So after being severely limited in what I could do for the last three years, I am finally able to run again. I didn't think it was going to be this difficult. I can run for two minutes and then start walking. I walk for a few minutes and then run again. I've been doing this for the last week. Being laid up I put on 40 lbs. I bike commute to work most days, hit the stairstepper or run for lunch, and am pushing 60. Do I continue along with the run/walk method or is there something else I can do to improve. Flame away.

There is nothing wrong with run-walk.It is interval training. And 60 is a hard push.Give yourself credit

Yeah, it sucks getting old. I am about to turn 57, so can relate. The secret to getting old is patients. What used to happen quickly when younger just takes longer, from healing, recovery and getting an erection;-). The good news is is that everything lasts longer. I actually have more stamina, just less over all physical output. I can't crank on a climb like I used to, but I can go higher and longer.

I am now running half marathons easily, but not that long ago I was running a 1/4 mile, then walking two. If you aren't using a heart rate monitor, get one. Start in the lower heart zones and work up slowly. Some great info in at the website Big Steve linked earlier in this thread.

Yesterday I finished the 20th annual McDonald Forest 50K (my 18th Mac finish). Tough course this year, 7100' verts and hot, but no Mac mud. It's my favorite foot race of all time, a fine test of endurance running, great people and always a good party.

I only run if I'm being chased. Now competitive speed walking to get a better spot in line I will do
I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

That's awesome Steve! What was your time? I can't even imagine 50k with 7k of vert.

Thanks. My time was nearly 2 hours slower than my personal best at The Mac 14 years ago. For me it's all about getting to the finish line before the cutoff, not being DFL and having a good day out there. I succeeded, finishing 35+ places ahead of DFL and had a great day. The RDs promise that they will hold the event at least two more years, so I will have an opportunity to earn the 20-year finisher urn.

    Nice work, Steve!

I passed on Promise Land. Had no desire to keep running for it. Dusted off the mountain bike and have been riding a lot. Getting the running bug back, though.

I think this will be my next long "race". I missed the cutoff, which is crazy because they had less than 40 runners last year, but I think I'll make it off the waitlist. I may have to bribe the RD.

After mocking the brand for a couple years, I tried on the Hoka Challenger for the hell of it and was shocked at how connected to my foot it felt. Trigger pulled, and a 15-mile test run yesterday indicates strongly that I've found my Snoqualmie-to-Stevens/wonderland shoe. VERY nice.

Wife Anita did the Wonderland solo in Hokas.

Planning to do Snoq-to-Stevens in one push? Why not N-to-S?

Yes, one push. We haven't decided on where to start/finish, though ending at Snoqualmie means quicker access to beer and corn dogs. Any insight on why N-->S?

N-to-S = 1,000' less vert ascent, nice runnable finish from Katwalk to Snoq Pass, gets the bullshit of hiking over the ski area/under the power lines out of the way

That makes shitloads of sense. I'm very familiar with the PCT from Spectacle south, which will be nice whilst my brain is mush.

Did Anita do wonderland as an overnight?

Anita fastpacked the Wonderland in 4 days last September as a consolation trip after I had to bail out of a planned 8-day high route due to an injury. Some of my ultra buds have done the WT in one push, including the two chicks who set the supported FKT (<24 hours). An ultra couple friends did it in around 36 hours with a bivi. Doing it in 3 days with friends setting up two car camps would be the ticket. After Labor Day, of course. Busy trail, in places not the wilderness experience, but some outstanding views along the way.

Current plan is a three-day fast pack given all the goddamn up and downs on that thing.

Leaving Kona today after logging 1500 miles on bike and 500 running in last 4 months.

Shaved 15min off of flat 10k average to 40min at 80%. Shaved 25 minutes off of my 10mile loop w/ 2000ft vert 1:45 to 1:20.

Also went from 230lb to 200. Feeling pretty good. First race tomorrow, 8.5k with 4300 vert. Hoping training in the heat has been worth something...
