Autozone = expensive parts + poor quality. Napa is usually a better place imo IF you must have part same day.

The state of local auto parts stores is pretty terrible and getting worse. I used to have a Napa and Car Quest here and two small local stores that were very good. There is one local store that's not as good as it used to be and the others are gone so stuck with Advance and Auto Zone. Nearest Napa is ~20 miles away now I need to research what other options I have because AZ and Advance bug me for anything other than commodity type stuff.

Rock Auto ftw. Parts often arrive in 2 or 3 days even with the cheap shipping. I often plug parts numbers from Rock Auto into Amazon just to comparison shop. Sometimes Amazon does well on high volume stuff. Always use the 5% off discount code available with a quick search for Rock Auto.

It amazes me that you can usually get the top quality premium brand name aftermarket components for 40% cheaper than the cheapest junk generic parts they sell at local parts stores. Even heavy stuff like brake rotors. The difference almost always changes the equation enough that I end buying the premium parts online.

Autozone stores transactions under your phone number and the database doesn't expire unlike advanced Auto (2 year expiration and they print receipt on paper that is illegible after two years). Napa always requires original receipt here but it is a real receipt and they honor it). Still I think Autozone is best for warranty.

Also parts rental. The retail price they charge if you don't return it is outrageous and the hassle sucks. Check Rock or Amazon before renting might make more sense to buy. Ie my recent spring compressor purchase. Should have bought one many rentals ago. Same with things like pitman arm pullers. So useful, why rent?

Around here parts stores are popping up everywhere like banks. We are down to one locally owned Napa though. They are good people.

I like AutoZone for lifetime warranty stuff and parts that are heavy to ship, like brake rotors - if it's a part that is easy to get to and replace. If it's a PITA to replace, I'm more likely to seek out an OEM or name brand replacement part.

Rockauto for most everything else though. Amazon sometimes is cheaper if you get Prime shipping factored in, again because of heavy stuff. There's always a 5% discount on Rockauto too.

I 'bought' my spring compressors at autozone by not ever returning them.
Rock auto is good, but for German I usually got to fcpeuro, Pelican, ecstuninrg, and if rock auto doesn't have the right Toyota part, (ex only have bogus Cardone shit instead of aisin) I hunt around for oem, I haven't found the corresponding Toyota place that compares to fcpeuro. Just a bunch of random Toyota dealers with somewhat discounted parts. If someone knows the Toyota version of Pelican or fcpeuro, I want to know!

Lots of Aisin in stuff on Amazon.

I've done the same thing not returning rented tools marked up 2.5x the price of Amazon or Rock Auto. My mistake.

Same thing with Subaru dealers. I really lost it when my local Subaru dealer decided to build a new stealership location they started charging random amounts way above retail for parts. Bastards. These guys have been good to me.

Definitely Agree on fcs, ecs or Turner for the German stuff. Just finished putting on some Meyle control arms from fcstuning. Solid stuff, great price and speedy delivery. (Getting the inner ball joint off was a true bitch though). Trying some bargain tie-rods from 1a auto though.

Usually prefer online but sometimes impatience gets the better of me.

In AZones defense I did borrow a nice inner tie rod remover this week that made life much nicer. They loaner tool thing sees to have changed they process it as a sale and when they get it back they process it as s return and credit your account.

Btw- that fucking o2 was NG. Constant fault high voltage. Putting old one back in. At least that was just an intermittent fault.
Damn, we're in a tight spot!

Checked front end alignment on bimmer, slight toe in. So I adjusted that out. Adjusted the windshield washer nozzles so they all shoot in the right spot, tightened valve cover bolts, removed window tint. All on the e34.
Did a complete test of throttle position sensor on the Porsche both at the dme, (computer) and at the sensor for shits and giggles. Checks out.

Headers today. Need to tighten the passenger side cat attachment, but the old bolts came off the block surprisingly well after some pb blaster treatment.

SpeedTech had a black friday sale. I'm more focused on better sound, so any power will be a plus. They sent some soft bolts though, so I'm gonna get my mess cleaned up at a nearby shop. Very slight exhaust leak on one side connecting to the block.

I am Done with aluminum radiators.
I have loved them. I could not make the rig’s 22re motor overheat, midsummer A/C and all. My top speed was no longer limited by engine temperature.

This one is the 2nd failure in 18 months. Not repairable. New in April.
I did pressure test it to be sure it wasn’t something that I screwed up. Bubbles from both top corners.

My local shop (Yoda1) is solidly standing behind his warranty, again. Nick changed me over to an all metal CSF dual core copper unit. I hope it works nearly as well as the aluminum ones.

I need to find something else in his shop. Good guy.

    Nice. Calipers look good.

I did some fender flare mounting point repair for my 80 series. And here is a test fit.

I need some of those fasteners to attach a flare myself. Is that a Toyota-specific thing or can I just get them at autozone?

I think they are Toyota specific, but no reason you can't run em. I bought flare attachment hardware online from oem parts source. Com. Here is that front one properly attached with new trim.

Yes, exactly....same here with two failures in less than a year. Second one I took extra caution to rubber mount it thinking that was the issue with the first. It seems like there's a market for those fucking aluminum radiators that's mainly people who aren't using their vehicle and want something cool looking for idling in the parade.

I always wondered why people with no automotive repair skills (like me) lift the hood when something goes wrong. Had a CE light go on yesterday. Turned off the engine a couple times without help. Went to a local shop, parked, looked under the hood, mainly to make sure the coolant and oil were ok, and closed it. The shop couldn't even check for me. When I drove away the light wast off and stayed off. It's like a doctor laying on hands--looking under the hood brings comfort to the afflicted.
(Another shop checked--O2 sensor going out, which always seems to be the problem with this Subaru. I hope to make it to spring and replace this '05.)
