Another glorious Sunday morning run yesterday! I'm really getting spoiled by all this nice weather. Once I made the last big turn I shut the music off and just let the birds chirping carry the tune all the way home. The miles just melted away.

    Is it still winter?

Ran about an hour yesterday in the snow along the Highline. It was so beautiful and quiet out despite the blowing snow. 6" in some spots with more like 10-12" in most areas and I put in the only set of tracks for about 3/4 of the run.

Any of you other front rangers get out yesterday to play in the snow?

No snow this year (Sat, 3/19) on the Chuckanut 50km course outside B-ham. I ran sweep with 5 others. Sweeping is a PITA when there's lots of flagging to remove. My ultramarathon finish #86 in the books. McDonald Forest 50K on May 14. Legs still cooked from Chuckyerguts sweep, gonna be painful skiiing this weekend. I'm an old fuck.

Didn't get out yesterday and am jonesing to get out today. Was without power for most of the day and spent all my time dealing with that. Stuff is melting quick though. Roads should be good to go by this afternoon. Gonna try to sneak out for at least a few miles.

Did 8.5 on Sunday. Felt decent. Have had some weird pain on the side of knee. Got about 4 weeks til the half. Just want to hold up until then.

ETA: snow runs can be downright amazing.

Seems to be outside. Right at the knee. Sharp-ish. Feels fine during the run, but I'll get it afterwards doing dishes, walking around the house, up and down stairs, etc.

Have been trying to be diligent about stretching as well. Using the stick to roll out the calves and quads.

Might be an ITB issue. If so, stretching might not be enough. (Stretching never helped when I've had ITB issues but YMMV.) OTOH, I was helped by switching from a less blocky "corrective" straight lasted shoe to a more nimble curved lasted shoe. YMMV of course. I am thankful that I haven't had ITB issues for years.

Got that right. At 2 different points during my run I was like, man I'm not sure I can do this. But then I got over it and just kept on pushing. Turning the music off helped I think. Just let me find my groove and settle into it without constantly having different songs with different beats subliminally making me tweak my tempo. Either way, it sure was fun to be out in that kind of crazy swirling storm.

Nice, Cruiser. Some of my most memorable runs have been in the snow, though I've never run in more than 6". I went out for a midnight snow run in February just as a storm was picking up cause I needed a snow run fix. My wife thought I was losing it.

I've been seeing a PT that isn't a big proponent of stretching. He's not opposed to it, but more sees it as wasted effort in a lot of cases. He's big on manual manipulation in sessions and foam roller, stick, and LAX ball at home...in addition to strengthening. I was skeptical, but haven't noticed any detriment from cutting stretching out of my PT routine. The exception is my hamstrings. My lower back gets tight if I don't stretch them.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Forgot. Had a conference in Palm Springs. I found some really nice trails near the hotel to explore. I only brought shoes and shorts. Next time I want to pack some gear and take the Skykine trail to the top of the tram.

^^^Nice. I had a nice 10K run through Jumbo Rocks in J-Tree. A little chilly at sunrise, but it was a nice run, and a challenge to avoid the cactus and cholla. Fortunately too cool for any of the six species of rattlesnakes in the park.

Got ten glorious miles in this morning before the kids soccer games got started. I'm pretty darn slow but it sure is a pleasure to be rambling along the trail with the flowers blooming and the birds chirping.

Hell yeah, jogging and birds. Wife and I waddled trails for just shy of 4 hours yesterday, heard the usual suspects, e.g., Pacific Wren, White-crowned Sparrow, Varied Thrush, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Song Sparrow, etc. 113 minute urban jog at low tide today, saw FOY Pigeon Guillemot.

In mid-November I was trail running out side my 'burb and got attacked by a dog - off leash despite strict leash laws - and got knocked off trail badly and dislocated my shoulder.

When age is >50, your body reacts to this type of injury differently than when you're young. I have a small chance of reinjury, but I lost range of motion and strength big time - ruined my ski season completely and thanks to a warm winter that created super icy trails, my running got kiboshed big time too.

I'm back to running 3-4 times a week - 25-40km - a far cry from the 80-90km per week prior to being injured.

And of course the owner took off with her dog and left me lying there hurt. Welcome to life in the entitlement burb - fuck anyone but yourself.

After no real serious running since High School, I decided to start doing some running at the end of 2010. I was in horrible shape but stuck with it for a little while. Kept a log of my running until I got my first running watch in the spring of 2011. First run in December 2010 was 1.6 miles at a pace slower than 11 min/mile (with walking included). Upped it to 2 miles next time out but had to walk part of the run the first 3 times. Got in half decent shape through the year, ran a 5k in a race in less than 25 minutes in the fall of 2011, but took a break after that due to something I thought was plantar fasciitis.

After that the running was on an off for the next years until last summer when a good friend of mine got me to sign up for a local half marathon. With a a race suddenly on the schedule in November I got on a proper training program, but got somewhat hampered again by my heels. Kept it in check but training ended up being only once or twice a week for the last half of the training program, but I was improving a lot. Then I got a nasty cold 10 days before the race, and it was still there on race day. I decided that there was no way I would miss the race and took afrin and sudafed to open up my airways for the race. Stuck with my original race plan and it went like it had to, my body said stop after about 8 miles. Hobbled my way in at 1:55 and it took me more than a week to recover physically. Mentally I needed a break and didn't run for 3 weeks.

Meanwhile, back in September my buddy had gotten me to sign up for another race, a full marathon in April (in Paris). After 4-5 weeks of slow, shorter runs to get back into it I started a training program again, and realized I had 11 weeks of training to go. Got my heels under control after they were rediagnosed to bursitis, and my foot doc gave me some cheap custom insoles and I got a pair of Hoka Cliftons. Followed a somewhat controversial program called "Run less run faster", didn't miss a workout (3 per week), easily broke my half marathon record by 8 minutes in warm up races, and ran a successful marathon.

After a week off running and 2 weeks of easy runs, I'm back at it again. Training for a half last weekend of July, always get my 3 days a week in. Really like the routine of going out there, the purpose of the workouts, and ended up loving running in the evenings last winter when it was cool outside (just Bay Area so no real cold). Haven't raced anything short in a long time so I keep setting records (not counting high school) on anything from 400 to 5ks in my training runs, so I'd like to do a 5k sometime soon. I also expected a letdown after the marathon due to what seemed like pretty successful tapering, but once I got going again I felt like a champ, and I already feel like I can run significantly faster.

Long term goals, apart from just staying in shape (lost 15 lbs since I started training seriously last fall), is to break my high school 5k record (19:46) and getting under 1:30 on the half marathon. This seemed impossibly far away a year ago but now I'm convinced I can reach both.
You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig.

Way to get after it dood! I'd need wings to get a half marathon done in under 1:30.

I know what you are saying. Even with dedication I doubt I could run a 1:30 half. A lot of that is just age, at nearly 58 the body just won't do it. It might help if I quit stopping at the pub half way through some training runs.

Got a nasty head/chest cold that kept me from running for 2 weeks and then got all busy with kids stuff and missed another week. So yesterday was my first time out in 3 weeks. I sucked. It's amazing how quickly my fitness deteriorates with disuse. Still, it sure was nice to be out early on a cool and sunny spring morning with the flowers blooming and the birds chirping!
