    HEY HUTASH...VESTIBULAR SYNDROME

Last night Carly the GSD started to get up and then fell. She was having a difficult time walking, and seemed disoriented. Trouble seemed more with back legs. Was markedly better this morning, but still having difficulty walking, especially turning around, and still seemed disoriented. Got her to the vet, and based on a number of things, including sudden onset followed by quick improvement, nystagmus, negative neuro signs on back legs, tilting of head to one side consistently, she dx'd vestibular syndrome.

No particular treatment, other than instructions to be careful with her on stairs, slick surfaces, and to let her adjust to the problems, which she thought Carly would, given her fairly rapid and significant improvement from last night to this morning/today. She did up her pain meds, adding gabapentin (slowly) to the existing rimadyl.

Anyway, my vet is really good, and I have no reason to question her conclusion, but I figured since I had access to a dentist who pretends to be a vet over the innerwebs, I might as well get your thoughts.

    Thanks.

Your vet is good, nothing to add, other then that it takes time to recover. I tell people three days to three weeks. Sounds like a typical old dog vestibular syndrome.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

My parents' old dog just had this diagnosis a week ago and she has gradually done better and better each day. She was just about back to normal when I saw her Friday. Hope your pup clears up fast too.

Carly snoozing on the cool grass. Tough day for the old girl. Hopefully the balance thing will pass.

Looks like some mags I've seen after some Mammoth minis. Nothing worse then the spinning room.

Add some cerenia for nausea if necessary...good stuff.

My old dog had this and got better after maybe 10 days. She was 16 at the time.

Same thing happened with my old lab, made me think she had a stroke. Got better after a few days. I had to use a towel under her midsection to help her walk the first few days, but she got better. Head tilt kinda stayed though. Good luck, hope she gets going again.

She is slowly getting better. Rapid eye movement has pretty much ended, balance is better. Fingers crossed
