Is there a more permanent solution than duct tape for leaky boots?
I got some new boots and really like them, but they are wring-out-my-socks leaky and therefore freezing cold. I had wet cold feet in 50 degree weather yesterday, which is very unusual. I am normally all day comfortable in single digits in other boots. Duct tape helped today, but the lifespan isn't usually great.
Boot glove is the only other idea I have, but I'd like to know it's the answer before I spend $30 to look like the type of guy that wears a boot glove.
Ugh so, after a few times of try something different and my boot feels good for a day and then back to the same problem of heel lift, I've gotten to the point of a butterfly volume reducer around the heel, a new footbed, and a shim on my shin to take up all the extra volume in my boot but I've come to the realization I've got a shell pretty much one size too big.
Laterally I'm bomber, but I've got an extra finger of length. I realized what happened is I bought these boots when I was 17 and likely sized up in anticipation of foot growth that didn't materialize, it wasn't a big problem until I got about 30 days in the boot when the liner got packed in.
So anyways until I trash these shells and get new ones, what do ya'll think my best bet is?
I think the volume reducer and the shin shim are going to work pretty good but I pretty much expect these to pack out about every 30 days and then need to replace them, is this the best I can do until I trash the shell?
When I go for a new liner can I size up on the liner to try and take up some extra volume or should I just keep throwing some volume reducers on the liner?
you dont need liners that are smaller, you need boot shells that are smaller (and maybe narrower as well)
please read the first post in this thread, about shell fitting a boot, and see if you need BOTH shorter AND narrower
just suck it up now, and get boots that fit, why suffer longer, when you KNOW what is wrong and how to fix it.
Socks go inside. Gloves go outside.
Shell fit laterally is as I said good, have a Salomon Quest Max which is on the 97mm last and I actually need a punch out on my first metatarsal that I messed up playing soccer.
The only thing is length, which obviously means I need a new shell. But really I'm just tryna do as good a job as possible until $$$ comes together for that.
If I can keep throwing volume reducers in there for $10 (or free if I go to the shop I bought my boots) and it makes things 75% better it's worth it.
These leak excessively IMO; There are visible gaps from deformity after some shell work.
I'll double up with boot gloves and duct tape until I can get back to my workshop and see about some silicon. I think inverting the overlap is out because of the deformities. Thanks.
I'll see you two on team boot glove
New or different brand of boot. You in a Lange boot??- they seem to be talked about as leaking most often. I don't think I could put up with toe leak on boots.
Otherwise, silicon sealer if it is an area that is not around the toe overlap that opens each time you put the boot on or off?
Last year come end of March or beginning of April, I found boot glove deals on Amazon sale for about 50% off.

I think Lange is French for "leaks."
Ohps, yup 98 indeed. Good to know on the width drop, I'll probably spend the rest of the season in this shell but see what I can do towards dropping a shell size. Next time I'm in the shop I'll ask if I can try out the smaller shell size and check whether dropping just one size will make it work.
VB socks over the liners. Sure the sweat stays in, but it's not more than the water that leaks in.
Liner question mostly, but seemed fitting to put it here rather than start a new thread.
I picked up a pair of Titans second-hand last year that were in pretty mint shape. Shell fit is pretty good with between 1-1.5 fingers spacing. I've been fairly happy with them, but as I had heard going into it, the stock liners are apparently not that great. The biggest issue I'm having is that they don't keep my feet warm. I also just put in my custom footbeds from my alpine boot, and it feels a little tight on the top of my foot now, but with a molded liner I'm really not that worried.
I know people love Power Wraps, but I don't want to kill my ROM on an already stiff touring boot. Also worried that Intuition states right on their website that Power Wraps are not the best choice for custom footbeds.
Dreamliners, Pro Tour, Luxury?
I filled out the form online through Intuition, just thought people might have other experiences to share.
get a thinner intuions and you will have more room in the boot (anda MAYBE room for a footbed too) you CAN use footbeds in ANY boot, but you dont HAVE to
so a thin liner, that is med to stiff, with a rear hinge point should be fine?
