I say go for it. Sounds like you know what you want. I bet the design your thinking of definitely lives up to what you want out of it..

Just don’t expect it to be super light weight

IIRC, On3p veneer is heavier than praxis veneer.

I do half and move it over. I’ve had it for years it was cheap. I figure my rock skis always need a flattening going every fall anyway....

So what is the downside to a spring tune when things get more firm/cold? Less glide?

Nothing really if you don’t mind slow Skis.

did some w108 (184) vs k108 (181) back to back testing yesterday.

Surprise surprise - k108s are a lot easier to ski in tracked, bumpy, rotten spring corn than 9cm longer ee w108s. Kartels are super easy to release, and while you cannot just hammer through everything like with w108s, they are just so perfectly suited for bump to bump playfulness. I am really, really wanting to try some k116s... And, man oh man the top sheet finish of the "limited release" k108s is just stunning.

My W108s just wanted to go full throttle all the time - an ambitous endeavour given the somewhat varying, tracked out and bumpy conditions, as well as my hung over low energy self. Simply put - they wanted to go faster than i did But man oh man i am looking forward to trying my Big Boiii Quiver (TM) skis (my 184 w108/BGs with pivots, as opposed to my 179/tecton pairs) in good snow. I mounted these w108s 1cm forward due to past mounts (BGs are on the line though), and being newly waxed they accelerated like crazy in the springy sun baked fresh. If w114s are even faster... mymymy. And no, the black dot underneath the ski where i drilled through the ski held up just fine and was not noticable at all

a kartel 108 or 98 variation as a spring tourer seem like a really good idea, though i would prob want em to be lighter and stiffer - two potentially opposing design goals - though a (near) stock w98 might just be what i am looking for as well

^^ Interesting to see that side by side photo. Kartel's aren't really mounted *that* much more forward than the Wrens because of the 184 vs. 181 length difference (putting aside your 1cm forward mount), so I figure with 186 Kartels I'll end up with about the same amount of ski in front of me as the 184 wren 108's. Which is good. Sounds like your K108 experience supports my decision to go with a tour layup and make them my slackcountry ski. (also: look upthread, I'm selling some W98's)

What have you skied for more center-ish mount skis before, and enjoyed?? Just wondering. Are some of the Black crows a little more centered?

97cm of tip on Kartel 186's

    101cm of tip on W108 184's

I've had several with mixed results, usually length related. Jeffrey 110's I liked but in 181cm felt short in deeper snow. Crows Anima Freebirds and Noctas are both progressively mounted and I like them. Had some Faction Candide 3.0's and *hated* them. I think it's good / important to be able to have fun on different style skis, though, in general.

Thanks for that. Yeah, not bad at all. When it's like 8-9cm different is when it messes with me and I feel like I'm on snowlerblades or something.

yeah - saw your skis above, but will be going for a 179/181 option when that time comes around. No immediate rush as the non-glacier skiing part of this season is over and done with as of sunday. Time will tell what is the right way forward - considered a rustler 10/11 combo for touring, but thought better of it as i have too many skis as is Thanks for pointing them out though

Well shit that just cost me some cash... I have 191 116s as well as 189 108s and absolutely love both skis (as well as my other ON3Ps)... The 116s have absolutely shocked the shit out of me as this type of ski I typically don't jive with... However the 116 is a blast and can still get after it... Just called my shop and 191 108 Kartels have been ordered... Looks like more skis are going up on GS this year...

Thanks for the post kid...! At least I have someone to blame when my wife founds out...

    Nice.

I got another day on W108s today. Unbelievably good skis. Shoulda bought them last year.. Super fast, but still very nimble and poppy whenever you need them to be. I could one ski quiver these skis, for sure. I have had them in ice, slush, and soft snow, and all the crud in between, just need to try them in wind crust. Next year.. These could be my new favorite. Tail is nice and locked in too, even though they have a playful feel. They feel like 191 Wrens mixed with Atomic Backland 109s, keeping the best of both worlds.

Yesterday was on K108s. I really like them too. Soooo snappy and quick. They are a party ski, even more so than K116s. They make me want to jump in between and over moguls, and spin and throw shiftys like no other skis I have tried. They are as light in the air as my Shreditor 92 park skis, but then rally fast if you keep a centered stance on the bases. Sweet skis. For 2020, I will be getting some 191 Kartels for sure. 186 are a little short for me, but I want to spend a full year on the shorter size, and get better at spins and butters. Then translate it over to the bigger ski, at faster speeds. 186 still ski fast, and do not noodle on me when I try to shut them down quickly at 45mph, like my k2's do.. On3p's signature backbone is there, and you notice it within the first few turns on the skis.

Undertow, I think the 191 K108s, with the new hybrid radius sidecut will be money very well spent. Like a quicker more playful gunsmoke. K108's seemingly have the best edge hold I've ever tried from an On3p ski..

Still wondering about these while the custom sale is on.

Where do the K116 rank against the gunsmokes? Pretty similar? Blasting slush was so much damn fun -- which is what you have been saying about the K116s. They also did so well in recycled pow/mank.

I weigh 135lbs, i'm thinking that the kartel 108s are going to be to stiff. Maybe I should go with a softer, custom layup or an entirely different ski. What do you guys think?

You think they might be a little to short for a 5'11 guy? Honestly they are a womans ski but they do look to be the right amount of stiffness for me, might have to get them.

Cheeseburger deluxe and a gym membership. That’s what I think.
