We do, although we haven't really figured out how we would handle this. Thus far, the likelihood of something happening to both of us, but not our daughter has been pretty minuscule.

Not to be morbid or anything, but if you ever drive somewhere as a family and a major car crash would happen, would not be the first time that the 2 adults in the front could sustain more injuries and could be killed while the passengers in the rear of the vehicle could have a higher chance of surviving. No lawyer, but it is good that you are finally having the discussion and you had better make your wishes known if you do not want to leave it up to a court and Orphans judge to decide. The last choice if a court is involved would probably be good friends in the local you are in over Grandparents, Aunt/Uncle, etc. without a will and designation of your wishes.

The whole discussion just kind of came up on my radar and I'm having a fair amount of anxiety about it.

Serious discussion probably needs to happen with your spouse and immediate family, no matter how close or far they live away.

^ totally. There's less risk of a problem with us flying back to NY than driving to the Broadmoor, which was the first idea... But it was the idea of the two of us getting on a plane that brought it to mind. I'm one of the more rational people around (not always in a good way) but this is absolutely the epitome of irrationality. Just glad we're getting it squared away.

Parents typically celebrate when their youngest child goes off to college. Suddenly becoming a parent of a 12 yo girl in mourning seems like a rough transition.

Our close friends went through this exact situation. He was a quiet kid to begin with so he just stayed really quiet, but became a brother. Frankly it all worked out, and he's attending Carnegie Mellon this year.

I (we) struggle with this. We set up our will a few years ago (before a ski trip) ironically. And now I'm struggling again as we ar looking at an international trip for our 10th anniversary. Granted we have just as good a chance of getting taken out for good, taking uber across town, but long distance travel makes you think more.
We really have no ideal family we want to leave our child with. Right now her guardian is located in a bad town in a shitty state with shitty education prospects. They are family and my daughter loves them but their values are a lot more conservative than ours.
Our 2nd in line choice is not family, but friends who more progressive and are in a better town in the same shitty state, my daughter has never met them. At this point we don't have close enough friends where we live that we could ask to take on this responsibility.

Yeah, it's tough... we're lucky to have made a couple of really good friends here. If we hadn't, I'm not sure what we'd be doing... Possibly moving to Germany, all things considered.

My wife and I found some common ground on this yesterday... We're going to talk to the two families here and also the brother in Germany, the idea being that there would be some flexibility in what happens immediately, and then my daughter would have the option to go the Germany whenever she felt comfortable in doing so. Depending on what comes out of our discussions this week, we'll name the primary guardian and that person will be responsible for taking control of the situation and guiding my daughter through the first days/weeks/months, and eventually presenting the option of moving to DE if she didn't know if was there already... So far, I feel as comfortable with that idea as any we've discussed so far... We'll see how these talks work out this week and go from there.

^ I agree, although it's not like my daughter doesn't know her german relatives... But the list of differences is pretty long, and I'd think in the wake of something as traumatic as losing your parents, one would be inclined to keep as much the same as possible. But I can also imagine her choosing to live there if given the opportunity. I think that's the biggest thing is that I wouldn't want her to feel as though she were being forced to leave. I just want her to have the time and space to deal with things as she's inclined to... It'll be interesting to see how this next week comes together.
