yep. that's why. I am lucky that I have some beautiful trails very close by that soften the blow. even if they make it much fucking harder.

Me = the contrary. Love running when in shape but for crying out loud, the results... Being a multi-injured gimp, something gives at some point.
Hip, pelvis, knee.. you name it. First marathon went with a split pelvis, 2 weeks before my first ultra my acl decided to crap the bucket. Both out of the blue.
No matter what shoes, physio, tech training or whatnot. Slowly accepting that once a gimp, always a gimp.
Not keeping me from running though.
Now trying a much slower approach, 2xweek long walks (2h+) 2xweek short runs (sub 10k) for few months with other activities like gym, stretch etc.
Lets see how this year goes.
The floggings will continue until morale improves.
My love (or hate) for running waxes and wanes. I've had a good last several years, and did more running then cycling. Since my house burned, and I now live .5 miles from work, I have lost one of my best routines, the 4-5 mile run to work. I have a real hard time just getting up early to run, and forget running after work. One I could do 3 to 4 days as commutes, then long weekend runs all went well. Since the fire I just have not been able to get into a good routine. I am going to pay the price in about a week and a half, and am going tobe hating life after about mile 8 in the Mammoth Half.

May I suggest your own east side half; start at saddlebag lake, trot along saddebag lake, trot up greenstone bowl, drop gps, up and over to flintys, drop flintys down to the flats, cruise up to the top of the y couloir, drop down the y, cruise up to the notch along the conness east ridge, trot along the ridge to the main chute of greenstone bowl, drop the chute, trot along the lake back to parking lot.
first time getting the dreaded nipple chafe, no blood but stings like a mofo. beautiful night though, low 70s and no humidity
what's your guys go to post run beer? I only had some stray Molsons in the fridge... not really cutting it
Post run? My favorite run is to run to one of many microbrew pubs have a beer or two and the run back.

^^harrier style!!
Usually, my go to is water followed by coffee cuz I run during work days
Just curious, but why are your knees shot? Too much running, blown ACLs skiing, genetics, other?
Did nine miles today. No speed, but feet knees and legs felt fine. A little behind where I usually am before a half, so I don't expect much next Sunday. At least it is 90% downhill, but oh does that uphill hurt at 8,000'.

Knee (singular). More specifically, left knee. Advanced bone-on-bone patellafemoral arthritis w/ reactive bone spurs that impede ROM. It is very likely the legacy of bashing my kneecap in 1993 on a mountaineering traverse in the Picket Range (North Cascades) while exiting down from Luna Col toward Access Creek cirque in a light misting rain. Fortunately, it was toward the end of the trip and I managed to get out on my own power. My ACLs are fine (bomber), never an issue. No ligament problems. Right knee shows some arthritis in the medial compartment, normal wear and tear, but functions fine. Years of running, hiking, skiing and other activities -- and a high pain threshold -- may have delayed the need for TKA surgery. OA eventually prevented me from running, hiking, skiing and bicycling in that order), resulting in a downward spiral. I need a new knee.
Sounds like you got great mileage out of your old onr...good luck.

Thanks. Yeah, I can't complain. I'm a pretty big guy, did lots of little guy endurance events. I was the heaviest finisher in each of my 88 ultra finishes. I hope the new knee gets me back out there, albeit on routes mellower and slower than I once did. I meet with the surgeon tomorrow.
Now that we cleared that up, what's the difference between GeezerSteve and OldSteve?
A knee?
Attitude
spelling, mostly
When are you planning to get the surgery?
Hope you can get back to running again!

This describes my battle with running, though different injuries, and it has kept me from running. I can't run without constant maintenance, which I do religiously...until I don't. Cycling, on the other hand, requires almost no maintenance nor PT, so that's mostly what I'm doing now.
Those long breaks from running have had me starting from scratch a few times. Along with the wisdom of age, I've learned to start really slow. 1 mile until I have no discomfort, then two, then three, and so on. I did that this winter, and while it took me about 5 weeks to get to three miles, and another 3 weeks to hit four, I was running with basically no discomfort. I know it's low mileage, but for me, that's a pretty significant development. Along with steady PT and core strengthening, and plenty of walking and hiking, I was feeling better on my feet than I have in a couple of years. Sadly, I fucked my ankle playing tag with my son, and then split my knee open a couple weeks ago, so I'm going to have to start over...again. It's really hard to go out and only run one mile, but if you mix it with some walking and strength training, it's not so bad. I'm not saying this is the answer to your problems, either, but it's helped me a lot.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.
The alpine in CO is opening up for some trail running...still some snow drifts here and there but manageable

^^^ looks awesome. Too damn hot down on the Front Range. Heading up to Berthoud/WP/Fraser this weekend for a “run camp” with a few friends. Anyone know how to link the top of Berthoud north along the divide to James Peak/Jim Creek trail? Been eyeing that trail that seems to traverse under Mt Eva for like 20 years.
