    Anybody own a drone?

A neighbor was learning how to use his in my parking lot, had to check it out. What an awesome piece of tech. This one was a DJI, about a thousand bucks. Has collision avoidance (will not fly into things, just stops and hovers), 4 mile range (!), and knows when the battery is running low, so will just fly back home and land before that happens. Folds up into a neat package when not in use. Little noisy. Have no idea what they're good for besides photography, but, what a fun toy.

Buddy of mine has had every iteration of DJI released so far. Currently running a dji3 dji2 and a mavic pro he just got. Boy that one's small.

When we head out camping (car) he will bring it. Do shots down slot canyons, campsite flyovers, and car follows. He makes some good videos. It's neat but I personally have better was to spend my meager earnings. Like said cool toy.

I have a neighbor who has one, along with the FAA license you're supposed to get for commercial use.
First time he pointed the camera at me, I flipped him off and he hasn't flown it around the hood since.

I had a DJI Phantom for awhile and just switched over to a GoPro Karma. I mostly fly those for photography and video related things.

I've also had some cheap (20-50 bucks) drones that I've just flown around without a camera on them and those have been really fun to fly and not so expensive that if you crash them it's a big deal. I find the more expensive drones I'm too worried about crashing or losing to really push the flying part.

They're illegal to fly in DC, so no. My son bought himself one of the cheap ones and got busted by a cop while flying it at a local school field. Had to beg the guy not to take it away, but then promptly crashed it while fucking around in his room. Moron .

Guy I work with has the commercial FAA license. He no longer does "normal" Network TV and just hires himself and his fleet out to anyone looking for aerial footage. His main clientele are farmers.

Yup. all of DC is restricted airspace. Of course you can own them, but you can't fly them without very special permission which is nearly impossible to get.

    Here you go:

    DC No Drone Zone
The National Capital Region is governed by a Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) within a 30-mile radius of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, which restricts all flights in the greater DC area.
The SFRA is divided into a 15-mile radius inner ring and a 30-mile radius outer ring.
Flying an unmanned aircraft within the 15-mile radius inner ring is prohibited without specific FAA authorization.
Flying a UAS for recreational or non-recreational use between 15 and 30 miles from Washington, D.C. is allowed under these operating conditions:
Aircraft must weigh less than 55 lbs. (including any attachments such as a camera)
Aircraft must be registered and marked (if it is not operated exclusively under the Special Rule for Model Aircraft, pending NOTAM change)
    Fly below 400 ft.
    Fly within visual line-of-sight
    Fly in clear weather conditions
    Never fly near other aircraft
The airspace around Washington, D.C. is more restricted than in any other part of the country. Rules put in place after the 9/11 attacks establish "national defense airspace" over the area and limit aircraft operations to those with an FAA and Transportation Security Administration authorization. Violators face stiff fines and criminal penalties.

Yeah that sucks. I guess it's not surprising that they would lock it all down more than a normal city

So what are my property rights directly above my house? I'd love to 12ga one right out of the sky. Outside of this situation, I'd just use my normal, "hey asshole, please exercise a little awareness and realize that your sharing this space with others who don't appreciate your behavior" technique.

Pretty sure unloading your 12ga on a drone in the middle of a city is frowned upon.

The FAA controls airspace above a few hundred feet or something most places.

Don't have time to look it up right now but I think there was a court case recently dealing with exactly that issue. I'm in the shoot it down if it's over my property camp but I suspect that attitude may put me in the minority around these parts.

    a. a live in the opposite of a city. unincorporated county land.
    b. I'm not talking about the legality of discharging a firearm, that's a criminal issue.
    c. not a couple hundred feet. more like hovering outside 2nd floor windows.

Its unlikely that I'd shoot down a done with a 12ga in my neighborhood. I'm just interested to know if I have any property rights vertically above my land.

This is not an abstract - i saw a realtor/developer jump out of his BMW and launch his drone from the truck. After watching his antics and observing his totally awesome "mountain casual" outfit, I somewhat nicely requested that he not fly above or near my home or property. I'd like to know how the law reads before I take the next step.

Seems to be a legal gray area that is probably different state to state.

Seems the current reading is they have to be about 400ft or more above the ground. Level with your 2nd floor windows? Obliterate the fucker if you're allowed to discharge a shotgun on your property. If anyone bitches say you were shooting at a squirrel and missed.

Or throw a roll of toilet paper at it.

    Anybody own a drone?

Someone had a good arm...that's not an easy shot ::: moving target in open space with no visual anchors to work off of

I was under the impression that you could not fly over private property that isn't yours. The gray area being what you can look at while still being directly over your own property

And yes there is such a thing as air rights tied to property... just depends on local law

Man, what a great throw! Shoulda been more cheering.
It's a paper-roll from a cash register, in the comments.

I own about 14 FPV(first person view) quadcopters.......but since not a single one can fly autonomously they are not drones.

Super fun and addicting to learn how to fly.

that a video grabbed from live feed, I need to get a Gopro after i smashed my HD cam into a tree flying.

I have no interest in owning an AP drone like a Mavic or karma do to how poorly they fly. My goal is to build a up a rig that can be flown FPV with an HD camera to chase action sports. I ll be much more nimble(and the build will cost much less) than any thing from best buy.

technically no one owns the air space. You can fly over any private property you want.
