The thing I love about this is that the dude with the microphone today looks a lot like Bill Murray's brother who played "Buster" in the movie. Super great.

If someone could make a jacket of those three things it would no doubt be the most popular and prized item in all of your closets.

    There are holiday douchebags?

How do they differ from regular douchebags?

By DSMs reckoning Talk Like a Pirate Day must be a holiday.

Hey boss do I get that day off as paid? Arrrrg Matey.

This morning Punxsutawney Phil scurried out of his little marmot hole and saw his shadow. 6 more weeks of winter???!!!! Not for our area. The Climate Prediction Center is showing ABOVE normal temperatures and NORMAL precipitation over the next month.

Portland uses a hedgehog because they are more authentic and accurate.

    It says spring is here.

If the groundhog sees his shadow, presumably because it's not cloudy and dark (i.e. sun?), he gets scared and runs back in his burrow indicating it will be another 6 weeks of winter.

If it's cloudy and dark and he doesn't see his shadow he hangs out in the dank weather and calls it Spring.

Silly groundhog. Shouldn't the opposite be true?
Local word is: it's rigged! All of the TV lights make him always see his shadow! It is VERY cloudy in these parts, yet: he saw his shadow!!!!

It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

you gotta wonder if phil is drugged.

I find it hard to believe being clawed or bit is not a concern if you're grabbing a groundhog.

It is a holiday in Punxsutawney - maybe not a federal or fully declared holiday by act of US Congress though. The TV lights story is pretty much regularly mentioned as an excuse if it turns out wrong. 103 to 17 was the count of shadow vs no-shadow before today. As for the accuracy-

Compared to local weather forecasts for snow or rain chances he is just as good as they are in predictions.

Do any of these groundhogs work at NOAA or NASA? Because it sure seems like they should.

When the hell did every other state get their own groundhog? I saw on the news this morning they have "Beau" here in Georgia (who according to this is the most accurate of em all), some wombat named Buckeye Chuck in Ohio and a whole mess of other weather predicting rats.

Is there big t-shirt sales money in this or something?

    Too early for flapjacks?

Apparently, Wisconsin has "Jimmy the Groundhog". If he doesn't see his shadow, he'll send a couple of beavers and a porcupine to mess you up.

And if the whole thing is based on whether or not the sun is out why do we need the groundhog at all?
