I think Ferrari were worried about the collision with Stroll on the cool down lap (which was ridiculous) having caused gearbox damage about apparently it's been given the ok.

    Scary accident...

Haas are trying to sue the circuit owners for $750k.

A problem that in the Bernie days would have just been dealt with by an envelope of used bank notes.

Ah, the good old days when men were men and drivers died regularly (actually mostly before Bernie's day, or more accurately before Sid's arrival.)

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

    Kubica deal delayed by paperwork?

Kubica's return nears, but there are 'i's to dot and 't's to cross

"Although conversations are ongoing with Kubica, it is still yet to be finally decided who will replace Massa. We will make an announcement when we have something to announce but nothing is planned this weekend in Abu Dhabi."

That is the Williams statement ahead of Robert Kubica driving in the post-Abu Dhabi test for the team. The test, on Tuesday, will be his third for Williams and although the 2018 deal has still to be confirmed, our understanding is that he will, in fact, be racing for the team next year, pending the expected resolution of contract issues. This would mark his full comeback seven years after injuring his arm in a rallying accident.

The delay is believed to be about the structure of his payments, and this is almost certainly linked to the fact that an insurance pay-out for the ending of his career will now have to be paid back. It’s an unusual but understandable complication – and similar policies played a part in the decisions of both Stirling Moss and Didier Pironi in not returning to F1 after injury.

Assuming the deal is eventually done, Kubica’s comeback will represent by far the longest anyone has attempted a serious F1 career comeback (although Jan Lammers did make a two-race return to F1 in 1992, having last raced in the category in 1982). Niki Lauda was absent for just two years before making the comeback in 1982 that eventually led to a third world title in ’84. But combined with the extent of Kubica’s injury, nothing of this scale of comeback has been attempted before. If he succeeds, it will surely go down as one of the most remarkable sporting comebacks of all time. Both Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso have gone on record as believing Kubica to be a special talent, beyond the norm. His (first) F1 career ran from mid-2006 to the end of 2010. Back in 2012, Toto Wolff said, “When I look at what Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean did in the Lotus this year, I am convinced had Robert not had his accident, he’d have been world champion in that car.”

Williams hopes both his talent behind the wheel and the intense level of focus he brings will give them a competitive boost. It is likely, however, that he will miss selected Friday P1 sessions as the team hopes to run a junior driver for several of these. Formula 2 driver Nicholas Latifi has been mentioned in connection with this.

Completed my first year of watching racing and while the F1 cars are more impressive than indycars most of the indycar races were more entertaining. The competition was much better in indycar as there seemed to be more parity between the cars, but dam are the F1 cars quick especially in the corners. It will be interesting to see how ABC/ESPN does coverage with F1.

funny. when I started the thread, coverage was on SPEED. things change, wish Vettel had won, Hammy is kind of a tool , but much respect, I guess. Good on Bottas for holding him off

Another yawn race. I will miss the NBC guys . F1 will enter a new era for sure next season when Liberty puts its stamp on it. Hopefully more parity next year.

I think I watched that one.
Hunt partied like a rock star if I remember correctly.
Back when video games were coming out for computers I raced F1 in a 60's car.
Had the feedback steering wheel and brake, gas, clutch, shifter setup.
So much fun .Those early cars were so sketchy. Good memories!

Me too. I hated the US coverage with Hobbs and Matchett on the old Speedvision channel when I first moved here but they've grown on me with their two old farts chatting while a bit drunk act.

If as rumored ABC is just importing the Sky UK feed then there will be a dramatic change in style coming with far more upbeat, professional no budget spared coverage. Which might take some getting used to.

Bit sad watching the NBC guy's farewell.

Yea, I`m not happy about it. Me being older I like the familiarity of things including broadcasters. Jeff Gordon was seen at some of the races this year. Would not be surprised if ABC throws a Nascar guy in the mix for demographics. Seems like NBC was trying to tie in Nascar with this series a few times. I hope Alonzo gets the the horsepower he needs next season with the new engine builder.

I feel he has the talent to compete for the championship.
He seems to be lacking a engine right now.
I liked how he handled himself at the Indy 500 also.
Vettal did some stupid shit this season. And he acted like a little bitch a few times.
Not a fan of that crap.
Botas is a little to reserved for me.
Richconin might be lacking that killer instinct right now.
I know I butchered the names, heh....
Verstaffen should be competing for the championship if Red Bull gives him a reliable car.
    Excited for next season.

My opinion is only from 1 full season of following this.
I am sure there is alot of crap I don't know about.
If Alonzo turns out to be a little bitch I will throw his ass in the fire too.

Apparently Kubica ran the Williams at Tuesday and Wednesday's tire tests with a red rear light rather than the green "rookie" light that he'd have to use if he didn't have a current super licence. Teams apply for their drivers super licence. He wouldn't have needed one if this was "just" a test.

So it sounds like he has signed a 2018 contract already?

    Hot take alert :

Is this the thread for F1 Jongs only or is Indycar (real OW racing ) discussion permitted here?

Between the new logo , boring tilkedromes, the halo , no passing , cars that sound like Vaccum cleaners and vast competitive disparity, constrained tech development (compared to the halcyon years of the 90s- mid 2000s) I’m shocked people still enjoy F1

As a lifelong student of Motorsport (runs in family , grandad used to be one of the execs of Hulman and co who own Indianapolis motor speedway) I still watch, but indycar is undoubtedly the best and most pure form of racing on the planet , followed by Aussie V8 supercars

Indycar is pure spec racing similar to Nascar. A pass at Indy isn't worth a dime anymore. No passing on the road courses in Indycar either.

    1. Indycar isn’t spec. You can’t be spec with 2 engine manufacturers and aero kits (albeit no aero kits in 2018 due to the badass Cart-Esque new chassis. Honestly I’ll trade the new chassis which are now the most aesthetic OW chassis in the world over aero kits)

    2. The Indy 500 has been revitalized due to the increased comeptitiion and action - I would know I’ve been to every 500 since 1995 . 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 all had late race duels that tank in history amongst the greatest finishes of all time like 1991, 2006, 1986 and 1981

    3. I will give you the aero kits hurt the racing on road and streets and short ovals but there is still more action and passing in one indycar road and street race than there is in 1/2 of the F1 season

I used to love F1 as much as CART and IRl before the split . I was at every USGP
At indy with my entire family and even enjoyed Michelin Gate, I had Ferraro, McLaren Mercedes and Sauber flags adorning my childhood bedroom so I’m saying this as a real fan. F1 blows nowadays and is only getting worse as long as Liberty media is running the show

By your measurements F1 has nearly always blown. Certainly since you were noticing it from at the earliest the early 90's (Sauber Childhood flag) - disparity, tight regulations, lack of passing, tires, modern circuits.. etc.

In the short time Liberty Media have owned the sport they appear to be doing everything possible to change the mess that Bernie and Jean Todt allowed to happen.. Putting Ross Brawn in charge the most important change.

Engine reg changes are being negotiated to address the over complexity and to attract more manufacturers. And leveling the financial playing field from front to back of grid. They're also dragging the sport into 21st century regarding media and web coverage.

It was a good season even though Mercedes and Hamilton's dominance continues, it was reduced. Ferrari came back strong from season opener and Red Bull improved throughout the year.

Also the current field of drivers is probably as good as it's ever been.

The only reason to watch the Indy 500 was to see Alonso make all the regular have beens and never will bes look very average.

halcyon years of the 90s- mid 2000
When Schumacher won 5 consecutive Championships in dominant Ferrari on bespoke tires?

And drivers of such small caliber as Damon Hill and Jacques Villenueve could win Championships in nearly unbeatable Renault Williams cars

Alonso is arguably the greatest driver in the world. Put him in a ride with the best team in the paddock and give him 3 weeks of practice and he will be a contender to win.

For the record, Scott Dixon would dust pretty much anyone in F1 if put in a Force India or Renault LOL!!

Indy Car has sucked balls ever since George killed it in 1996 (?). CART was much better while it lasted.

F1, always has and always be the most cutting edge racing on the planet, period.
