google creep factor. Some of the stuff they do is handy, but the overall omnipresent collection of data is weird. Is Apple actually any better in that respect? Have toyed with going back to a dumb phone as well but don't think I can get away with that professionally.
Yeah the SE seems to be hitting a sweet spot in terms of value — for an iPhone. I read that Walmart / ATT & Verizon are running a sale that makes it even more affordable.

My iPhone 6 has been rock solid & just plain works. But even though the SE is the logical replacement, I’m gonna see how the 12 intro affects pricing on the 11 because I do so much photography with my phone that I’d appreciate having those 3 lenses.

12 is coming in the fall, no? At what point have/will they lock the features, i.e. how much is feature set & cost dependent on the global shitdemic?

ordered a SE for pickup Friday cuz I have an iPhone already that needs replacing

Anyone want that new ATT i7 I have?
May work with other carriers if you jailbrake, not sure if that’s still a thing.
I got it New, then switched carriers. Probably only has a few dozen hours on it.
32g, white/silver, comes with a cheap black case.
    $300 shipped.

    What phone now?

Switched providers and got a pile of free iPhone 11s. I just assumed it was the same size as the 8 it replaced, but I was wrong. It’s massive. It’s a great phone, but way too big for my liking. So dumb, not everybody wants a phablet. I was going to swap with a family member for their SE, but he’s only got 64gb of memory. Looks like sizes come back with the 12. I’m not typically an upgrade whore, but I’m looking seriously at the smaller 12 when it comes out.

I've had every pixel XL so far, and generally they've been great. However the pixel 4 XL fucking sucks. The face unlock is absolutely trash. The fingerprint sensor was great, why the fuck do we need face unlock that is a pain and often fails to work on the first try? Secondly, the gesture navigation blows goats. I've inadvertently been moved to the wrong screen so many times. Finally, the wireless charging crapped out on my Pixel 4 XL after only 5 months. The charger works on other phones so I know it's not the charger. Google is gonna send me a refurbished phone on warranty, but setting up a new phone is a huge pain, especially with multiple 2FA accounts. If you're considering the pixel 4 XL, do yourself a favor and look at other options.

I went with the Pixel 3xl as it was hundreds less than either Pixel 4. Sounds like that was a good move. Nice to have a phone with a great camera again. And functional GPS!

My daughter dropped her S9 and killed it the other day so now I'm on an urgent hunt for something actually worth buying and it has to be cheap. She uses it for school (which starts next week) so it has to work well with skype and zoom so it can't be laggy like it seems most entry level new cheap phones are. Am I best off getting something used or is that opening a can of worms? Is there a reputable place to get washed used phones? I see used S9's for a hair under $300, is there a better choice in that 250-300 price range? Is the Pixel 3 as good as an S9? Those are also in the right range but not having a micro SD card slot means you're limited to the 64g it comes with.

Yeah that Pixel 3A is looking like a pretty solid choice. I think I'm leaning in that direction, never been terribly impressed with my S9 anyway so maybe I'll let the kid be the guinea pig on this.

The Pixel 3a is what I'd get today if I broke my Pixel 2. I'd miss the extra water resistance, but in other ways, it is preferable to the flagship models (headphone jack).

I'm finding my 3a to be meh. Battery life is starting to suck. And it just seems slow. I think I've had it for about a year.

Well, I guess we'll find out because I just ordered it. I hope that Swappa site is as good as the ratings suggest. I went with a local seller rather than otherwise just in case so I can go visit him if it's not as advertised, for a $20 difference it seemed like a good idea.

While I was typing that I got confirmation and a USPS tracking number, I don't think I've ever had that happen so quickly with an online order. Maybe because I don't order online often but the fact that a tracking number was sent so quickly is kind of impressive.

I've used swappa in the past. I bought a Nexus 5 and it was great for a couple months before it crapped out and wouldn't connect to cell towers. I had gotten a killer deal on it but it was an international version so there was absolutely no hope of getting the failing phone warrantied. I tried replacing the antenna but that didn't fix the problem.

I'd use Swappa again but only on if saving a hundred dollars was worth the risk of having something fail with no warranty.

I admit that I was thinking of the 4a, but I had heard the 3a was good too. My battery life sucks now on my Pixel 2, but I've had it for a couple years. I'll probably see how much it would cost to replace it in the next 6 months. If it's expensive, I'll run it until dead and then get the 4a or 5 depending on how compelling the latter is when released.

I’ve still got this i7 laying around. Should I be asking more for it now?

I got that 3A for my daughter a few months ago and she seems to like it so far and now it's my turn. I'm not sure what I want other than a rugged phone but most of them are at least a generation back. There are a few nice enough looking Chinese ones but is it worth getting something now and being limited to 4G LTE even if it has Android 10?

I have the Pixel 3A and just put a OtterBox case on it keeps it pretty well protected so far.

Anyone else finding Android 11 very annoying? Lots of glitches with graphics. And challenging to take screenshots.

I'm waiting for black Friday sales for phone upgrade time. Mrs C and I are both using Moto G6 phones, and it looks like the G9 is, coming soon. Hoping for cheap G8 sales.

Not liking that Motos turned into Phablets. My daughter wants a smaller phone, I want to pay Moto prices through Google Fi.

Any 5G experts/dentists that have beta on how long it’ll take to get coverage beyond just dense metro areas?

My understanding is that unless the technology changes, ‘the last mile’ will be slower 4G in those rural areas indefinitely

I was just researching that this morning. I like the size, it’s close to my iPhone 8.

Many of these rural locations have no infrastructure for the backhaul to the internet backbone. They are in some cases still only on 3G or even 1G voice in some locations. It takes usually a fiber line from the tower as well as the 5G antennas to get the tower up on 5G. That is why they are not even on 4G yet.

Plus 5G depending on the carrier maybe not much better than their 4G speeds. It does though allow them to not have to invest in new traditional cell towers with the use of microcell towers (like hanging a few antennas off telephone poles, street lights poles, etc.) Here is the AT&T discussion on their 5g E- versus their down the road 5G +. https://www.howtogeek.com/399560/5g-...-need-to-know/

Had a discussion with another Mobile carrier store branch manager that was part the big merger just recently and the comment was that in our area, yes their 5G is available, but it is not yet worth the expense yet for what you gain (new 5G phone or device for one) and that their 4G has come a long way and is pretty good and stable now.

DDG browser app stopped working today. I don't want to do a clean reinstall of the app because I don't want to lose some bookmarks.
