Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

What would you say if all the sudden number of flu deaths increased by the amount of deaths we've seen so far with CV-19? Would you say that's okay because it's just the flu?

I lived in a frat! ΔΧ!
Last year that I attended college lived in the frat house. I was majoring in ΔΧA and hitch hiking across Canada. A very good year.

This should just be stickied at the top of every new page of this thread. The economy was FUCKED no matter what. Saving lives vs. saving the economy is a false dichotomy of the highest order. We can get screwed economically in a relatively controlled fashion that preserves the integrity of our food supply and essential services and mitigates loss of life; or, the economy can crash even harder in a chaotic fashion that threatens the very fabric of modern existence, and millions of people die on top of that. That's the choice.

Those 1-4 million deaths would occur in ~2 months. 2.8 million people died all of last year from all causes. Even at the low end of that estimate that's 20,000 deaths per day. Anyone who thinks that people would be going about their normal daily lives going to bars and restaurants, concerts, sporting events, flying on airplanes, watching their 401k balance steadily grow, etc. while 20,000+ people die every day is fucking high.

I'm damn lucky to still be working and have savings I can turn to. I feel for people like Austin right now, I really do. I just sent my government virus cheese to my sister because she's a restaurant server who's currently unemployed (and a recently divorced single mom on top of that). All I can say is you were screwed no matter what and this is better than the alternative.

But, you are trading and accelerating deaths for heart disease deaths, chronic lower respiratory deaths and cancer deaths and yeah the byproduct of this shutdown is a bunch of other deaths car accidents, etc are reduced as well.

Does the US have a plan for reopening? I poked around cdc.gov and coronavirus.gov. All I see there is reactive response to initial outbreak.

After decades of slinging dick in the 70s/80s (most likely unprotected), doing untold amounts of drugs, skiing questionable conditions, and living some pretty darn outrageous lives (and I do mean that in the best possible way), NOW all of a sudden everyone's risk adverse and acting like a bunch of sheep. I really don't get it. I do have to laugh, though. NOW everyone's a bunch of goody-two shoes law abiders.
I'm going to refrain from name calling, but seriously, you think everyone is staying home because we're "a bunch of goody-two shoes law abiders"? We're staying at home because we're smart enough to listen to the people smarter than us who have said that is the best way to slow the spread and keep more of us alive long term, and keep our economy strong, long term. These points repeatedly escape you, even though they have been repeated ad nauseum.

But I will repeat anyway: not only will fewer people die if we all do what we can to slow the virus, but our economy will rebound more rapidly. It may seem painful right now while our society is sick and we're taking our medicine, but the pain will be way worse if we don't do that.

True. I wonder how many of them would be volunteering in the hospitals to help COVID patients AFTER they got canned from said establishments.

    From Politico recently:

Like the majority of policy decisions within this White House, the nascent moves to restart the economy have been plagued by different factions of staffers vying for power — or simply not communicating with one another. Some officials are looking at data from states to make their recommendations, while economic officials are weighing moves to change tax policy to boost growth once again.

Trump and his top aides are receiving advice from a number of executives and donors, some of whom are urging him to reopen the country in phases. The president and his advisers have yet to settle on the benchmarks they’ll use to decide which parts of the country reopen and when, according to interviews with eight senior administration officials and Republicans close to the White House.
That’s why I posted about the CA metrics, and Ripz posted about the Swiss benchmarks. There’s still no clear plan at federal level.

Well that sounds good n all - but why should we listen to you? I think we should follow the direction of the guy with no savings and couldn't even land (in his words) a menial job. That's where my money is. Decision maker extraordinaire.

there are some positive things, without the normal ebb and flow of life in America a lot less people are dying in car accidents, less workplace accidents and for the first time in long time there were no mass shootings at a school in the month of march

Doesnt matter if the Feds have a plan, it the states who rule. Cuomo just spent an hour on TV talking about his and the regional alliance just formed, and the Ca. Governor had a press conference talking about their initial thoughts. Trump is probably either shouting at people or tweeting.

Again, I left before the regulations came about. They were enacted when I was there. I would have thought that if people were paying that much attention to my activities, they would also have paid attention to the timeline and the fact that there were more cases with 10 miles of our home than in Switzerland.

Even if there's any point to the personal attack, the point still stands. Maybe I made a mistake, maybe I've thought about it and, heavens, changed my mind. That's all completely irrelevant.

I never understand that ad hom angle. I hope you understood I was joking when I wrote "Dick".

    Carry on.

Seems like the reduction in car accidents runs counter to the rest of your argument.

I have what I think is a sweet quiver and a pic in the thread. If you would like to challenge whether or not I'm a skier, I'd do a Chinese downhill lap with you. "What the fuck a Chinese downhill?!?" It's where I hand you a beer at the finish line. I'll be on my second.

In other news, Idaho's Gov (one of the more red govs in the nation), just extended stay at home through 4/30. Also implemented a 14 day quarantine for out of state travelers other than essential workers coming into Idaho.

To bring it back to skiing, it's not like a lot of people here are advocating skiing in extreme avalanche danger, poaching closed areas, etc. The overall tenor here is to call out stupidity and advocating violating social distancing is stupidity.

What a wonderful excuse for shitty behavior.
