Stock market soars based on this: "Gilead Sciences reported “positive data” coming from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ clinical trial of its investigational remdesivir treatment for covid-19. The company said 'the trial has met its primary endpoint.' " No actual data released yet.

    Pump and dump.

Both mine and my girlfriend’s test came back negative (throat culture). Which was surprising since a couple people had tested positive in admin, where she works, plus she had run the entrance and screen people coming and going. They have a whole wing of positive patients and are averaging at least one death a day.

None the less, they’ve had a lot of new admissions, because the old folks keep falling down and hurting themselves.

It would/will be nice when the anti-bodies test start to become more available.

Exactly - so we have localization of the virus at the scene of the crime. The murder weapon could involve an antiphospholipid antibody (or similar mechanism), that triggers the inappropriate coagulation cascade as the effect colocalizes, and the patient is fuct. You would be more up on this, but I imagine that would be a concern in re: designing the vaccine what with antibody dependent enhancement of infection.

Oh, and I'm gonna be a little pessimistic about remdesivir as a "game changer". Likely a useful tool, but from what we're seeing here (we're also part of the remdesivir clinical trial coalition) not the be- all end-all solution to the problem.

On Tuesday when a reporter asked in an East Room event whether the U.S. would surpass 5 million coronavirus tests per day, the president said that's coming "very soon." But on Wednesday, the president claimed he never said that, blaming a "media trap."

    /snip

according to the official White House transcript:

Reporter: "Did I hear you saying you're confident you can surpass 5 million tests per day? Is that —"

President Trump: "Oh, well, we're going to be there very soon. If you look at the numbers, it could be that we're getting very close. I mean, I don't have the exact numbers. We would've had them if you asked me the same question a little while ago because people with the statistics were there. We're going to be there very soon. We're really — we're really doing — I mean, I watched your report on NBC today and it was an incorrect report, because we're really doing a great job on testing..."

Easy for you to say. All you have to do these days is kick back in your La-Z-Boy and watch endless reruns of Matlock. Perhaps squeezing in a couple more episodes of Murder She Wrote if you finished your crossword puzzles in time.

Makes you wish we'd required that of every traveler from China a few months back, doesn't it?

Of course, not doing it now can give us a chance to look back with regret again, so we've got that going for us. Which is nice.

U.S. coronavirus outbreak soon to be deadlier than any flu since 1967 as deaths top 60,000

(Reuters) - U.S. deaths from the novel coronavirus topped 60,000 on Wednesday and the outbreak will soon be deadlier than any flu season since 1967, according to a Reuters tally.

America's worst flu season in recent years was in 2017-2018 when more than 61,000 people died, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Preventihere

The only deadlier flu seasons were in 1967 when about 100,000 Americans died, 1957 when 116,000 died and the Spanish flu of 1918 when 675,000 died, according to the CDC.

The United States has the world’s highest coronavirus death toll and a daily average of 2,000 people died in April of the highly contagious respiratory illness COVID-19, according to a Reuters tally. The first U.S. death was recorded on Feb. 29 but recent testing in California indicates the first death might have been on Feb. 6, with the virus circulating weeks earlier than previously thought.

On Tuesday, COVID-19 deaths in the United States eclipsed in a few months the 58,220 Americans killed during 16 years of U.S. military involvement during the Vietnam War. Cases topped 1 million.

The actual number of cases is thought to be higher, with state public health officials cautioning that shortages of trained workers and materials have limited testing capacity.

The outbreak could take nearly 73,000 U.S. lives by Aug. 4, compared with an April 22 forecast of over 67,600, according to the University of Washington's predictive model here often cited by White House officials.

In early March, the prospect that the coronavirus would kill more Americans than the flu was unthinkable to many politicians who played down the risk of the new virus.

Republican President Donald Trump tweeted on March 9: “So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!”

On March 11, Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told New Yorkers during a radio interview to eat out at restaurants if they were not sick.

That same day, top U.S. infectious diseases expert Dr. Anthony Fauci warned Congress that the coronavirus was at least 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu.

There is as yet no treatment or vaccine for coronavirus while flu vaccines are widely available along with treatments.

I read somewhere that the President of Live Nation gave an interview where he said he's anticipating no large concerts for 12-18 months......minimum. 2020 and Covfefe can eat a giant bag of dicks.

Crosswords, yep. Still do NYT Saturday in pen as a measure of any mental decline. And yerp, it's easy for me to say I support people having safe working conditions. And if you can show me an example of workers getting safer working conditions or fair pay without having to resort to strikes I'll fact check it. The world is what it is and what it has always been.

Yes, most US strains appear to be from Europe's early spread.

But the Saudi's bought a stake in Live Nation this week so the stock has more than doubled from recent low.

In a month, with draconian social distancing measures in place....

73k deaths by Aug. 4? How is that remotely possible? There will be ~63k dead by tomorrow afternoon. ~2k are dying per day right now, and the US curve looks like it will pretty closely follow the shape of daily death curves in the UK/Italy/Spain/France, so ~1k will still be dying every day at the end of May. The death toll will likely be well above 100k by the end of May.

Maybe that was sloppy writing that actually meant 73k additional deaths, not counting the 60K who are already dead?

I think whenever they quote these numbers they should also include that the death numbers are fantastically high despite having taken extraordinary measures to help reduce the spread of the virus. That should never been forgotten. We'd most likely already be north of 1967 and 1957 if no distancing efforts were taken.

Beat me to it. I was just about to say that's either a typo, wishful thinking or an outright lie. In all likelihood, the actual death toll in the US is already over 73k.
