Sorry for the spam but I’m recovering from a broken hip and won’t be running for a year or two and wanted to pass this stuff on.
I bought a Salomon Sense 8 vest last summer, used it for 2 training runs and the Rut 28k. Haven’t touched it since. Size large - basically brand new. I’m selling for $65 shipped. PM if you’re interested or want to make an offer. I can attest to being kootie free and have thoroughly cleaned the bottles but you can also replace them from salomon.
I also have a basically brand new pair of Altra Olympus 2.5 size 10.5. Used for two trail races - about 40 miles total. They’re free to anyone who covers shipping. SOLD SOLD SOLD

I'm interested in the trail runners. I'm a 10.5 in most athletic shoes and have been meaning to try some trail running.
Thanks! You too! Sorry to hear you’re going through that. I also did a femoral neck stress fracture during a marathon a couple years ago - if you have any questions about rehab feel free to reach out.
With that break I waited 6-7 months before running again too. When I got back to it one thing that really helped me was switching to maximal shoes. They minimized the impact of running so much for me. I felt like I could get back to running with way less discomfort than I had with normal shoes.
This time around I fractured my acetabulum in a ski fall a couple months ago. I had a long 10 weeks of no weight bearing but just got off crutches last week. It’s so nice to be able to ride bikes and really get around again [emoji3]
Mine was couple months after a marathon while I was training for a half.
I was running 35 miles per week (mostly on treadmill) and one day I couldn’t lift my right leg.
How did you find out yours?
How many miles were you running?
I ran with ASICS Kayano most the time, but now I’m looking into other brands with softer cushions.
Do you have any suggestions?
I really would like to avoid the same injury.
This time I’m going to focus on strength training and cross training
Have you done anything differently after the stress fracture?
Sorry I’m asking so many questions.
I haven’t ran into anyone who had the same injury, so I would love to hear your experiences.
Thanks in advance.
Stoke!
And thanks to @benfjord for the trail runners. Did 4.5mi in them today for first run. Definitely a different feel with the extra padding and zero drop. Felt good though I worry my right foot swelling on longer runs may make them a little short. Which is frustrating because my left foot is perfect and I really like the last.
Happy to help! I think I hit all your questions here, but by all means PM if you have any question:
I was at mile 22 of my first marathon and had tons of pain, cramping, etc and limped through the finish in severe pain. Docs said I probably started the race with a small stress fracture and then it just got worse as the race went on. I ended up breaking 75% of my femoral neck and still hae 3 big screws in there from the repair. All my docs said leave them in for life so I have no plans to remove.
At the time I was running a lot - probably 35+ miles a week like you were and I had a lot of trail/vert mixed in. I had some hip flexor/glute pain leading up the marathon which were signs that I had a stress fracture, but there's no way I would have known it was a stress fracture. I mean - when you're running that much everything kind hurts
7 months post surgery I went for a run in some Salomon minimalist shoes. It was pretty painful. I bought the Altra Olympus, did the same run and felt great. I stayed on the Olympus ever since (although I run 95% trail now).
Before the break I didn't really go to the gym, but after the break I mixed in 2-4 strengh training days a week. That gym stuff didn't make me a faster runner, but the overall strength training has been great - I think its why avoided I any more running injuries.
One thing I'd do differently? Recently I developed knee pain in the leg I did the stress fracture in (4 years post surgery). My PT says this knee pain is probably a result of me unconciously lightly favoring my hip post stress fracture and putting more stress on my knee as a result. I realize now that after a major injury there's a gap where you're medically "done" with PT, but your body isn't really "fixed" completely. This time around I think I'm going to work at least with a peronsal trainer in the months after PT finishes - I figure someone good will be able to recognize and help fix imbalance in my leg.
Hope that all helps!
Thank you for the detailed reply.
This really helps to hear from another who went through similar experiences.
I wish I can run everyday but I realized I probably should run 3-4 days and cross/ strength train 3-4 days to avoid injuries.
Do you have any suggestions for good strength training regimens for hip area?
I could PM you instead, but figured others could use this information as well.
Thank you so much!
Saw this big blue heron yesterday while I was cruising along the Platte.

@nutmeg What's that elaborate lacing scheme you've got going on there?

Cruiser, I’m trying out Switzerland running shoes brand called ON.
Mine’s Cloudflyer and so far I like them.
They are extremely light (especially upper feels non existing) and the bottom support is a little firmer than I expected but we’ll see how it goes.

Not exactly sure what Nutmeg is doing, but I've seen this before: https://runrepeat.com/top-10-running...ing-techniques
The shoes came with the lace scheme, so I have no idea what it’s for.
But my upper feet barely felt any pressure.
A pair of la sportiva trail shoes that I bought last year came with a lacing diagram because the top part is so fiddly. But hey, they're European. So anything goes...

Consider yourselves fortunate. It's been 1 year 2 weeks since my final run. I miss the hell out of it. It's the quick simple way to stay in aerobic shape: put on shoes, get your ass out the door, shuffle, jog, trot or run. It's all good.

It’ll only get easier until you start running 6 plus miles.
Keep doing what you’re doing and eventually you’ll find the joy of running.
Make sure you have a good pair of running shoes.
Do everything you can to prevent injuries.
It’ll eventually happen, but by trying, you can minimize them.
