Any opinions on where to pick up a (preferably side by side) shotgun to pass on to future generations?

Personally I would get a bonafides US trench gun with the perforated heat guard and the bayonet attachment.

Warms my heart to see the kalifornia bruthas buying up all the STANDARD capacity magazines they can while the ban is repealed. They have set records and completely cleaned out many online retailers.
They also can reconvert any old 30 rd mags that had limiters installed.
Well done!

Guess if I had to live in the barrio and deal in dope like the dude and I'd want to be armed myself.
A few people feel the rain. Most people just get wet.
Franchi pre Beretta made awesome stuff. Post beretta they made medium grade stuff. If you buy a pre B you can score a deal on a sweet gun because most people don't know that and compare prices to the new stuff.
My Franchi o/u is as good or better than a browning citori.

$12k
I got mine with 12 and 20 gauge barrels for $1500.
The browning citori is a nice gun though. I hate ruger labels, you can't get a good enough deal on one.
Add a beretta 686 as another nice o/u gun.
I have seen all of the problems below in a gun I traded my buddy with for a round of sporting clays. I couldn't believe he bought two of them, granted he bought the second one at garage sale for $500.
The break open pivots where loose and have too much play for me.
There are problems with the ejectors

Sometimes the safeties won't move forward.

And the biggest problem...
when they get shot enough, the safeties slide into the on position after the first shot.
I'm proud of this one. The top left was another gun - trash shooting. It's a solid 1 MOA gun.
The other five are three round groups as I was zeroing a new rifle at 100 yds. SRS A2, Kahles k525i, Hornaday 6.5 CM 147gr ELD Match. Best group (bottom left) is 3/16", worst group (center-top) is 5/8". These were rounds 5-19 out of the barrel.

new to me 66-2. Beautiful gun.

Of those problems, I've suffered the one where the shells would fall past the ejectors. But, I attributed this to one time where I maybe got a little overzealous in my field stripping and cleaning. Anyway, I sent it back to Ruger and they fixed it without question, and even tuned up the action without me asking. So, it came back to me better than new.
One could argue that no gun at that price-point should have any defects, especially a gun that allegedly sunk most of its cost into engineering rather than aesthetics. But, most every gun I've ever had has had to go back to the manufacturer at some point for some problem or another.
Anyway, the Red Label fits me well enough. I got a limit of dove in 45 minutes and less than 2 boxes of shells one opening morning; so I can't complain too much.
Have you ever tried a citori browning, a beretta 687 or a caeser guerini? They are all higher price points but they so worth it. I just mentioned the franchi (which I have beat the living snot out of for 17 years without a fault) because the older ones can be at that level closer to the ruger's price point. Its cheaper but I think the short comings are dramatic.
