But really, The Netherlands is on my short list of places to visit. Gezellig seems nice. It's like a single word to describe the comfortable feeling after eating on Thanksgiving where everyone is relaxing. Except it happens on the regular.

I've never been myself but my kid absolutely loves Amsterdam, I want to go check it out.

It's beautiful and to my uncultured ass it's rich with culture (I grew up with the NYC museum set so I'd say pretty good). Wife and I honeymooned there. Great stuff at Anne Frank house, van Gogh museum etc. Arcitecture. I think raising kids there would provide a much richer experience than anything in the states.

And yeah Holland is "old school" I guess...it's all the Netherlands now, but appears some old timers still use Holland and others could be offended by it. Whatevs...you all get the idea.

    Tokyo.

I've been lucky to have traveled the world for fun and for me it blows everything away. From the instant my wife and I first set foot on the ground in Tokyo we knew we'd move there yesterday.

I'd settle for another boat in the BVI one day but it does get a little much after a season believe it or not (as others have pointed out).
I still call it The Jake.

I like Tokyo a lot but I wouldn't want to live there. My daughter spent a semester there, she enjoyed the country but she's been in no hurry to go back. She's dying to go back to Vietnam though. I've been a few places in Asia and enjoyed both going and coming home.

The wife and I were just there. It felt a lot like Portland if Portland was all grown up and had real culture instead of new money hipsters. Lots of cool museums and galleries, good food, diverse, cool architecture, etc. The weed thing was pretty underwhelming TBH coming from a legal state here in the US.

    Better skiing than Holland.

    Difficult to argue with that.

Yeah I can see the weed thing being underwhelming coming from a legal us state, it's kinda just a bonus really. The culture turned me on the most I think. What my kids could be exposed to, the learning. The easy travel. So what's a 3 hr plane ride get you in the states? CA? WA? KY? 3 hours from Netherlands? You see my point. Easier said than done though. Maybe someday.

    Preferably Norway, Switzerland, France, Italy.

Real world where I speak English and need to apply for residency based on my education and professional licenses?

I'd like to see how long I could stand Argentina before the A factor drove me bananas. Not sure I'll ever top the $55 appendectomy, though.

Lots of geography I'd like to visit, a few cultures as well. But to live? I can't see myself choosing another country and province than where I am at. Maybe the AK panhandle, just to fit in the theme, but somehow I doubt my ladies would be accompanying me unless the term 'country' no longer held any meaning.

I’d move to Minnesotaland, buy a used Sonata, eat over cooked utility grade meat and pursue fat soccer moms. I’d dream of skiing real mountains and eventually fade to a disgruntled old man, watching re-runs of Law & Order, all day in my boxers and wife beater.

That's what I've heard time and time again from friends who have lived there for significant amounts of time and moved back to the states.
Similar situation: Some friends lived on St John, and moved back to Florida because of this sort of crap. Husband got ignored, but wife, a cute 30-ish redhead, got hassled everywhere she went: Pulled over for “being pretty”; couldn’t ride her roadie without being stopped several times to “talk”. Shit gets old.

Lmao at the people in here thinking Amsterdam is cultured.

Talk about one of the most touristy cities in all of Europe.

I’d go to Australia, NZ, Denmark in that order

Spent an afternoon in Amsterdam when I was 17. It was fun and all but I've never been back some 30 or so years later. Legal hash was mind-blowing at the time, ho hum in retrospect. Window shopping in the RLD was fun. Not into pay to play. In late February it was cold, dark, and miserable, like VT but without any snow. And it was filthy. There was dogshit everywhere.

Might be worth revisiting. Coming straight from Portland, we were commenting how there were tons of dogs, but a distinct lack of dog shit, which was a nice change.

Fuck that. I had a really good meal of traditional Dutch food there that was awesome.

Very no frills and stick to your ribs.

It’s not Paris in the food sense, but I don’t see that as a bad thing.
