Going to see a doctor this Friday to find out what’s going on.
    Thank you for asking.

I don’t think I read how your big race went.
    How did it go??
Oh no! I hope it’s nothing serious and you can get healed up.

The June race was great! The views were amazing, there had been a fresh coat of snow overnight. The climb was a bitch. I’m slow, so I didn’t finish as fast as I had hoped, but still finished under the time I was worried it would take me. The nice thing about being slow is you pretty much have the course to yourself! Lol! I’m thinking about the 50k next year.

My hamstring is finally healing up, so if I can keep from irritating it again, I’m hoping to get back in to the mountains more.

Doing the half marathon there last month I didn't carry water and only tried drinking once at aid station but choked when it went down wrong pipe. In this big race the the other day I premixed all water in jugs with salt tabs and electrolite tabs. Drank about 8 liters of that mixed along the way with a few cups of flat coke and gatorade here and there at aid stations.

It was 80 deg, which is hot for this area. Also drank maybe a liter of creek water along the way. So cold and refreshing. It was hard to not chug too much to avoid hypernatremia. I been drinking from all the creeks in the area for 20 years trying to keep my gut tough. The random ppl who caught me doing it were shocked I didn't have filter , haha, They were jealous!

As far as hill running goes, I would agree with Steve in that you need to really think about what gear you are in. Stride on low angle vs medium angle vs steep angle going up and down. Try to fall into higher cadence/smaller steps sooner then you think while retaining 'pep in your step'.

Same thing if you have to fall into 1st gear ie hiking. Smaller steps while trying to fall forward past your center of gravity, like flat running.

With technology I have just stuck with a stop watch. Sometimes time a known distance, some times go for certain time. I put a lot of thought into type of running terrain. flat vs mountain. last year at this exact time I was only going for steep vertical and had muscle bound quads that were no good on the flats. It was like having huge horsepower engine stuck in low gear.

On the bike i didn't use a speedometer or watt meter. Just went by feel, hunger and thirst.

In the run portion of that race I knew that my strength has always been mountain climbing over running. We had 17 miles with 2000' before even hitting the mountain and remaining 4500. All these guys passed me and then gassed out and I repassed them with relatively fresh legs .

anyway I'm rambling and feeling like a human for the first time in 3 days lol

My left knee has a little tenderness that comes and goes. I recently diagnosed it as pronation issue in foot creating pain in knee.

Stepped up game yesterday and bought a treadmill and a bike trainer. Gonna get the pain cave going for the winter. Just need one of those endless pools, I guess they have them in town there for $20,000. Maybe sell my truck?

Today competed in Cirque Series race at Alyeska. www.cirqueseries.com 5.9 miles, 3900vert

Last year this was the race that got me going on training program and stoked to avoid mid life crisis. In the race last year I blasted too hard to the top and ran out of gas on the dh. Ended up in 30th with time of 1:30.

This year, after a year of honest training, I chopped off 10 minutes (1:20) and ended up 8th in pro class, my first 'pro race' whatever that means and 11th over all. I felt pretty fresh throughout and probably could've push the up harder but was glad I didn't.

I feel like after every race my head sprouts a few hundred more grey hairs. What does that mean? the clock is ticking...

Huh, well, not trying hijack thread or anything...

Laying on couch in recovery mode from this mornings high output experience in Ak State Championships Half Marathon.

Fell in to 3rd right at the gun and popped off first mile in 5:30.

2nd mile 11:30. Alright 6 min mile pace, time to hang onto pain train.

    3rd mile 17:30

4th and 5th seemed to drag on. Less fun now.

36 min at 6 mile. Dropped to 4th then 5th , uh oh

Did last race at 1:23. My goal was to break 1:20 so I wanted to hit turnaround on out/ back course at 40 min.... I was 39:50

It was nice to look back at folks chasing now. Fast guys, random hotties and the further we got more bored house wife types .

I jumped back to 4th and was on cruise control. 59:57 at 10 mile.

In my last half marathon the wheels sorta fell off last 2 miles . I was determined to not fall apart.

Dude came back and took 4th back. We are 2 miles out and I am fearful someone is gonna blow by. I kept thinking I was hearing foot steps. No one there.

Last push to finish, so tired 1:19:40 5th overall , 6:05 / mile.

Halleluja ! Could barely walk to car all hobbled up. Breaking 6 seems feasible...

Way to get after it. Impressive pace and your results are motivating. I've got a half marathon in 2 weeks, shooting for 7/mile. Full marathon 6 weeks after that, looking for 7:30-7:40/mile.

Dang , I'm sore today! I think I am feeling compounded wear and tear from last month of racing . Long triathlon then 2 weeks to mountain run then 2 weeks to yesterday's race.

Have a 10k 2 weeks from now then full marathon month after that. That should wrap up fall race plans. Just gotta not fall apart . Then good long rest period.

It is funny that my wife is a professional massage therapist but it is like pulling teeth to get any help in that department. She watches me limp around asking why i do this to myself . What do they say, the cobblers kids have no shoes

My advice is to do a couple weeks of slow runs. Long runs every 3rd or 4th day is fine, but keep the pace slow. The best conditioning is cycling between stress and recovery. There's nothing you can do between now and the marathon except hurt yourself.

Ha ha. I hear ya. The day following most of my ultras I would walk 18 holes of golf, usually as a single paired in a foursome. As I limped around the course, a golfer in my foursome would often ask if I were injured, to which I would respond, "I ran a long foot race yesterday." They would usually get curious and ask questions. The conversation would go something like: "How far?" "50 kilometers, which is around 31 miles, very hilly." "Seriously?" I wonder how many of those guys thought I was lying out my ass.

I’m reading “Training for the new alpinism” - awesome read re: endurance training. Sounds like You’re violating everything recommended (at my level) about periodized training and taper/rest periods, but seem to be powering through just fine. Maybe you’re in the “world-elite” category they keep calling out?

Check out the book “Becoming a supple leopard”. Great book with lots of detailed stretching, foam rolling, mobilization, etc exercises. Was a game changer for me. That being said, when one works as hard as you are, I doubt there’s much you can do to prevent soreness...

Just getting back on the wagon. Starting out with a bunch of short runs, 2 miles or less but sometimes twice a day. I’ll switch to longer slower runs soon. At least it only took a couple runs to get to 16 minute 2 mile runs. Ski season is coming and this is the first year I’ll be training for it without access to a really good gym.

That’s damn fast man. Do you think doing the first mile at 5:30 was too aggressive?

Nothing new training wise in this if you’re familiar with long distance training regimens, but it is definitely targeted at higher end athletes, which, in itself, is an interesting window into alpinism.

If anyone wants a new copy, I have one. $20 + ship? Or local to pdx...

Yeah I saw the split and turned to the guy next to me and was 'whoa 5:30 seems too fast' and then he said ' ill take it' . We were side by at in 2/3 . The guy 10 yards up held the 5:30 pace straight through for the win at 1:11.

Funny thing at mile 5.5 or so, a guy passed me was same guy who passed me at same mile mark in the half marathon I did 2 months ago, on a different course.

So yes to answer your question 5:30 too fast . General objective to get negative split on the return, I was lucky to pull off same split and not lose ground.

But I guess that is always my tactic, push out with the leaders and try to keep up, versus sticking to my own planned pace.

Brother in law ran the 100 this weekend in Leadville. Man what a brutal race. My wife paced him over 20 miles including Hope Pass twice. He finished 51st with 23:28. Dude that won was 7 hours faster and had a 9 minute mike pace.....for a hundred miles! That’s insanity.

Awesome on your BIL. Anyone who finishes has some serious grit.

And don’t forget that Krar (who won) also placed 14th just a week before in the 100 mountain bike. Unbelievable.

Congrats to your BIL. Sub-24 hours is strong work. Does he plan to go for the crimson cheetah at Wasatch? Yeah, Rob Krar is fast, had a great race.
