Life/shredding was nicer before the interweb (and the jet trails)....and before JJ: He wasnt around around then. I think Koch and Farmer are pretty cool and are pioneers of something (originality). "Do it my way, thats my resume".

The article makes some great points actually about the hypocrisy and general poor-attitude of calling out an olympic athlete at the start of the games. He should've stopped while he was ahead though and skipped the corporate-political conspiracy rant.

The more I look at this guys blog and fb page I gotta say, I really like this guy. But I have always been one to appreciate those have have the balls to say what is really on their mind. I'm skeptical on the chem trail topic but he believes in it and isn't scared to tell you about it.

He brings up some good points, which lead me to do some research on what POW actually does with its money:

Looks like Chris Stienkamp, POWs Executive Director, gave himself a $38,000 pay raise between 2010 & 2011... now cleaning $75k+ annually out of your pockets.

They also spent $62,745 in 2011 to take a preview of a new film (Deeper) and reach new audiences in three markets: New York, Denver, and San Francisco...
so the basically used donated money to promote and market a TGR movie for Jones Snowboards under the banner of "helping" the environment

    Dont believe, look for yourself:

You think $75k is a lot of money to "clean"?

I don't (and won't) donate to them so they aren't cleaning my pocket; it's up to the donors if they think it's worth it.

Wow. POW is even more of a juggernaut than I expected. They're definitely going to change the world. They should just buy all the world's fossil fuels and launch them into space, then buy corresponding carbon credits to cancel out the impact of the launch. That would be even better than going vegan.

They spent 3.3% of total revenue on carbon credits in 2011.

The Vill feels more like Aspen these days. Lee Jays is long gone and in it's place last time I looked was a 30 dollar plate dinner restaurant. The Hostel is still hanging tough though.

I can't say anything bad about TGR or the Jones brothers. I don't know Todd and Steve very well but I have been around them both enough to say that they sure didn't ever seem to be the corporate greedy types in it for the money. This is not an ass kissing fan club comment, this is sincere. They were/are in it for the love and are genuine about their efforts. I have only met Jeremy on a few brief occasions and I only remember thinking that he seemed like one of the nicest and most unpretentious pro riders I have ever met. I can't imagine that he would be doing the POW thing to just cash in and exploit donators, I truly believe that he believes in what he is doing. Yes they are business owners but so what? I don't see a need to hate on people enjoying their success. I like Max's writing just because he isn't afraid to speak his mind and he makes you think, but I'm not saying I agree with everything he is saying.

After reading some of the posts I kinda felt obligated to add that.

all i know is i've enjoyed every minute I've spent in max's presence. he's a solid dude. he speaks his mind and has strong opinions. we've only kicked it in a few brief gatherings, but he's a good human being who means well. and in my opinion (the only opinion that matters ), he's fighting for the right side. if you're against that side then you should fuck off and stop skiing cause if you don't believe in climate change and aren't willing to speak your mind and fight to save winters than you don't deserve to ski.

that POW shit is horrible about as horrible as the wounded warrior project. I know its not all on jeremy jones, but fuck a foundation like that.

I don't know max very well and the chemtrails shit gets old, but he stands by his beliefs and I can't fault a man for that. (and secretly I sometimes believe him....) plus if he was completely full of shit, TGR, POW (plus countless others, outdoor mag) wouldn't ban him from commenting on their fb pages. he's got some valid points mixed in with the conspiracy theories, oh and dude shreds harder than most here

I think it is a good thing that Max has broken down the wall when it comes to ski industry group think. The industry is so insular, dissent is non existent, and there is no questioning of the status quo. Only a non stop mind numbing reel of all is rad in our world. When in reality, all is not good in ski towns or on this planet. POW is obviously fluff, they have taken on an abstract and politically correct cause so as to add a facade of meaningfulness to what it is they are doing. This is the era of claiming to do something beyond narcissism and consumption after all, blowing tons of CO2 into the climate every day is bad PR so bad business.

Meanwhile ski towns and ski culture is gone, the eastern side of their own state is being fracked to oblivion, economic inequality and housing crisis are just the way it is in ski town USA, critical wildlife habitat is sold to real estate developers, shady land swaps by ski resorts run rampant. None of these issues are even talked of by TGR, POW, or any of these so called ski ambasadors? Why? it would threaten their sponsorships as all aspects of ski industrial complex are integrated.

And Max, your writing is great but in 9th grade english class I learned to make 1 thesis statement and stick with it. The piece was great but devolved into too many pieces. Write to your audience, you lose all cred when you start down the road of chemtrails, I know you believe in it, write it up in its own piece. Climate change and what not are way over our pay grades and nobody really knows what the fuck is going on, baby steps for baby minds when writing for the general public.

I can't ever hate on anyone for getting paid to do what they are good at. If you can make a living doing something you enjoy and are good at, more power to you. I do say the guise of the POW foundation seems pretty sketchy knowing people pay to support something and it seems the majority goes to pay staff. But who the fuck am I talk... I would never donate to it anyway. I donate to cancer research and that's it.

In america you know you've finally made it when you can milk a good non-profit salary and use contributions to travel to cool places.

Now the place is Vail, it is completely over run by wealthy dropouts from the east coast, tracked out so fast. Is there a correlation? of course there is, some got rich, lived a carbon intensive lifestyle along the way and now are claiming to have found some green god. Why? a way to continue to fund their globetrotting ways while burrying their white man guilt for their sins against the earth. Jackson Hole has the highest number of non profits on the planet ya know, why is this? Because the wealthiest elitist multi generational 1 percenters suffer in a guilt ridden existence for the sins of themselves and their fathers, grandfathers and so on.
    huh? what?

    Mangy largest building...um, no.
    Walk on 50 trams...um, no.

Many of the homes being built in Jackson in the late 80's were being built by the .01 percent and were ridiculously ostentatious taj mahals.

Blaming the Jones bros is a joke. Take a look around the world...we're are progressing. Or regressing in many cases.
