I was driving home today from the 303 and traffic EB was very heavy with that lane sitting empty. Seems weird...
ROLL TIDE ROLL
I was driving back from Jones Pass trail head on Friday and of course they had 70 down to 1 lane at Idaho Springs. Saw some tool box with a police escort passing everybody in the CLOSED express lane. Wonder what kind of ticket he got for that one.
Truth. So much truth.
I drove I70 for years and years for work (and play), and no matter what, if the sign had something to say, there was inevitably a slow-down. It's retarded. The lights are bright enough to cause eye pain in a snowstorm anyway. But whoever is in charge needs to minimize wording to one screen only, none of that two-screen long sentence shit. People slow down so they can read it all, hence the backups. It's fucktarded CDOT does not recognize and understand this.
It's especially aggravating when the message is about something that will happen a couple days in the future.
I don't care 85 in Castlerock will be closed Thur at 5am when it's Monday.
Right lane closed yesterday while the toll lane was sitting wide open. They might as well change the red X to a big middle finger.
^ It's cute that this is proving to be some kind of epiphany for everyone... why spend $4B fixing the road when you can spend $75M building a lane that no one's allowed to use? #coloradonative
^ There is a cap of how many days it can be open. That's coming down from the interstate feds, not CDOT. I imagine they've got those days scheduled.
EB 70 closed at Avon due to a trucker crashing in to people and causing a hazmat situation. How many is that now?

Then it was dumbassery from inception. Inconvenience the travelling public for years so that you can build a once in a while prescheduled toll lane that will only benefit those willing to throw fistfuls of $s at it.
Edit: I looked over CDOT's information on the project and they only refer to "peak times" and never to preset or a limited # of days. Where did you see that they disclosed that the # of days is to be limited?
A bunch of assholes were driving the lane around Dumont to Idaho Springs today on the way back, while the other two lanes were going 15-30 mph. So fucking dangerous and obviously no one is enforcing the closure...
CSP said they wouldn't patrol it because they couldn't do any enforcement safely even if they did. Would think that the system that assesses tolls could hand out fines as well, but that's probably a little "out there" for CDOT.
Just learned today that if you were thinking Your Way was fucking with the road intentionally, you're probably right. Apparently, CDOT signed a contract with them that provides zero clauses for performance guarantees and enforcement, and that that YW employees have been more or less instructed to exact retribution for CDOT criticism through unnecessary closures and other mismanagement. It was mentioned that it took CDOT a year to convince YW not to only work between 8am and 5pm... I guess it hadn't been stipulated that YW would try to strategize around traffic patterns... So all those 9am and 5pm road closures were some obnoxious combination of intentional malfeasance and general laziness. Nice job CDOT.

I'm quickly becoming scared that when I start driving I-70 in a couple weeks it's going to be more of a disaster than it's ever been. Hopefully I'm just paranoid. I can't wait for March.

72 days a year since it's not officially a lane.
Why the fuck would they even build this "lane" if they can't properly patrol it during the times people will poach it?! That is some seriously stupid shit.
there was some creek erosion work on that E stretch after US40, the accident shoulder still exists with the closed toll lane in the blizzards, now it will be a real toll lane for summer madness..
It will be open more in the nice weather for sure and CSP will patrol it then. Winter patrol is safety minded, not being dickbags and stalking everyone just trying to survive these roads.
After reading the above, someone needs to go to the media, and go to the Governor about CDOT's contracts with road sign guys...... beyond these past holiday rush retarded closures, I have seen a guy stop on I70, get out of his truck with a sledgehammer and destroy the highway overpass. Contractors must be evil scum and CDOT has been missing weeding them out.
Terje was right.
